This is my recent Ebay find. For $83 plus shipping I think it was a pretty good deal. It even came with a brand new brush roll and the shampooer that looks like it was used maybe once! I was really surprised at how good it looks too. The previous owner maintained it well. With just a little polishing, new wheels and a new bumper, it should look pretty good. I think it must be an early G6. The serial number shows that it was manufactured in October 1999. So I'm guessing the handle is a late addition. Although, I haven't opened it yet to check the serial number on the motor. I'll do that when I get ready to polish everything. I'm laundering the bag and plan to wash the mini-emptor and fill tube tonight.

Well, I disassembled the G6 and polished the visible outer parts. I also laundered the bag, mini-emptor, fill tube, bag adapter, scruff plate, bag top, and trim strips. The bag only had one small nick on the rubber gasket, so it is in very good shape. The fan has a couple of nicks in it but nothing bad. I think that will be my next big project -- learning how to replace a Kirby fan! I think this must be a rebuild because the serial number on the motor shell indicates that it was built in October 1999; however, the serial number on the motor shows that it was built in January 2002. So I'm guessing the handle is original. I've ordered new wheels and a new bumper. Once it's all put back together, it should look almost new!!! Oh yeah, I also noticed that the transmission has a different design than the one in the G3.

This G6 was already in very good shape, so it polished and cleaned up REALLY well. I'm waiting on wheels, a bumper, an F Style bag adapter, and a new fan (which I'll tackle this weekend). I've never done it before, but I'm pretty confident I can handle it. Right now, I'm waiting for the fill tube to completely dry before I re-assemble the bag system. I was quite surprised by the amount of dirt that accumulates in the mini-emptor and fill tube. It took some soaking in detergent to get it all loose. And you're absolutely right about the new brush roll. It is the BEAST. I don't know why Kirby didn't develop it sooner. I'll definitely be getting one of those.

For some reason, I've decided to collect each vacuum in the G series. I now own a G3, G4, G5, G6, and Diamond G. All I need is the Ultimate G. And I guess the Sentria is technically a part of the G series, so I'll eventually get one of those too. This G6 is probably the one I'll use daily. The nicest one I have is my G5. I'm guess I'm not much of purest, though, because I've upgraded the G3, G4, and G5 vacuums with the newer style mini-emptor.

I installed all new wheels, a new bumper, outer bag, and F-Type bag adapter today. I hadn't intended to install a new outer bag but decided to do so since most everything else is new. Apparently, all new outer bags manufactured by Kirby are the same material as the current Sentria bag. The material is not as thick and it seems to be a different kind of fabric too. I also noticed a problem and I don't know if I created it when changing the wheels. But the height adjuster is too sensitive going down. One tap will make it advance two or three notches. I took it off and reassembled it and that didn't seem to help. Anyone have any ideas? |
