I am wondering if the 1960s watermatic I just aquired has something rong with it. It has good suction but the motor and the metal around the motor heats up quickly is that just from the exhaust air rushing through the exhaust area or something more serious?
thanks for your time -scott

Sounds like ...

I've found that when a vacuum motor overheats, and it's not because of a plugged filter, then it is usually because the field coil is bad. I had a Kirby Sani VII and an Electrolux Olympia that used to get so hot you couldn't touch them and both of them had bad fields.

I seriously doubt there is anything wrong with it, most of the vacuums designed like that heat up quite a bit. The reason Filter Queens have that ugly plastic grille on top of them is because they normally got so hot that you really couldn't touch them.
