That looks interesting. What's your take on that cleaner, Jack?

I assume it's an air-powered turbine-head?

It is me, or does the price seems awfully low...?

Post# 116011 , Reply# 3   11/26/2010 at 23:51 (4,871 days old) by DysonAnimal ()

Hi Fred - it's actually not too bad, and it's an electric powerhead, as opposed to an air-driven turbine. It's one of the few multi-cyclonic rivals for the Dyson DC23 Motorhead - you won't get the same quality, overall efficiency, or 5-year warranty, but the price is correspondingly much lower.

For anyone who's not averse to TTI, and doesn't have a grudge against plastic/multi-cyclonic technology, it's probably quite a good deal. Definitely worth getting hold of to play with!

How well does it perform Jack? Compared to its leading competitors? How good is the suction and deep cleaning ability?

Post# 116088 , Reply# 8   11/27/2010 at 16:03 (4,870 days old) by DysonAnimal ()

It's hard to give an accurate reply, because I can't tell from the photos exactly what modifications Hoover have made to their version. Doing something as simple as adding stiffer bristles, or slightly reducing the power, could have made a big impact on pick-up or separation efficiency. The Vax Mach Air vs. Hoover WindTunnel Air is a good example of this - my assessment of the Mach Air's performance doesn't really apply to the WindTunnel Air. I wouldn't call the Vax Mach 3 an aggressive cleaner, but it's a level above straight suction or air-driven turbos.

If someone from the forum does decide to buy one, I hope they'll share their photos/videos and opinions on here!

I'll stick one on my order next week. TTI has not done anything excessively exciting or successful with their other attempts to make a knock off Dyson. I do enjoy the Platinum Cyclonic Canister (S3865), but I think the power nozzle is what makes that machine.

yes it does, it leaves the old wind tunnel power nozzle in the dust.

royal uses it on their top of the line canister that looks just like the hoover anniversary canister

TTI strikes again

I have one.

I bought one of these Hoovers last month. It is my current daily driver. The hose does not swivel at either the machine end or the wand end. The suction is out of control and it really keeps going as the bin fills up. I love the power nozzle. The motor is situated in the center and the air channels are on either side. I have flat apartment style rug in my apartment so the nozzle just glides over it. The nozzle can be turned off for floor cleaning. The handle houses two tiny attachments, a crevice tool and a funny duster. 1 1/4" tools will fit on the hose or the wand. I would like to see a bleeder valve to reduce the suction when cleaning delicate things. It would be fun to see how it measures up in the convention cleaning competition! I bought mine at Target for $149.00

Yes Jack, there are so many self proclaimed experts on here- and they are the FIRST to tell you they are an expert.

Its a decent canister at a price point of $149- what in the world would you expect it to be made out of?

I think we should require a basic business and common sense course to qualify them as "experts."

Here is a neat point- if this product came out in 1952, the price would have been $18.29

Thanks for keeping your sense of humour and the intelligent rejoinders, Christopher. And Jack.

Why these tweenboys insist on pissing on our cornflakes I cannot fathom. (if any of these whining agitators were born before 1990 then it is a sad case of arrested development and all hope is lost for their future success at meaningful social interaction). They are an embarrassment to their peer group and a disheartening example to their elders.

Word of advice: When it becomes evident that one has dug oneself into a deep hole the first thing to do is stop digging. A simple sincere apology will get you a helping hand out. Get snarky and defensive with the foul language and we'll throw dirt on ya.

What's odd is this: Marty who has one says it doesn't have any suction control, not even a simple bleeder valve.

As everyone knows, bleeder valves (a simple solution to a problem) or electronic controls (a complex solution) have been available on vacuums for decades and decades and always touted as a selling feature, well almost always.

So why the heck wouldn't they put one on this?

TTI is simply capitalizing on our throw-away society. In fact, I can tell you with "expert" knowledge that when Wal Mart orders a number of vacuums from TTI, they bring the price point to their expectation.

For example:

Wal Mart intends to have a vacuum cleaner at the $99 price point

Wal Mart contacts TTI and asks how much it would cost to build a vacuum they can purchase for say, $67 and sell at the $99 price point.

TTI knows that it costs maybe $74 to build the entry level T Series

TTI then adjusts the vacuum to come to Wal Mart's wholesale cost. This could be removing a small metal part, using less screws, one less attachment, cheaper belt, etc.

The numbers in this post are entirely theoretical, I know how much I pay for an entry level T Series and the other TTI dealers on here also know, it would be unfair to reveal the actual costs.

and makes a great point on why not to buy a vacuum from Wal Mart or similar and buy from a place that specializes in vacuums instead.
Another obvious case of price adjusting and cutting materials is kitchen and bath faucets. Say you took a faucet from Home Depot, and one from a plumbing supply house, they are both identical faucets, and you inspected them and weighed them, the one from the plumbing supply house will be greatly heavier then the one at Home Depot.
Reason: they cut materials on the home Depot faucet to provide a cheaper price, while the plumbing supply place faucet is more expensive and better built. Another good example of "you get what you pay for".

lol

Reminds me of "The Brave Little Toaster". In a sequel, (I have not seen it for years), a character was explaining why he and the other appliances ran from the factory...."planned obsolescence". One other character defined this as "They were built to fall apart" and the picture showed a mad scientist-engineer loosening screws from a refrigerator door. You will have to watch the movie...do they even have it out anymore?

Anyway, my mother has gone through several Wal-Mart vacuums, the current one is a Eureka, which is VERY infamous for clogs-OF DUST AND HAIR! In the SAME PLACE! It is on a bend on the back, molded in clear plastic-GEE, I WONDER WHY? This tells me that they KNEW it clogs in that spot often. So much so, that it was molded in clear so you can see it. The one before this was either another Eureka or a Dirt Devil.

Reminds me of the bicycle industry. Schwinn, Murray, Roadmaster, Mongoose, all were once American brands. Built well, and iconic. Now, all are owned by Pacificcycle, a chinese company. The bikes are JUNK. They are like GM vehicles, all built the same, but available with 6 or 7 different badges. They then jack up the price a little bit over some stickers. Today's vacuums and bicycles are just some examples of how throw-away and wasteful society has become. Nobody gives a rat's rear-end anymore about keeping something going and getting your money's worth. They all want cheap stuff they can toss and complain about quality. PEOPLE WONDER WHY THE CHINESE HAVE OUR JOBS. PART OF THE BLAME IS ON THE COMPANY THE OTHER IS THE CONSUMER FOR SUPPORTING IT.

I better go lie down, I can write a book on this. I'm only 17, but I'm not stupid. This modern stuff gets tossed in the scrapyard crusher quite often.

Brave Little Toaster is still around. I'm pretty sure that movie was why I was so fascinated with (and scared of for the longest time) my grandma's Kirby. hehehe

And is this Eureka your referring to the Smartvac 4870? if so, I don't know how a person can clog that, let alone that vacuum gain a reputation for clogging.

gusher...

You sound about my age. Actually, that's why I prefer Kirbys. Sounds silly I know. Anyway, the Eureka that clogs is purple, had a suction-powered tool that clips to the handle. It is bagless and it's supposed to be really good with pet hair (never tried this feature). It works good when it's not clogged.

Oh, it also has a duster that sits inside a clear tube on the side, you pull a lever and the vacuum spins it and cleans the dust off.

many similar Eurekas. Just from finding them in the garbage to sell on Craigslist or getting them in for repair. When they are clean, the suction is great, and it really pulls itself, because, at least I know the Altima does, has a very decent brushroll. But they lose suction very fast

This is the vac I bought at the Sally Anne last summer for $12. It was complete except for the spin duster which I got new on eBay for about $10. Once I cleaned it out real well, and replaced all the filters, it is actually not a bad vacuum. Not my favorite, of course, but not bad.

Post# 117645 , Reply# 42   12/9/2010 at 16:13 (4,858 days old) by classicfan1 (Ohio, USA)

Yours looks like a different design. That or we and a couple others got a lemon. There IS however a good vacuum sold at stores wuch as Wal-Mart, Kmart, etc. and that is the Dirt Devil Ultra Swivel Glide. They don't make them anymore and I haven't seen them in stores for about 5 years at least. We've had ours for about 8-10 years now. It was survived my dad's temper, being dragged outside for use on cars, it has survived my bother, the thing won't die! My dad's is purple and came with a black Turbo Tool. My mom's was tan and it bit the dust a few years ago, but it was older I think. That one had a weird triangle-shaped attatchment that fit into the lid on the front.

Yeah you definitely don't have the Eureka I have, mine is the Smartvac 4870 BAGGED. It's the only modern plastic clean air Eureka that I really like, and they ARE impossible to clog, sucking up whole paper towels is nothing for it, airflow is immense too.
Brushroll performance is very similar to the Windtunnel models.

I've had enough bagless vacuums in the past that I never want to own or buy one again.

Justin,
Hoover, Royal, and Dirt Devil are all manufactured now by TTI Floor Care North America. Hence the similarity in machines. Hoover, Dirt Devil, and Royal are no longer made in the U.S.A. The company does maintain a customer service network here. Hope that answers your question, have a good day! Craig

Hoover, Royal and Dirt Devil (probably brands I missed there too) are all owned by TTI, a chinese company... (I'll let someone else elaborate on what that means) That's the latest thing that's happened, that was 2007 I believe.

TTI also owns Vax in Europe which is the name put on some of the American Hoovers being sold in Great Britain.

It may soon be hard to tell the "chicken" or "egg" with TTI vacs...which one came first!!!! Just like Sweden's Electrolux does, TTI mixes and matches names and models across the world now. The bagged Hoover WindTunnel canister we see in North America uses a canister unit sold as a Dirt Devil in Germany. The Hoover Platinum stick vac is a Vax in England. We are seeing Royal Procision vacs now sold as Dirt Devils in North America. So TTI vacs can be made of many different Hoover / Dirt Devil / Royal / Vax components now and labelled differently depending on the country they are being sold in.
