In 1979, when Nintendo was thriving as a toy company, Gunpei Yokoi (their creative inventor that steered the company towards amusement products), designed a small remote controlled vacuum cleaner called the "Chiritorie" (Japanese for "dustpan"). When running, it constantly spins around in circles, but it has a single-button remote that makes the cute thing move in a straight line. There's a neat video that shows it in action. It looks fun!

How did you find this site? I'd never suspect vacuums to be on a Nintendo page.

I was being a huge nerd and looking for Nintendo's vintage toys from the 60's and 70's. I knew about the Chiritorie (also Chirotorii, if ya wanna romanize), but never saw such a well written article on one that detailed how it worked. I'd like one too!

They were ahead of the time with this idea, even as a toy. It took 40 years to realize it into what we have today with Roombas.
