Thanks Jack.

The dusting brush does look an odd shape. I would have expected the neck of the dusting brush to have been angled.

The cleaner itself sounds as though it builds its power on start-up.

Do you think it has good performance?

That thing has the best start-up sound ever.

Hoover UK?

Is Hoover UK made by the same company (TTI) as Hoover US?

Hoover UK and TTI Hoover are two different companys. I do know you can get US hoovers in the Uk under the name VAX.

Very nice Jack, and creative! Can't wait to see the S7, and what you'll come up with for that! :-)

Fun Video Jack thanks for sharing. Did you pick up much dirt in that demo?

Rolls_rapide - the dusting brush is a strange shape when it's on the end of the Explorer Lance:

Photobucket

But it's a perfect fit when you take off the Explorer Lance, and fit it to the end of the handle:

Photobucket

The Freedom has an 1800w soft-start motor - a nice gesture by Hoover towards improving the motor's lifespan. The Slalom has a 1200w motor, and they haven't used the soft-start system with that.

Performance is really quite good, I have to say. And it brings up the carpet-pile like almost nothing else I own! VERY heavy in use, though. And maybe a little on the short-side.

kirbfan94 - sounds great, doesn't it?! Like a jet taking off! It takes maybe 4 seconds to hit full-speed, so it actually sounds a little bit like one of the older Hoover models starting up!

kenmore81 - thanks! And yes, sadly missing another half for my 'couple'. *sigh*

vibragroomer - No, Hoover US are owned by TTI, and bagintheback is correct; we do get a selection of Hoover US products here, sold under the Vax brand-name. They're not totally identical to their US equivalents, though. Hoover Europe is owned by Candy, and, name aside, has nothing to do with Hoover US. It's ironic; Hoover US products, badged as Vax, compete in the UK market against Hoover-badged products from Hoover-Candy!

Andrew - thanks! Want a cameo role? I can think of a part that would be just perfect for you! ;p

Terry - not a lot of dirt, but I've vacuumed every day this week, so there shouldn't be a lot left to find!

Thanks for all the information & photos

I really appreciate it. Almost like a 'test & try before you buy' (for the rest of us at any rate).

I do notice from your latest photos, that the carpet height settings have been fiddled with. Previously, the hard-floor setting was on the second highest position. Now it is on the third highest position.

I take it that 'Intensive Clean' is for pet hair that is trodden into the carpet?

So does that mean older machines would be able to 'intensively clean' if you cranked the height down to the lowest setting?

As you'll doubtless be aware, in the past, the Hoover Cleaning Principle has always relied on the action of raising a carpet from the floor by suction, so it's held against the nozzle, whilst the grit is gently fluttered out by the vibration of the beater bars on a cushion of air.

With our heavier, modern, wall-to-wall carpets, and consumers' demands that an upright cleaner should be able to cope both with carpets AND hard flooring, Hoover have done away with the beater bar design, in favour of an all-bristle brush-roll. Since bristles have more 'give' than solid beater bars, the settings have been adjusted to alter the cleaning modes. The hard-floor setting's the second-lowest notch.

I don't think an Activator or Agitator Hoover would 'intensive clean' in the same way, because the beater bars won't get down into the carpet fibres, and limit the extent to which the bristle tufts they're paired with will.

Too bad

the UK models aren't sold here in the States.
