I was given a Hoover Windtunnel Self propelled as a gift last year and yesterday during use it started smelling horribly like electrical heat smoke and rotten fish. Yes it was made by TTI but it was a gift. What could be wrong and is it best to take it to a service center?

I've got two Kirby vacuums already. I doubt you would toss a gift your mother gave you either.

Sorry for those disrespectful posts in regard to your completely legitimate questions.

If your cleaner is within the warranty period, then I would recommend taking it in. It could be a switch gone bad, it could also be the motor. If it's not within the warranty period, perhaps call the company's warranty department and see what they can do for you. Sometimes a phone call is all it takes. I've heard good things about how TTI handles warranty issues.

The smell....

We see those in very regularly. Check and see where she purchased the machine. Some stores received batches of Hoovers that had more electrical smell than others. You aren't the first person who has mentioned the smell- we get customers in for belt issues who always ask about the odor.

I really think it has something to do with the "fresh from China" smell. You can really smell it when you get 10-15 machines in at a time and open them all up (the boxes reek).

I was wondering if others had pop up with the same issues. It worked well for six or seven months and used it as my daily driver but a few days ago the self propelled started not working on the pull back and the smell of a wet monkey. I first thought it was coming from the toilet since I was by the bathroom.

Is it bad wiring or bad design of the motor or made by wet Chinese monkeys?

Just bad odor- change the flat wide belt and your self propelled feature should work.

Well I checked the warranty and amazing it expired two months ago. I still called up a local repair guy that's been good to me in the past and told him the situation. He said right off that my description sounded like the motor needs replacing. Normally I'd chuck it to the dump to be a happy home for mice but it was a present from my dear sweet mom. If I do go through with with dumb hassell of a new motor- can I expect the same problem again or- does the replacement motor hold up well? If anything- I might just let it sit around as a piece of decor.
