Yesterday my grandpa and I went thrifting as we normally do. I hadn't found any vacuums yet, until I found this a thrift store we'd hadn't gone to. This store really surprised me. It's a Mormon thrift-store chain called Deseret Industries that seems to have locations in many states. The clothing area looks a department store. If you saw a picture of it you'd think it was a Dillards.

Anyway I found the vacuums and they had 4 high-quality vacuums. Two Kenmores, the Riccar and the original DirtDevil hand vac. One Kenmore was an early 2000s and the other was a basic 90s one that I was tempted to get.
I was very surprised to find the Riccar. Its the 8625.

So I plugged in the Riccar and the "Check Bag" light came and I knew it had a clog. It was $25 so we bought it. I normally buy good vacuums cheap and sell them on eBay and make some money, so that was plan for the Riccar. There was also a "Forever Bag" type bag there, so I got that for the Riccar for a dollar extra. I am very glad I did.

We were out very late, 7PM, so I put the vacuum out in the shed overnight. The morning I unclogged it and found it has ALOT of airflow. I was very impressed. The belt was also snapped, so I put on a used Eureka U bag on and it's worked perfectly.

So from there and vacuumed room by room of my grandparent's house dumping the reusable bag each time. There were huge amounts of dust that came out of that bag. I was quite surprised considering they have a Hoover Convertible.

I do not have a picture of it right now because it's at my grandparents' house as my grandpa was so impressed he decided to keep it! We are going to get some new brush-strips and bulb in the next few weeks.

The Riccar is everything the dealers and owner's say they are. This is comparable to a Sanitaire or a Kirby. It really vibrates the carpet and has a lot of airflow. I can only imagine what the Radiance is like.

I find a few nuggets at the local DI store myself. They tend to not put out crap, rather good machines that usually don't need much.

Selling ordinary user vacs on Ebay is going to get more expensive next month. They are going to start charging the final value fee on shipping in addition to the sale price of the merchandise. Of course that means that you are going to get soaked more money for items with a heavier shipping weight. So, if you are turning vacs on Ebay you might want to switch to Craigs List or similar, just figure out a price you've got to have and go from there. Unless it's a collector's item, so many vacs sell on Ebay for a single bid anyway. And the packing for shipping of a vac to a distant buyer is a real PITA to do it correctly. You have the benefit of living in a larger metropolitan area, so local sales via CL might work for you.

It has always bugged me that when you receive payment from Ebay sales via PayPal (same company), you have to give PayPal commish on the entire amount of money remitted, ie., both that part which is payment for the merchandise and the part that is going for shipping. What that means is you are in essence paying the commish for the post office because that's money they get for shipping and you don't get to keep. So now that they are going to do the same thing on the Ebay side, levy a fee on you (about 9%) for not just the item sale amount, but also the shipping, they are going to be charging this bogus fee twice. You are going to be paying the same unjust charge twice. Ridiculous.

I did not know that about eBay. Thankfully I'm slowly moving to Craigslist and having some luck with it too. It takes a lot of time to ship.

I can only imagine that eBay is trying to get even with sellers who offer low priced items and high priced shipping.

I got out of the eBay/Paypal crap years ago...just too much work for too little profit.

You were surprised that a Hoover wasn't picking up dirt? I wouldn't have been... :P

You have to modify the things to get them to be somewhat decent cleaners... :P
