See if you remember this John. The date was September 15, 82. On the morning of September 14, as we were getting ready to tour the Hoover factory, you turned on the tv and we heard the breaking news that Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco had just died. The day before, she had suffered a stroke while driving. So we did the factory tour then listened to updatesd broadcasts about Princess Grace. For me, that day is forever etched in my mind. The next day as we were about to drive to New York, Stacy Krammes gave us the list of names and we talked about forming the club. You were not wild about the idea but said to me "I doubt if it will work, but go for it"! That was 27 years ago, and look at us now. As I said, if you had not taken that cross country drive there would be no club. Thanks for helping get us started. Alex Taber |

remember any of that! I had no idea that we were on that trip when Princess Grace died. Amazing! I DO remember that we went and visited the graves of some of the Hoover family, that we went to the County library and did some research about the Hoovers, and found out the "family secret" that one of the Hoover sons had committed suicide.... Anyway....glad you decided it WAS a good idea. |

The other day I saw a movie with Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby and after I did a Yahoo search of the cast and crew. I remembered that Princess Grace had died the same day we went on the factory tour. Yes I do remember all the drama of Hoover and how the family hushed it up. As I recall Frank G. Hoover's book 'Fabulous Dustpan' was pulled by the Hoover top brass as it said things that the family didn't want to make public. I also remember the man that you spoke with. He was Bill Smiley. His wife was so pleased that we were there to talk shop. I remember that she told us nobody gave a damn about him any more. That was a fun trip and I'm so glad that we got in touch with Craig Long, Mike Pupek and others. You said in an earlier post how we educated people, well you taught me the history of Hoover. To think that we are about to have the 25Th convention. Thanks for helping start all this. Alex Taber |
