Guardian Ultra

I tried one out in a vacuum store and i was not too impressed with it i feel my Silverado is a better machine, I think the guardian has just a little more airflow but i could be wrong i didn't have any way to measure it besides the old "hand test" as for suction power i'm pretty certain that the silverado has more. Trying out the latest and greatest is nice, but i wouldn't buy a new one if you really want one i would wait a few years until they are being traded and get a used one

Lux Guardian Ultra

KEEP YOUR RAINBOW!!!!

It's a better vacuum than the Lux. Lux is struggling to survive. Rainbow will be one of the two very last DTD brands standing, along with Kirby.

I vote for the Lux...

But too much money!!!Have you looked at a Sebo or Miele, Im very impressed with them, the only problem with the Lux is I hate those clunky wands.

Everyone has there own opinions on what the best vucuum and there is no use starting a argument about it becuase it would be worst than a religous war, but the reality is, Aerus is far from struggling and in decent finacial shape

Save your money and rebuild the older machines!!

The older lux's such as the silverado and Olympia have motors that are designed to be rebuilt, you can get the parts from hesco or essco and have a machine that runs like new that will out last any of these new plastic lux's.Learn to take vacuums apart and fix them yourself and you will have the best machines for very little money.
Your Rainbow is most likely still fixable if it is a D4 or newer you can also replace the bearings and brushes and restore your machine to like new performance for very little money if you do the work yourself.I have been in the vacuum bus.for 10 yrs.now rebuilding vacuums and selling parts, and I can tell you that vacuum cleaner sales people are trained to make your vacuum look bad over theirs.Take my advice and buy a good used Olympia rebuild the motor and replace the woven hose with a aftermarket vinyl hose, then service the power nozzle and fix up your rainbow, you will be a head of the game with two great vacuums and money in your pocket.

I was a Lux branch manager....

For the last four years they were in existence as an American vacuum cleaner manufacturer. At their peak, Electrolux had nearly 600 branches. A series of bad moves as well as the sale of the Electrolux name and the dumping of the corporately owned branches has reduced the number of branches nationwide to less the 150 according to the service manager/owner of the Aerus branch in Indianapolis, IN. He said that was being extremely generous as he was only absolutely certain of about 75 stores. Being "in good financial shape" and remaining so would mean, I would think, having an increasing number of offices and an increasing customer base. In Aerus/Lux's case they are a far cry from where they were at their peak.

I never said any vacuum was the BEST. I said that the Rainbow was a BETTER vacuum than the Electrolux. It is understood that any opinions expressed here are just that, opinions. The Aerus/Lux wands are problematic as are the P/N elbows. I have 2 Rainbow D4's that have provided incredible service for over 15 years, with almost no expense. I think it would be better to repair the Rainbow and keep it. Surely it could be done for less than $800.00

And just my two cents, with nary a bit of vacuum partisanship:

Never use a finance contract to buy any vacuum. If you can't pay cash for it, wait til you can. You'll probably see the price come down for cash, too.

I couldn't agree more with troopersam, if you can't pay for it in cash then you should wait until you can.  As much as I love vacuums, I think it would be a bad idea to go into debt for one.  Especially since you have several already, and many other good machines can be purchased for a fraction of the price.  There are a million other things you will be in debt for in life, school loans, cars, a mortgage, dont make a vacuum one of them.

As for the new Guardian, I would wait for a used one to pop up on eBay.  As much as I love Electrolux, from what I've heard, the Guardian Ultra retails for about $2,000.  While some others may think the price is worth it, I personally can't see paying that much money for a machine that has the same body that has been around for nearly 25 years and merely has a HEPA filter fitted into its top cover.  I love my Electrolux Renaissance and if the new Guardian Ultra was the same "R" style body, then maybe it would be worth it, but its the same body as a HiTech-2100.

Miele makes some wonderful canisters which clean and filter exceptionally well, especially when paired with the SEB236 power nozzle.  The cost of a TOL Miele with an SEB236 is about $1200, and you can usually negotiate the price with most vac shops.  I've owned 3 different Mieles canisters and I find them superior in many ways to Electrolux tanks.  They have tremendous suction, a sealed filtration system, HyClean bags, quiet operation, and a superior HEPA filter.  The latest SEBO D4 also looks like it might give the Miele a run for its money, as it has many similar features, a 28 foot cord, and its less expensive than the TOL Miele.  I have never used a Rainbow, but they certainly seem like interesting vacs.  And its seems like they are fairly reasonable to rebuild, along with having a very low operating cost, which may outweigh all the additional benefits of both the Miele and Electrolux, plus you already own the machine and it only requires a minimal investment.  Sorry to rant but when I purchase something, I like to consider all the different factors of each of my possible options.

Check with Dustin at Great Vacs dot com. He refurbishes high end vacuums and he does trade ins for Rainbows. He might have something you want. He has great reviews on Ebay. If I didn't already have a good vacuum, I would probably buy a rebuilt one from him.

Re Rainbow!

A Rainbow IS a well engeneered piece of equipment, I didnt mean to sound like I was cutting it down, it just takes a little more care to be as reliable , but I have three of them, that are as good as the day they were made, and the two oldest ones have never been worked on in any way, a 1958, and a 59 Model D and a 1971 chrome top model D...But when I sold them and did service work for them , it was unbelievable the condition some of them were in!!, I have literally had to drill/chisel off screws to get them apart, the biggest thing is DONT STORE IT ON THE WATER PAN...even if it is dry, the foam gasket holds moisture, and when put together after use, the moisture condenses on the metal parts, and corrosion results, I do believe, even though the price is rediculous, they will survive longer than the other door to door vacs, the Kirby and lux are both good, well made machines, but there sales orginization etc is nothing like it used to be, same for Filter Queen, this is why Airway is gone, at one time they were the BIGGEST door to door operation, the product was always great, the marketing..not! Rainbow is making THE MOST technologically advanced cleaner today, in my opinion, and there sales orginization is first rate!
