Question: How does the switch activate, and where is it mounted on the machine? Also, what is the model number of the Convertible you have?

Just my two cents...I would not run the Convertible on high speed to vacuum...this puts a lot of strain on the motor. It can be done easily especially if it is an older model. I have known guys that have done just that and the motors litterally flew apart on them. What are you trying to vacuum?

Kirby Dual Sanatronic 50-Sentria uses a 2 speed motor with automatic shift just like the Hoover Convertibles. High gear is used for hose, Low gear is used for floor.
Kirby Diamond Edition has the automatic shift motor too but it has a manual 2 speed Normal/Delicate switch.

the model is 593.it's mounted right below the right rear wheel.the one with the spring on it so you can adjust the height on it.
