A Hoover Tease!

Checkrate/Likes I'm working on a new Hoover feature for my web site. All this talk about the pre-150s has gotten my interest in them piqued again. This will not be a huge addition since it will only highlight two models, but I think y'all will enjoy it. See the two photos below for a little tease! :)

Checkrate/Likes 700? I truthfully have no earthly clue since I am more of a Kirby person myself. But I am sure most others will know! LOL! ~~K~~ P.S. But I am still the first to guess, I think!

Checkrate/Likes *Is the top cleaner* a 475? It's gorgeous! All that orange detailing, and the nicest dirtfinder lamp of a pre-150 model (in my opinion). My inital though with the bottom one is that it's a rebuilt 700 too, (no orange motor band, but IBAISAIC presumably makes it post-1926), but the four rivets holding the plate on suggest otherwise. love the swirly bits on it though! T'ain't a commercial, is it? I look forward to reading what you have to say about them on your site too! Si

Checkrate/Likes The 475 is stunning - and interestingly, even though one of mine has its original bag, the font on it is different - the font on yours is the same as on the Junior 375. Mine has the older-style lettering (it's the one I used as wallpaper on my website). And I see yours has its bag-support strap intact, too - it's always exciting to find one which has lasted! As for the second, I agree, a Model 700 Special - I LOVE the badge on it! I saw a 541 Special on eBay a while back with a badge like that sometime last year, and thought then what a beautiful design it was.

Checkrate/Likes I forgot to add - very excited to hear they'll be appearing on your website soon - everything on there's done so well, and with such depth of information, it was a real inspiration to me while I was trying to do mine! Do I spy your Lewyt treasure-chest behind the 475?

Checkrate/Likes *A bit more teasing...* Yes, Kyle (vacuumkid3), you get the Grand Prize for being the first to guess the second machine is a 700. That's really a very good guess! And, yes, Simon (74simon), the first machine is indeed a 475. It really is a lovely machine isn't it. And, no, Jack (vintagehoover), that's not a Lewyt Treasure Chest behind the 475, it's an Electrolux! They came in several colors - off-white, brown, green and dark red. I have them all but the dark red one; still waiting to find thatun! I have to say, Jack, it was seeing the "before and after" photod of your 700, 800, 900 and 543, then the photo of your 925, and THEN perusing your web site at some length, that got me excited about old Hoovers again. Funny how that happens, eh! :) Stay tuned....... still working on my little project!

Checkrate/Likes *Hoover page* Charles... Your web site never ceases to amaze me.. I must say, after being a strictly "Kirby" collecter, My interest is definately peaked in Hoover now. It's funny, when I was younger, My grandmother had a Kirby Dual Sanitronic 80 that I adored and my mother had a yellow Hoover convertible that I had no interest in. I remember how excited I was the day a Kriby rep did an in-home demo and my parents traded the convertible for a Kirby Heritage back in 1981 (I slept with the kirby in my bedroom for the longest time!) But after reading all of this great Hoover information, I find myself wishing mom (meaning me actually!) still had that convertible and that I'm wanting to get at least one of the older hoover models similar to the ones you show on your website. You website is awesome! I have read and re-read your info on the Kirby 500 series countless times because I find it so facinating and informative. Keep up the GREAT work!

Checkrate/Likes I love the page! Very interesting, and all the good condition of the 475 is all the more amazing considering that it sat outside for 25 years! The video was an especially nice touch, and I was surprised how different it sounds to my 475! Quieter, and lower in pitch... The 700 Special is beautiful! We didn't have 'Specials' over here as such - factory reconditioned machines were available, but they weren't given any special names or updated with more modern features. The badge on my Model 543 states: 'Rebuilt by Hoover Ltd, at Perivale, Greenford, Middlesex.' And my parts-donor 825s was sold to me by a man who said he'd bought it in the 1950's as a reconditioned machine. How exciting it must have been to rummage though those huge piles of old vacs! That would be my dream come true, I think!

Checkrate/Likes *I have added another video clip* to my new Hoover page, of the 700 Special. Nothing too exciting, just the machine turning on and off but at least people can hear what it sounds like. I may also add some photos and video of my 541 while I'm in the mood to do this. Checkrate/Likes *I want to appologize gentlmen...* The is a great, great thing Charles Richard has done. I did not mean to throw a Kirby thing in here on this thread I was only asking him the question. Please do not get me wrong I do love all of the vacuums that were ever created as Tom G and I were having a conversation on the phone about this I do not down grade any vacuums, each have their great qualities. I have a great collection of Hoovers as well and I have both of these machines and think they are incredible. My favorite hoover is the one in particular that has Hoover light up on top of machine, like the Dual 50 Kiby. I know you all know that particular model number. That is my downfall, I do not always remember model numbers very well. David

Checkrate/Likes *By the way,* I have fixed the "Drooping Bumper Syndrome" problem on the 475. This tends to happen with many of this body style of Hoover because there is no center rivet in the bumper, just one on each end. That is, it happens with the ones that don't become petrified! Anyway, what I did was just put a little dab of Pliobond right there in the center and it does hold it in place.

Checkrate/Likes I had to do that (except with mounting tape) on my Kirby 515/505 nozzle. It is the 505 nozzle on the 515 that I am talking about. Now it looks fine. But to prolong the life of rubber...silicone spray! My dad has been doing that for many years, and it really does work! Maybe that can help the rubber bumper, Charles! ~~K~~

They only get mad and say mean things, so I just let them luxuriate in their ignorant bliss. When they don't gey any bids, they'll find out for themselves...

Checkrate/Likes *WOW* What a fantastic article (and "See it Clean" videos), your 475 is just in BEAUTIFUL shape! I love the 700 as well. I never would have thought that, like you said, it sat in someone's backyard for 25 years. I know that Southwest climate played a large part in preserving the machines in the center, though. Discovering all of those machines must have been amazing...too much to take in at once. Wonder how many more vacuum treasure troves are out there that haven't been found yet? My Hoover 103 (that needs a restoration) has that scissor-top bag holder, although the bag itself is a later replacement. The elastic straps are in great shape as well (and stronger than one might think), so I leave the bag detached from the handle. --Austin

Checkrate/Likes *Wow...* You were so lucky with that 475! It's amazing that a cleaner stored outside for so long buffed up so nicely. My first 750 had been stored somewhere damp, although maybe not outside, and the agitator 'rack' was seized solid. Despite all the WD40 and brute force I applied, all I ended up with was a snapped agitator rack lever and a painfully split fingernail when said lever tore off... although the machine did have a decent bag and badge for my second machine. Incidentally, could anyone spare the small spring that holds the lever in place? Mine fell out, and not knowing what it was (I thought it was an old paperclip that had been stuck in the cleaner), I THREW IT OUT!!! Ooops... So the lever on my 750 is now held flush with some scotch tape... Si
