I'd really like to get an A-Bag Hoover Convertible or Decade. But I don't want one shipped to me; I want to find it somewhere like a Goodwill. That would totally make my day. I also want to try a Singer/Kenmore twin fan. I even had a dream once that I found a bagless twin-fan at a thrift-store, which doesn't exist! That happens alot with my dreams, finding vacuums that don't exist. But anyway, finding any vintage Hoover or Eureka would be great.

Hey Josh, that striking machine is the Miele S5981 Continuum. Priced at about $1,200 too. I think its close to top of the line in the S5 series. |

Mine would be any Japnese vacuums like National Panasnic, Hitachi, Toshiba, etc. from the 60s-90s, they really catch my attention. |

Well...a few weeks ago I caved in and bought myself an Electrolux UltraSilencer Green canister vac to replace my floor-blowing TTI Hoover Constellation. And I am sooooo happy with this new vac! It is one of the quietest canisters I have ever used, very powerful and I just love the simple, unencumbered long hose handle! I also love the fact that it only draws 9 amps of power and is made from recycled materials.
It is a wonderful companion to my fantastic Hoover Tempo Upright. My only gripe is the colour! It is mostly black and because of this, it kind if disappears into the darkness of my closet like a phantom! But I'll get used to that. of space limitations. Several of the vacs in my permanent collection are vacs from childhood memories. These are machines that someone would have to pry from my cold dead fingers before I would willingly give them up. I do have a few that I never thought I would buy, but were in such great shape, and the price was right, that I couldn't resist. I live in a small one bedroom apartment with limited storage, so I am at a point that soon for more to come in, others would have to leave. I have room for a couple more, and once I find them, I will have to think really hard about what I would give up to bring in any more.
@John, Thanks man. I totally understand about shipping charges. I'm sure if I keep my eyes open, I'll eventually find the Constellation and convertible. It's going to be a while before I can add anything more to my collection however. I found out last week, I'm going to be going into the hospital for surgery, and will be there at least 5 days, plus down however long for recovery afterwards. So I won't be adding anything new for a while. |

Oh how I'm itching for a Vita-Vac or an Air-Way! I see them on the bay but they're always missing the hose and attachments. I'd like to use mine (although staring at one without using it is still tempting -- they're gorgeous!) |

Finally, I see a pic of the exact bag that was on my beloved childhood Eureka Automatic upright!!!! I have never seen it on the internet in all these years of surfing!!!!
The vac in your photo is sooooooooooooooo close, but not exactly the same model. The only difference (besides the obvious black replacement cord - the original one is a matching turquoise) is that ours did not have the 1957 Golden Anniversary treatment on the headlight frame and "hose-port nameplate." Ours must have been from a year or two later, because on our Eureka these features had chrome/silver colouring - not gold.... Thanks for this pic...would you allow me to right-click and download it to my computer? |

Hi Brian,
You can find that picture in my photo album, under Bud Mattingly's Photo's - PR-21. And yes you may download the picture to your computer. You should find a front and back side of that machine. Here is the Blue version you may be talking about. The back is in another message, didn't know how to get two pictures in one.

The bag on our Eureka was identical to the one on your Golden Anniversary 260 - with the little vertical rectangle graphic at the top. I think your 260 must be a greener tone, with the gold headlight frame. Whereas my childhood Eureka was definitely turquoise/aqua/light blue - like the bag you posted in this thread and like my profile pic - but every other detail is identical to your 260. Maybe ours came a year or two later.....
The black switch is definitely the same as ours as well! But we had a matching turquoise cord.... Anyhow - great to have a pic of your vac in my collection! Thanks again! :-) |

Hi,
Mine is the green color 260 for Eureka's Golden Aniversary. A friend of mines mother had a 260 with a blue bag exactly as I posted above with the screw base. Her's had a chrome hood and the square handle with the two speed black switch. Underneath they changed the bottom to have a rug plate instead of the screwed in metal trim. Easier to change the belt and brush roll that way. I think someone figured out that the model numbers always have a letter behind them. Each time they make a change, the letter gets bumped up. I don't remember what letter was after my friend's mom....Reading some of the posts, you are correct, they changed the 260 from time to time.
I had a problem with the motor in mine and had to go with a 1 speed 7 amp Sanitaire motor. The two speed motors were discontiued. Sanitaire just came back out with a two speed motor and I actually bought the vacuum to get the two speed motor. I will be taking it in and having the motors switched out of both machines to get the two speed switch to work the correct way again. Then I will use the 260 as one of my daily drivers. It actually cleans very well with the 7 amp motor in it now, but I want to get it back to as original as possible. I actually would have preferred the 3.5 amp two speed motor, but....no longer available. This new motor is a two speed 6.5 amp. I figure using it on low speed will be sort of like having a 3.5 setting.
I wouldn't mind finding a Model 2070 like Jeff Parkers. What a nice gift someone gave him. You can find his video on youtube. Beautiful machine, with two speed switch on the front of the handle and a cream colored bag.

Thanks for the additional information Bud! Yes, indeed, our blue 260 had a screwless stainless steel belt cover that was removed by flipping two clasps. Interestingly, the blue part of the vac that held the white one-piece square handle kind of wore out by the late 1960's, so the handle no longer clicked into "stored" position anymore. My parents sent the Eureka down to one of Montreal's biggest vac repair shops (Vacuum Rebuilders on St. Laurence Street) and it came back with an avocado green square handle holder! Whenever our Eureka was sent to Vacuum Rebuilders for a repair, they would often give us a loaner vac for the week - usually a scary-looking Premier Dupuis or something classic with a side-mounted bag!
It would be interesting to find out if the old three-row Eureka Disturbulator Brush Roll that came with the 260 cleans better than new Eureka brush rolls.... Neil - glad I am not the only one who drooled at the aroma coming from the Eureka 260 in the closet! The vac - especially the turquoise tools and hose - had a distinctive Eureka smell that is now engraved in my memory!!!! EPB :-) |
