My only problem with an Oreck is that they are too loud for me. -Jayson |

I'd rather have a Riccar Superlite. For a little bit more money you get better performance, and a more powerful motor and better cleaning. -Jayson |

Orecks are really not a bad vacuum. I have a 9200, though I did a major upgrade to it. The fan housing, the exhaust tube and bag adaptor, outer bag and bag docking system were from much newer 'donner' machines. But the motor is original and works great. I don't use it much any more, but it's nice to have around. The motors in the newer machines seem to ware out rather quickly(five years or so), but are not too expensive to replace. They are also easy to work on. I suggest replacing the belts often(3 to 4 months)and have a bag docking system added. I hope to get an XL21 or Platinum sometime this year. That's a very good design.

Would never even think of buying one of those things. Can't believe you people actually like them. Haven't you ever heard of a Riccar Superlite? Isn't that way better then an Oreck? I think so... -Jayson |

I have in fact used one and didn't like it. Thought it had weak suction compared to a Riccar Superlite. Orecks were never my favorite anyway. I do love my Kirby's though. Good machines indeed. -Jayson |

I had two Oreck uprights that I bought new about 6 or 7 years ago, one for my house, and one for my grandmothers. They were rather expensive but they did come with the 10 year warranty with free annual maintenance, plus the Oreck dealer is only about 5 minutes from my house. They were good machines, especially nice for quick clean ups, light weight and easy to use. The belts did need to be replaced often and the bags really held a good amount of dirt and filled quickly, which left me very surprised as I thought it would take a year to fill one bag. Orecks do groom the carpet very nicely and are good for easy clean ups on bare floors too. However I I decided to part with mine as they were loud and I needed something that deep cleaned better. At the time I still had my German Shepard and while it handled pet hair well, the dog tracked more dirt into the house than I would ever want to see again. Plus the "dog smell" from the machine got to me after a while, although that was not the fault of the vacuum itself. Overall I would give the Oreck another try, the XL21 and Pilot model have received good reviews and seem to be a great improvement over the older models.
The most important thing that one must remember when using or comparing an Oreck is: it is NOT a Kirby!! I have always loved Kirbys and cant imagine living without one, but to compare an Oreck to the Kirby as though it were a direct competitor is not possible. They are two very different machines, its like comparing a TOL Mercedes-Benz S-Class to a SmartCar. Two totally different vehicles that aim to please two very different audiences, just like Kirby and Oreck. |

I know not many of us would do this to one, but i have seen one person actually suck up gravel with and that thing died in a heart beat. Not made for stuff like that. Hey didn't Oreck make a knock off of the Sanitaire at one point? -Jayson |

I'm looking for one with a headlight. So it's like once you go with a Macintosh you won't go back to PC? -Jayson |

I like both. :) If you want a headlight, you will probably have to go with a Sanitaire. |

Ok so go with a Sanitaire I take it. But there are several variations. I've seen widepath, and ones that look like the old Eurekas. I'm confused someone help me here... -Jayson |

I like my Orecks as well, great for vacuuming carpets quickly and "relatively" well. They make the cleaning time profitable and much easier on your back if you have a large amount to do often.
I've had a fair number of them over the years, they aren't the most durable for really hard use - winter can be a very efficient "Oreck Killer" depending on the severity of the conditions but overall employees seem to like them well enough. I offered one to my mother recently who currently uses a Kirby G3 but she turned it down, "I like the Kirby." Being able to "drive" it in and out of the hall closet where it hibernates is a good feature, carrying it isn't an issue as they have vacs on both levels of their home. The one I'm using now is a 40th anniversary edition I found at a garage sale face down in the dewy grass one morning. "We don't know what's wrong but it won't pick up dirty any longer and although my mother paid a fortune for it, we just need to get rid of everything so if you're willing to take it, you can have it for free." Thanks! Pulled the piece of scrap-paper out of it and it's been fine ever since. I put a new (after-market) brush roll on it recently and am rotating it back in to service now that the winter sand, salt and grunge is pretty well finished. My son has an earlier version in his room that we were given by Roger in AZ four or so years ago. I pulled it out of the box when it came and he loved the color combinations (gray, black, white and silver-chrome) so I asked if he wanted it and it's been in there ever since. |

What sort of things can a Sanitaire pick up? I'm currious to know. Wonder what would break on of these things too. -Jayson |

a black Oreck XL something. It is a 2008 model, and its above middle of the line, but not top of the line. It is black with white writing sticked in the bag, and all it says is 'Oreck'. It is a two speed with LED lights and I absolutely love the vacuum. It is so easy to maneuver and use, and lightweight! I can vacuum all of my bathroom and kitchen rugs with it as well! And the fact that is doesn't scatter dirt around my hard floors is great! Unfortunately, I paid full price ($550) for it brand new at an Oreck Store, which is obviously WAY to much, but I really wanted an Oreck at the time.. But all in out, I really like them!

I have a thing for the oreck, Ive got 2 of them, one of the cheap target ones and then the XL. They do fluff the rugs nice, but not to good at deep cleaning. I use them moslty between heavy vacuuming. |
