That Hoover Convertible switch always did it for me. As far back as I remember, that white flip switch has always fascinated me.. the feel of that "click" that only those switches feel like. |

only seen it on youtube, but the speed knob on a bison upright that brings it from a gentle purr on low up to a jet airplane roar on full power. the step on switch on the lux XXX is classic, the perfect switch. |

I like the Electrolux rocker switches, especially when they're parallel to the body of the vacuum. |

My very favorite. Cleverly disguised as part of the futuristic handle on the Westinghouse T-6. |

This is my second favorite. Universal VC6702. Another switch hidden in industrial art. |

The aforementioned Modern Hygiene gray ribbed rubber capped aluminum plate pushbutton paddle...and the Great Fake-out of 1949 Cylinder Vacuums, the Modern Hygiene's length-enhancing hollow end caps. So boastfully excessive in Brooks Stevens' wishful thinking the engineers had to add a long tube extension to reach the bag. Nonetheless, a stunning design icon. |

And surely, Shirley, we can not leave out the GE Roll-Easy's take on the common toggle, their spring-loaded pull-chain 'wheeblewobblebob', to protect milady's shoes from gouges and dents. Sadly, oft times the chain toggle got broken off from too much force and is replaced with a standard rigid toggleswitch. |

My favorite switch is the red one on the Elite-style on the side of the machine. I think I like it mosty because my parents had Soft 'n Light when I was a baby, and I used it ALOT! Plus it also has a short (CLIK) noise before the motor turns on. Plus the soft-cover bag is right next to it! I'm going to some Goodwills tomorrow with my grandpa and I'm on the lookout for a Elite. I really miss the soft-cover bag. My Oreck just doesn't fill that spot anymore. My 2ed favorite is the old Convertible switch, where it makes the really loud click and then slowly turns on. Then I also love the Eureka's/Sanitaire's switch on the base. It just feels like the right spot and size. |

I like the handle switches, typical of Hoover convertibles and pre-war Hoover uprights. They're very handy, especially in tight spots when you want finger-tip control and I like the positive feel that you get in your hand. However, there is a down side and that is when it comes to repairing them. I recall not long ago taking a similar switch apart on a Hoover 370 Junior. It required patience driving out the small rivets without cracking the bakelite/plastic and balancing the little square plate on the end of the plunger/spring on re-assembly. The fault was merely corrosion of the curved metal contacts, both stationary and moving, due no doubt to long storage. I've also had an air-way switch apart, similar to the one illustrated, since I needed to rewire the machine. I was a little careless and some bits flew out so patience was required to ensure correct re-assembly. Stephen |

The 2-speed switch was first used on Model 750, but I do have a 725 which has a single-speed arrow-ended switch. Here's the arrow-ended 2-speed switch on my 800. |
