Heres a few pics from our meet-up over the bank holiday weekend, having done Hoover 100th last year we wanted to concentrate on Electrolux & others, I had such a good time doing & enjoying that I only took a few pics, BUt others took loads so I`m sure they will post later!!

What we tried to get together was a "Wall of UK Lux" from 1920`s up to 80`s, Alistair (Vacbear58) diligently worked through the timeline placing all the vacs in chronological order and also withing the 3 areas of budget, middle and de-luxe!!!

I love first two Hotpoints on the left! The bags have a very similar design to the Premiers of the same era here in the states.

The wall of Lux

vacbear58's profile picture
We managed to get and example of every UK postwar Lux (branded as Lux I mean) from 1945 to 1985 or maybe a little bit longer. Another cream cake to the person who can list the missing models.

As Mike said, they are arranged in market segment and time order left to right

There were some Hoovers too

vacbear58's profile picture
With a couple of Hotpoints and a Goblin Wizard at the back and a Vactric Junior nudging in from the right.

I had an interesting discussion with Jack about the design of the Hoover cannisters. I had thought that since the UK equivalent of the model 40 came over here, the model development would have been done in the UK, but he tells me (and if anyone knows, Jack knows) that the design was done in the US, which makes me wonder why UK Hoovers were so different from US Hoovers.

Following from an earlier thread, the burgandy and silver model at the front (417) was contemporary with US model 55, the olive green and white model (419) was approximatly 1964, and the blue model at the back (507) approximatly 1968.

The red one at the front is a late model Freedom which came out around 1973

1960s Hotpoints

vacbear58's profile picture
The upright is Mike's the cannister (the Masterclean) is mine. I have only seen one other of these and that was in around 1970. It sounds very like an Electrolux when when switched on. The floor tool is a replacement.

For a machine which was around, in one form or another for YEARS the upright is also very rare. This is a late 1960s version. There are no cable clips for the flex (cord) which gives the handle a very streamlined appearence but a pouch on teh back of the bag. You dont really see it in the pictures but the flex was colour co-ordinated with the hood

There were a couple of "Germans" as well

vacbear58's profile picture
This has appeared in another thread, but for completness here it is again. It seems to date from 1970 or so. Jack brought along his upright Miele S7 which was a very impressive beast, but I did not take any pictures of it. We have already establised that the floor tool and hose are not origional

'...which makes me wonder why UK Hoovers were so differe

2 very different markets with very different tastes, budgets and requirements; true then, true now! Look at the contrast between the UK Luxes and the US Luxes, for example.

Here's a patent for the Hoover Freedom - note that the inventor is listed as 'Howard L Allen of North Canton, Ohio', and the assignee as 'The Hoover Company, North Canton, Ohio'. And yet, as far as I know, it was never sold outside of Europe.

Post# 79858 , Reply# 31   9/3/2009 at 11:51 (5,338 days old) by vintagehoover ()

Here's the pivoting tool conversion system, as seen on the Turbomaster models which didn't have onboard tools. And note, it's shown on a Concept-type cleaner! Again, invented by 'Carl W Goodin of NorCa', and assigned to 'The Hoover Company, NorCa'...

Can anyone tell me if any US cleaners (Aside from the Innovation!) used this design?

Post# 79859 , Reply# 32   9/3/2009 at 11:54 (5,338 days old) by vintagehoover ()

Henry Dreyfuss' patent - again, North Canton, Ohio. I'm sure you'll recognise the cleaner!

Thanks guys for sharing your obviously awesome time in pictures for us to see. Mike, it was great to see that you

Re: The wall of Lux

If its only from 45 to 85 that you want the major one that I see missing arethe models 48, 60, 310, 312, 96, and 355.

Of the older ones you could have used the 6, 10, 12, 15, 16, 18 and 24 as well

LOL - so have I missed any????

Doug

PS - Love the display. Its really nice to see them all together.

vacbear58's profile picture
There is actually one more and that is the 117, similar to the little blue 116. But these models are very rare (as is the 30) as I guess most of the production was exported to earn foreign currency after WW2.

But I still think you deserve the cake, now you have to come to a future meet to be presented with it ......

LOL Al:

Carefull - I may take you up on that sometime. The 117 was one that I wasnt certain of as I've never even seen a picture of it (nor the 15 come to think of it).

It was fun figuring out which models you had pictured there then trying to think of the missing ones as you actually had a couple I havnt seen before in the line up.

Do you know anything about the early commercial Electroluxes? I have a model 33 but no parts for it and have a possibility of getting a 73. I'd like to find out what actually came with them.

Never mind the Goblins

vacbear58's profile picture
We might just manage on the Vactrics but not so sure on the Goblins. HOWEVER, seeing that Lux 160 of Neil's just creeping into the picture above, do you have any more of this rarely spotted beauty? There are plenty of 170s around but this is the first 160 I have seen, and I need to go to Tara King (Avengers - Thingmyjig) to see a 152. We have the challenge next time of the Lux uprights too :) Never stops does it :)

As I write this I cannot believe it is a week since we all broke up from the meet. The time just flew by, always the sign of a good time

Oreck

I just noticed in the U.K. the XL-3600 we have here in the states as the "40th Anniversary Edition" over there is dubbed the "Champagne Edition." Oreck is now selling a 45th Anniversary Edition on QVC, in either red or green, but unfortunately nowhere on the cleaner does it say anything about an anniversary edition. I was equally disappointed when Hoover did the same thing with their centennial machines last year....

I am more than sure that you are not the only person on that position, which makes me think "Webcams". Our meetings so far have been pretty free format, beause there is always so much to discuss, but with a little thought we could possibly arrange "presentations" via web cam which would allow others from overseas to interact (although possibly with delays). There are others with more knowledge than I, but in these days of web conferencing it cant be that difficult

Ah - not in the UK! The farce is of course that Hoover US' 100th Anniversary has nothing to do with Hoover-Candy's, since they're two separate companies. Also, since Hoover didn't come to the UK until 1919, Hoover-Candy should be celebrating their 100th Anniversary in 2019!
