Good morning everyone,

What is the difference between the Ultimate G and the Diamond Edition besides the 2 speed switch?

Is $179 too much for a Diamond Edition? I currently have a G4 that I really like, but am thinking of upgrading.

Joe & UG vs. UG DE...

Hey Joe.

Depending on the age (serial number) in production, the gears were changed for the transmission/motor. This was done to help reduce, minimize or eliminate skipping or hopping on some of the carpets; especially if the carpet(s) are real 'grainy' in design.

The motor exhaust vent was modified to change the air path upward, thus reducing blowing of debris on bare floors.

The delicate/normal switch, (which you mentioned already), & this thus gives you four (4) speeds in conjuction with the regular safety switch. The amperage & wattage specifications did also change slightly.

Most of the rest of the changes were cosmetic &/or had already been incorporated into the late productions of the 'plain' Ultimate G model.

I hope this helps you Joe. (And yes, that is a pretty good deal, unless you hold-out & get lucky with a better deal. ~~lol~~) My opinion, you'd be hard pressed to find a better performing, quality built machine, 'presently' on the market.

Cheers & hagd all,

Bill

For all intents and purposes, the 2-speed switch is the only difference. Well, that and the diamond pattern on the bag. I know people who have the 2-speed machine love that switch. When I first got my Ultimate G (non-Diamond) about 2 years ago, I compared it with one of my Generation 3's and noticed no difference whatsoever. I now have a Sentria and find the same to be true. If you do want to upgrade, I'd say wait for the new Kirby Avalier.

Here is a link to an old thread, (it was in the vintage section), where I posted the specs for the DE. I just found it.

If you don't want to wait for the upcoming new model Kirby to be at an acceptable price, I say take the Kirby Diamond at the price you mentioned. It is my favorite vac ever. I do know some Diamond owners that say they have never once used the gentle switch, but I use it all the time.

Well, I took the plunge

and bought the Diamond Edition. I think I'm gonna like it. My ex-neighbor has one and she absolutely loves it. Now, If Samantha could just do a little twitching and get it here by Friday (I know, dream on!) I could use it in the vacuum off. Here's a link to the new (to me) Kirby.
