Rob Gwisdala

here is my early 90's kenmore canister machine that I restored after being totally neglected by the last owners. this machine was found with 2 inches of water in the canister itself and a nasty rotting bag. I was surprised that it still works. after being serviced and put back into use this machine has been used in my home for the past 5-6 yrs.

Enjoy

Well, knock me down with a feather! That looks exactly like one my folks had years ago, but I'm sure the power nozzle was different, and it had a gray hose. I don't really remember much about its performance, etc, but I do remember the power nozzle belt always wearing out, for whatever reason, and the tab lock on the hose cracking off (not saying its a bad machine, of course).

Thanks for putting this up. It's a treat to see an old family vacuum again.

this machine had a grey hose however it ripped into several peices so I found one to a kenmore whispertone at the local Dump that I liked because of the handle and I broke off the middle prong so now it is used for this machine, as for the powerhead it has a geared belt. the machine is very powerful and performs very well. I think I will post a vid of it once I redo the bearings in it.

Wow, it looks to be in great shape for its age and all the use/abuse it has been through... you know they still use those same attachments!

Must be a base model... no door over tools, no headlight, no quick release power nozzle... Does it have the switches in the hand grip? I can't tell of the button on the base is for the power or the cord rewind!

The 360 degree swivel hose and integrated wires are a GREAT thing! I wish my Miele had that.... I'm always fighting the wire as the hose turns.

the original hose does not have a switch in the handle as the button on the machine is for the power. the new hose was for a newer whispertone and has the switch in it but is not used for that purpose hence the middle prong was broken off. other than that I went through the machine in and out cleaning it up and restoring it. I did this about 5-6 yrs ago and used it once in a while.

Very nice Mike. I love those Kenmore's =). I have had several and sence given or sold tham. I had a green Panisonic version that I got for a hundred bucks when one of my fav stores was going out of business. I used it for about 2 years and then I pulled the motor out for my older Kenmore in case that one bites it.
Nice work BTW!

Thank you Mike! That Kenmore cleaned up very nicely!

I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure the model my folks had had a power nozzle with a flat belt. I can remember more than a few times when my father would use it, it would emit the burning rubber smell and the power nozzle would stop. That being said, I do remember it being a good and reliable performer. Maybe the belt was something Kenmore changed around that time, or, it could be that the power nozzle on my folks' machine was a lower tier model. I'll leave that to the Kenmore experts.

I use to have those same models....

I had one in blue and one in white like the one in the picture. The white on I found in the trash and the blue one I got from kirby.

Problem with all those era Kenmores wasn't the vac but the hoses. I don't think I've come across one yet where the hose wasn't badly split. They must have used a very bad plastic

yea pete I think you might be right, the hose that I used to have had a massive crack by the handle and even taping it didnt work, so when I found the new hose I jumped for joy as I love to use this machine.

Bob
your parents machine might have been a newer model or as you said a lower end model

Hoses

Yes that era Kenmores had a kind of hard plastic that would kind of dry out over time and become brittle. Especially in hi humidity climates they would actually dry rot. Other than that I love tose Kenmores and the ones prior(the squares).
