There was just a 5-minute (or so) segment about vacuum cleaners on Good Morning America. I wish I had known it was coming up; I would have taped it.

It started out with some very cool vintage footage including a great color commercial for the Lewyt, and then some other old footage of ladies vacuuming. There was a brief glimpse of a metal upholstery nozzle attached to a blue and gray woven hose. It was really quick - too fast to tell what it was but I guess it was probably the Lewyt again.

One of the show's hosts (don't know the names as I don't usually watch this show -- am not generally up this early since I am such a night owl) talked about how much different "modern vacuums" are.

Then they went to a lady ("regular housewife" type) who claims to be notorious for abusing vacuums. She said she has had six vacuums in two years. She was talking about how she wished there was a more durable vacuum that could stand up to her very demanding household. (Gee Fred, maybe someone should send her an Electrolux G!!)

The the host and the lady went "head to head" in a competition with two bagless machines, the Dyson Animal and the Hoover Wind Tunnel. The two machines compared pretty much equally in terms of performance (and both made a frightful racket), but the host noted that the Dyson costs about a hundred bucks more. Also, the Dyson got choked up when trying to sweep up Kix cereal and the lady had to stop the machine [whereas the Hoover did not]. You could hear all sorts of awful grinding and chewing sounds!

It was a very interesting segment. Hope someone out there taped it so they can post it here!

Wow...those machines do make quite a racket. I am not sure what happened to the dyson...YIKES! I guess it is better to pick it up than suck it up. Most vacs will last as long as they are used correctly and treated decently. That cheap cleaner at the end ($40) won't last long in the hands of that lady! I doubt if a Hoover Commercial 918 would last long in that house. She is definitely a vacuum abuser! What a great clip. Thanks.

New Windtunel

Thanks for sharing that clip! That women sounds like she and her kids are a vacuum cleaners worst nightmare!

Does anyone have any experience with the new Windtunnel 2? I had the bagged self-propelled Windtunnel turbo modela while back and I returned it because it was sooo loud and difficult to manuever! Im wondering if Hoover has improved the manuverability when they created the new W2? Does it still sound like a plane in going through your house when its on?

Sounds like in the first part of that film clip when they were vacuuming up the "Kix"the Dyson's roller brush clutch was sounding-when you hear that you should shut down the vac and clear the brush roll.Running the Dyson with the clutch "ratcheting" is a good way of burning up the clutch-belt unit.To replace-about 60bucks.The standard belt-of course about 2-4 bucks.

Charles~Richard,

I have a Mac and I was able to view it without a problem. Have you installed the Flip4Mac Windows Media Components for QuickTime? It allows you to view Windows Media files In QuickTime and is available free from MS at the link below.

Thanks for the tip

I already have Windows Media Player installed on my Mac and, so far, it has worked for all MS-format multimedia. I am sufficiently suspicious of PCs with all their viruses, worms, spyware, etc., that I am leery about putting a lot of PC stuff on here. I do have the MSOffice Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) but rarely use it; it's only there because I need it for one of my clients. And I have Internet Explorer which, again, I rarely use - only to test-drive web pages to make sure nothing funny goes on. And that's about it.

Fr. Bruce sent me a link via email; I am going to see if it runs there. If not, I'll just view it on my rarely-used PC!

Flip4Mac...

...was designed so you don't have to install and use Microsoft's crummy Windows Media Player. With the Flip4Mac Windows Media Components Windows Media files (.wmv and .wma) play in QuickTime -- far better than they ever did in the Windows Media Player for Mac.

Filp4Mac is NOT a Microsoft product. It is a third party supplier. As soon as I installed the free Flip4Mac Windows Media Components for QuickTime I trashed Microsoft Media Player 9.0 for Mac, which is outdated anyway.

Microsoft has announced that they no longer plan to provide future updates or support of their Media Player for the Mac platform. That's why you are experiencing problems.

Gotcha-thanks

I'll go ahead and get it then!
