Very interesting. I'm sure the 1.6 is the horsepower.

I've got one of those but it is gray. Unfortunately the wiring is all screwed up and it doesn't run, but it used to be really powerful when it did!

This little Kenmore was made by Sanyo in Japan. Very quiet and powerful....Bagless with a large dust "cassette." The hose was electrified so you could turn the vac on or off from the hose handle. Some Sanyo versions of this model gave you a tool box to hold all the attachments including the hose! The main vac itself was designed to sit right on top of the tool box to save space in the closet.

Was this the only model with the electrified hose? Because mine is just a basic plastic hose.

hey Chase...not sure....I never saw one without the electrified hose. Maybe this was a real budget version made for Sears. Take a look at the notch in the hose port and see if there is a pair of electric contact holes - that's where the electric plug embedded in the hose end would have connected to the electrical system.

On the other hand, if you have an on/off button right on the unit then this one never came with an electrified hose!!! :-)

Some time ago, I had a Sanyo Model 289H canister which looks about like this only different color, trim. It took the same cassette filter. It did not have an electric hose. Canister color beige; dark brown attachments.

Thanks for that post Gary. I guess Sanyo made some canisters with the electrified hose and others without.

Over the years, Sanyo's canister vacs have been proven to be great performers. Even the bagged Hoover Duros (made by Sanyo) has excellent airflow through the hose according to Consumer Reports.

In recent years, Sanyo has marketed a canister vacuum in Japan that actually redirects the exhaust air back into the hose and down the wands to create a blowing effect that is supposed to work with the suction to help remove dirt.

Sanyo is now owned by Panasonic, believe it or not. Click the link below to see the latest line up of Sanyo canisters being sold in Japan:

I've had the Sanyo I mentioned, plus a little Sharp (model number not recalled) that was similar. They were nice, well-made, smaller machines that were made for smaller-scale cleaning. Like apartments in Japan, f'rinstance. The Sanyo I used as a very portable shop vac. The dirt filter was somewhat elaborate and expensive to replace.

I've worked on a couple of Hoover Duros machines; they were both marked "Made in China" on the bottom. One was dated 2006, the other 2005, so made before the Matsushita majority acquisition of Sanyo 12-09. The Duros, while made by Sanyo in China, doesn't in my own opinion compare with the earlier Sanyo products made in Japan. Of course, the Duros has added trim decoration on it for appeal in the US market, like cladding on the wands, etc. Or maybe the cladding is to reinforce cheaply-made plastic, I don't know for sure. I've criticized Chinese-formula (if in fact they use a formula) plastic for some time. For example, the plastic on the older Sanyo was pretty high-impact stuff, very durable. The plastic on the Duros is not good. You can break the mouth of the hose nozzle by dropping it on a hard floor, a fairly likely scenario for a vacuum cleaner component.

Other problems with the Duros include the spiral electric hose body pulling free from the attaching hub on the canister end of the hose; bag flange holder breaks; most common of all, clip latch failure in wand sections and at power nozzle (the same part is used in three locations on this machine). It's all pretty simple stuff yet causes people to throw machines away (and buy a new one). Chinese engineers should know, for example, that a canister vac is towed around by its hose and that these connections should be made well to last.

I'm not sure why Hoover specified a different bag for the Duros. The SR bags aren't the easiest to find. You can modify a Hoover S bag to work by cutting off a bit of the bag flange.

Hoover Duros bag holder....

You know Gary, I distinctly remember that Consumer Reports rated the first Duros on the market as "unacceptable" because all the units they bought had faulty bag holders! The part must have been redesigned after Hoover got wind of the problem reported by CR, because the current models in the stores don't seem to have that problem, and they have received decent ratings by the magazine.

Hoover Duros-

I have got one, and I feel that it is a very sturdy, durable machine. But the things that make me absolutely hate it: the hose length, lousy attachments, attachment storage, the bag holder is all screwed up, and causes lots of dust leakage into the bag compartment, and I think the power nozzle is the absolute worst that I have ever used. Other than that, I love it. The suction is strong, it has the variable speed control, direct connect wands, the wands are metal and very nice looking, the ability to use the headlight on the power nozzle without the brushroll being on, and the colors of the machine are very nice! I'm not to sure if all of this is relavant to this thread, but since it was being mentioned, I figured that I'd give my input.
Chase

serious deviation

The thread has already gone haywire, thanks to me.

The Duros does have pretty good suction. On the two machines that I worked on, the wand sections were not metal, but plastic cladded in metal, perhaps aluminum. That little hatch on top that gives access to an area that stores only one attachment is a head-scratcher. I don't like the on-wand storage bracket for the other two accessories, but Hoover has used that rig on canisters before.

The Duros is still being sold and the price varies a great deal. I've no idea what the MSRP may be, but I'd hazard a guess that it's lower than something like the Electrolux Oxygen which is a comparable but a better machine.

The fact that they only stored the crevice tool onboard, and the "dusting brush" and upholstery tool are left to easily fall off the wand storage. If you are going to have attachments, it is wise, at least I'd think, to put them in the same place! Whenever I use it I always end up just taking the tools off, because they fall of so easily.
