Of course, no one except psychics knows how much, how little, how many bidders or none at all are watching an item. Sure, early bidding does demonstrate interest and yet those bids can stall with no further activity days in advance - that's when you know you definitely have eager competition. Then, in some cases the early bids climb so fast you just know you've been bid out of the ballpark, even if there are 5 days to go. So it becomes harmless fun to watch. The there's the case where you just 'know' instinctively that the lurkers and snipers are biding their time and no one is bidding early. "How can everyone you know not be your competition?", you convince yourself. This is where you wait patiently, put your hopes and dreams on the 'I don't really care' shelf, toss in your bid at the last moment, cross your fingers and hope for the best outcome. Either you win or...it turns out that 'everyone you know' - except you - was thinking the same thing, decided against even trying and backed off without even trying. That is how I ended up with this lovely Electrolux 5oth Anniversary Gold Plate last week. No one else bid on it. Remember this plate? It has been listed frequently over the past year. Beginning at $250, each time it did not sell the price dropped another $50 increment. $200, $150, $100, $75...at Buy-It-Now for $50 still no one was biting. I was biting my nails up to the final second expecting it to be snapped up at $50 and then! Bingo! Is there a point? Only that if you don't play you can't possibly win, or lose. It's always worth a shot but that's only possible if you are fortunate enough to have your fingers on the keyboard at the appointed hour. This went off at 8:25 AM, I had made my Tim Horton's coffee run the night before and was only 3 minutes late for work...and since I'm the Boss of me... :-) Win some, lose some.
