It's just that the beauty part of the new eBay is anonymity. By advertising it here you are giving the seller free advertising, hence doing them a favor (insuring that they will get more money for the item) and starting a bidding war on eBay between fellow club members. If there is no vested interest in it for you, then why do it? I don't understand. Let everyone see the item on eBay for themselves. Like captain E.J. Smith of the Titanic once said "Women and children first, and every man for himself...."

The deepest pockets with the fastest fingers always wins no matter what the circumstances or pre-knowledge. Since most of us trawl EBay on a daily basis it is doubtful any interested Club & Forum members would miss flagging & watching such a desirable item, if only out of curiosity of the outcome. I nabitually watch items for the pure research of what goes for what on a given day. Sometimes it's an item I want and will bid on. Stamping one's foot and holding breath until turning blue will change none of this but can cause one's disposition to sour if dwelled upon. I know this particular Model T is too far away and too expensive to ship to my part of the world.

Ditto on the research......

It's always surprising to see what people want and what they'll pay. I'm always reminding myself that eBay is more about availability of a specific item, and less about finding a bargain. If one happens to find a bargain anyway, then that's just gravy on top.

Personally, I keep my listings separate from the forum. I just don't feel these two worlds need to collide unless it happens by accident.

Post# 87214 , Reply# 8   12/26/2009 at 20:51 (5,227 days old) by electroluxxxx (……)

eh I just listed it because it was intresting and I thought that other fellow members might enjoy it.

Post# 87215 , Reply# 9   12/26/2009 at 20:54 (5,227 days old) by electroluxxxx (……)

and that is the beauty of ebay, if there was a bidding war on the item the users account is concealed so no one would know who is bidding on the item.

I had always looked at the posting of an EBay listing...

either by a member or otherwise -here on the forum- as a service to other members. Few people take the time to go through our profiles to see what our "dream machines" are. That is what I thought one of the functions of the forum was to help each other obtain our dream machines. As posted above, I too have watched an item just to see how it does. So too, I've seen a listing posted here, considered bidding, and have bid on listings. I also have a limit as to what I will spend. I don't get bummed out if I get outbid. I've also been clued in by private E-mail about EBay listings I have missed and have gotten some of my dream machines as a result. I've also seen what has happened to people here on the forum that have posted their EBay listings here. I've written to people I have never met, talked to, or E-mailed before to apologise for what I consider wrongful treatment here on the forum. I felt sorry for them I guess. I wanted them to know that not everyone felt the way one or two people did.

Then came the purchase of the now infamous NC57. It was posted here only four hours before the end of the listing. I had been watching it for days. Terry's and my main concern for these machines was that they not be lost forever. There were (and are still) some pretty rare birds in the lot. It was never our intention to "make a fortune". We had some early inquiries before anything was listed, and that kind of got us thinking that perhaps we might just do alright with this deal. More on that later.

Terry and I struggled for a long, long, time as to how to handle the situation. How do we let folks know that we obtained all these machines, some of which may be "dream machines", and NOT offend even one person when we list them? We decided that just announcing that listings would be begin on such a such day, no real specifics...blah, blah, blah - would do the trick. It worked. neither of us received via the forum or E-mail any communication complaining about the way we did it.

We also didn't sell a whole lot either!!! So little in fact that having to do it all over again after the holidays is something we have to do...but are sure not looking forward to it. EBay is one huge hassle! And the truth of the matter - only about one third of the stuff that DID sell went to collectors!!! Most of the stuff went to people that are going to USE the stuff. Daily drivers. Vintage, restorable, or rare vacuum cleaners being put to use by people because they are tired of $39.00 plastic from Wal-Mart etc. No collectors.

How disappointing! Two trips in one week to North Carolina, the BIG costs of transporting, the listing costs, shipping supplies, postage/shipping charges not being correct, (even after trying to figure in handling)....then not to mention the work of it all, sorting, cleaning, storing, taking pictures, writing listings, answering E-mails, etc., etc., all so that some lady who's Mother used to have a machine "just like that" can clean her kitty's litter box with a good 'ole -they don't make 'em like that anymore- vacuum cleaner.

I wasn't done.....hit post by accident!

I'm not telling all this for anyone to feel sorry for us. We knew what we were getting into. The main point of this is - in our case - the majority of the machines DIDN'T EVEN GO TO COLLECTORS!!!

The second point of this epic novel is to let everyone know that when the last big push to get rid of the bulk of the NC57 items comes, it will be posted right here on this forum. They will be listed on EBay, but we want as many people to know about the stuff as possible. We have talked about it over and over again. We would like the remaining machines to go to collectors. But we do want the stuff gone too. So much so in fact I will probably step on one or two sets of toes to do it.

Sorry about the length of this thing. I didn't mean for you all to suffer because I can't sleep!

Sincerely,

Rick

I think that yours and Terry's idea is a good one. I certainly wouldn't think it offensive to see the remaining machines listed here to test the waters for interested parties. I think many members would be happy to get the opportunity to look them over and have the chance to buy one or more. I agree...it is sad that so few collectors purchased some of that lot. Maybe now they will. Best of luck to you. JL

Hey Mike:

Thanks for posting it. Personally I like these postings as I dont have time to sit on the computer for hours a day looking at ebay. I would never have seen some of the auctions if not for them being posted here and I would rather see them go to collectors than someone that just wants an "old vacuum" to trash.

The ironic thing is.......

Only ONE BID was made for the Electrolux "T"....so it seems to me that Ohio Tuec's complaint does not really apply in this case anyway......but I agree with Collector2....If I can not have the nice ones on Ebay I'd rather see them go to a collector than to someone who deos not appreciate them.....PAT COFFEY

I don't think Ohio's complaint was substantive at its base anyway.

Okay, fine, when the elusive Hoover "O" that you've been pining for your whole life appears on eBay, and you hope that nobody else sees it, I'll be sure to advertise it here in BIG, BOLD LETTERING so that everybody and his brother tries to screw you out of it! Why does nobody seem to get where I'm coming from? Advertising an item (that's not yours) ruins the thrill of the chase for other interested parties. That's not what this forum is about....

Add to my last....

Offering your own vacuums here (with or without photos) so that other member have first crack at purchasing them = nice. Bringing to other club member's attentions a vintage vacuum for sale on eBay so more sharks can chum at the water and fight over it = not so nice....

Karl I only added the post because I thought that other people like you and myself might find it interesting, I did not take offense to what you said and I really hope that I did not offend you by posting this. if so I apologize, however other people enjoy it therefore you should as well. this was not meant for advertising as I added it 2 hrs before it ended. so not to be rude but if it is a problem let me know in email form that way it does not start an argument between me, you and other members.
I really enjoy this site and have for the past 3 yrs and I will not stop posting because one person does not like it.

I have a personal policy against bidding against a friend (or fellow club member) if I know about his/her bid. The last time this was discussed, I was left with the understanding that everyone else who posted followed the same ethic. On the other hand, the most despised collector known, Mike Pupek (ebay: "power..."), is so globally disliked precisely because he snipes his confreres.

So, the man with the deepest pockets wins and Mr Pupek clearly has a really big...um...pocket. I know I've lost a few to his engorged avarice orifice.

Ebay was a fun, fair & transparent crapshoot back in the days when bidders and winners were known through their screen names but this new anonymity has not changed the basics - if ya want it, bid on it. If ya lose, sigh and move on. No amount of 'pre-publicity' or the lack of is gonna change the outcome...and that's why constant thrifting and trading among friends will always be the favoured bargain way to amass & grow a collection.

Any Ebay vacuum that has been posted as a heads-up alert here in the Forums I find 99.9% of the time I'm already watching...

Dave

Choosing what to do with the information.

sleepdoc's profile picture
I completely agree that wealthiest person who wants something gets it. That's immutable. But even such a person can choose to respect a confrere who arrived first. That is a function of my ethic that I would prefer to show kindness to a fellow collector than to own a particular item. Most of the vacuums I've bid on on ebay were purchased to be given away to other collectors as gifts. Consequently, my reputation among those who know me is one of generosity, whereas Pupek never even seems to surface at all unless he's sniping something from a club member, a fact that obviously isn't lost upon people and has caused him to become the pariah that he did over the years and many identical incidents. No vacuum in my basement is worth that to me.

Post# 88479 , Reply# 24   1/8/2010 at 11:06 (5,215 days old) by ohio_tuec ()

Whether Mr. Pupek has the deepest pockets or not is irrelevant. I still hold a grudge against Mr. R.J. Vanik for "sniping" me on a Kenmore Imperial 10 years ago. I eventually wound up paying ALOT more to get one, and the one he got had the original bag. All you can do is sigh and move on. Advertising it here (whether intended as a friendly gesture or not) guarantees (if you are the high bidder) you will pay more for the item than had it not been mentioned here. Yes, there always be us vac collectors who scour eBay and will always be aware of when these auctions come up, but by listing it here, people who may have been unaware will now be competing against you as well. Somehow, it cheapens the thrill of the chase and ultimately, the only one who benefits from you doing that is the seller. I guess I can stand on my head and spit wooden nickels, this practice will not stop on this forum. But it shouldn't be encouraged.

My entire point is that if something is posted with the statement that a club member wants it and bid on it, that knowledge would PREVENT me from bidding on the same thing, even if I wanted it.

Post# 88481 , Reply# 26   1/8/2010 at 11:28 (5,214 days old) by ohio_tuec ()

But with eBay's new policy of anonymity, how would you know?

I would know by someone posting a thread on here that an item is up and that person or a subsequent person saying s/he is bidding on it. With ebay's anonymity, that's the only way to know. That's why I pay attention to it here.
