Hi Floyd,
Eurekaprince is very happy to report that the new Eureka Airspeeds did really well in Consumer Reports testing. The only bagless vacs rating better in the list are the Dyson DC28 Animal, the LG Kompressor Total Care LuV400T and the Hoover Windtunnel T-Series Rewind Bagless UH70120 and UH70110. The AirSpeed A1000A is in position 5 and is listed as a Best Buy at $100, the AirSpeed AS1001A Gold is in position 6 and Target's AS 1002A is in position 7. All other bagless vacs are lower down in the rankings. All 3 models received identical test results (also identical to the test results for the Dyson DC28 Animal in position 4 which costs $600): a. Medium Pile Carpet Cleaning = very good b. Bare Floor Cleaning = excellent c. Air Flow through the hose for tool use = very good d. Noise Suppression = only good e. Emissions Control = excellent f. Handling (pushing, pulling, carrying) = only good g. Pet Hair Removal = very good For comparison, the top-rated Hoover UH70120 and UH70110 had excellent air flow though the hose for tool use and excellent removal of pet hair. The highly rated LG Kompressor Total Care LuV400T is the only bagless vac in a list of 40 bagless vacs tested that rated "excellent" for carpet cleaning! |

Ah yes the Eureka Airspeed. From working on Eurekas for years, it is not a vacuum I would recommend. They're built in a very similar manner to their Capture and Altima models, which although they cleaned well at first, had a lot of problems. Just like any throw-away plastic bagless vacuum from the last decade, the Airspeed has a pleated filter in the dirt cup that will quickly clog. The setup is very inefficient and high-maintenance. They actually try to hide this is in a very deceptive way by putting the filter inside of a plastic screen, which looks just like a shroud on a Dyson or other multi-cyclonic setup. They make the top of the dirt cup look like it has cyclones, but it doesn't. These are purely stylistic choices to fool the customer into thinking it has cyclones like the more expensive Dysons or other cyclonic vacs. Those filters clog and suction depletes fast. Also the very similar Capture model, and the Comfort-Oh! model had lots of problems with brushrolls melting, and plastic housings melting. They also leaked lots of dirt into the motors, which caused premature motor problems.
Now that Dyson's multi-cyclonic patents are up, bagless vacuums have the potential to become really excellent. Hoover was oh-so-close with the Windtunnel Max. Eureka got sued for copying Dyson's original dual-cylone setup with their WhirlWind models in the late 1990's. I would recommend waiting it out to see what Eureka rolls out in the next year or so.. Hopefully something that doesn't rely on junky leaky filters to separate dust from the airstream. Eureka has made excellent products in the past, and for a short period arguably made the very best vacuums, but those days are over. They've shamelessly cut corners and gutted their Sanitaire line, and their uprights are purely made with a pricepoint and profit in mind. Quality hasn't been the part of their strategy for years now. |
