Hey Guys,
My friend is looking to buy a new bagless upright vacuum cleaner. I'm not into bagless vacuums,so I don't know much about them. I much prefer bagged models, but he's bent on having a bagless. What do you think is the best bagless vacuum currently on the market. Also do you think that Dysons are what they are all cracked up to be? Are they worth the $500.00 price tag?
Thanks a bunch!

Alex

dysons are over priced and over engineered...but i do admire the ddm motor.

id say a good used hvr windtunnel...or new one will do the trick..not the s/p mdl...from what ive seen at the shop the under $200 bagless w/t are dam hard to beat

I do not like Dysons. I have had two of them and they got sent back. I did not like them at all. I have heard that the Hoover Whisper is an ok machine though. Or the new Eureka Enviro Vac. Both priced reasonably

Chase, I must disagree with you. The reason your dysons didn't work well on your freize rugs is because the Dysons you had were made for cleaning the low pile carpet in the UK. The new Dyson air muscle was made to clean all types of American carpeting. Its designed to go deeper into the carpeting yet still be easy to push. Plus the fact the brushroll lifts up to clean bare floors makes it better then any other upright for floors. The Eureka EnviroVac is no different then any other bagless vacuum. You have a low efficency cyclone (a cyclone that doesnt taper downwards to form a smaller diameter.) the fluff and hair is thrown to the outside while the dust and air goes into a filter which clogs just like a bag. On a Dyson the air goes into the low efficency cyclone and enters the shroud which keeps and crumbs or fine air from going into the high efficency cyclones. Then it enters the 7 cyclones then goes into the pre motor filter. This process allows only clean air to enter the filter and the vacuum maintains its power unlike the EnviroVac which will clog as soon as you push it across your rugs. The only vacuum that has a system like dyson's is the Hoover Platinum Series bagless upright. So these are the only two bagless vacuum that works properly. But at the prices of the Hoover you can get a Dyson which doesnt tear apart the rugs. Even though I love my Hoovers I must say the new ones are no where near as good as the Concept series. So before looking over the dyson just try it. I have found everybody who tries one (who isn't a vacuum collector) loves them. Just ask anybody that owns one.

Best Bagless Vacuum

I am not a bagless lover but if it's a bagless machine I would have to vote for the Dyson. Anyone considering a Dyson should try one out before buying. Mine is very heavy to lift and the attachments have good suction but are not easy to use. My Dyson is too aggresive on my carpets, but I do think it is the best bagless I have used and the easiest to empty.

get a good used Filter Queen.

In my experience of using and reparing any bagless vacuum, I would say one word..."DIRTY".
I would suggest an older model Filter Queen. She can get one for between 200 and 300 dollars from ebay...or even craigslist.

Brad,

The Filter Queen is no different than the EnviroVac. The outside is a low efficency cyclone, then above is the cellulose and medipure filter. It will clog with dust because it still have the filter. Go to any Filter Queen in your collection, pick up the cone and you will see that the cone is covered in a fine layer of dust. It worked great in 1947, but it became outdated with the invention of the Cyclon. The Cyclon was James Dyson's first machine. It was sold only in Japan under the G-Force name. Only 2 are still known to exist. One owned by James Dyson himself and the other is now in the Tacony Vacuum Historical Center. It had instant tool conversion and was actually the first vacuum in the world that had onboard tools. It actually came before the Regina Housekeeper. But in nationally sold machines it was the Housekeeper. The Cyclon was seen on "Tommorow's World", a UK television series, going up against a Hoover Junior on Flour. The Junior was shooting out dust at Kieran Prendiville as it clogged. But the Cyclon took in everything and left a spotless carpet. And also, it is simply a fact, that a Dyson has more water lift and air watts than ANY machine that Health-Mor Industries has EVER produced.

Hi Matt,

you're slightly mistaken about the Cyclon/ G-Force machines.

Beginning production in August 1983, the Cyclon was indeed the first application of James Dyson's dual cyclone technology, but it was manufactured by Zanussi, and sold in the UK through the Klene-eez catalogue. They made 500 in total, and I'm actually aware of 3 left in existance; James Dyson has one, there's Tom Gasko's one, and there's at least one other, which resides in the 'Products and Samples' room of a vacuum cleaner manufacturer.

The G-Force was made under licence in Japan by Apex Inc. from 1986. Coming with a £2000 pricetag, it was largely similar to the Cyclon, but had a manual height adjustment on the floorhead. I believe G-Force continued into the early 1990s.

It was the royalties from G-Force sales which provided Sir James with the means to begin the development and manufacture of his first Dyson cleaner, the DC01, in 1993.

Here's a photo I took of the G-Force in the Science Museum, London. There's also one in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Wow, thanks Jack. The only other place I've ever seen a picture of a G-Force is on the Dyson website. I actually like the appearance of it better than later Dyson models. At that time, the only bagless machine we had (or would have for years to come) in the states was the Amway CMS-1000, which evolved into the ClearTrak. Then came the Fantom Thunder.

Post# 73873 , Reply# 10   7/1/2009 at 03:38 (5,384 days old) by vintagehoover ()

I've just double-checked in 'Against the Odds', James Dyson's autobio:, the G-Force sold for £1200, not £2000. Also, he claims that as the book was being written (first published in 1997), G-Force sales were worth £12m a year, which shows how long it was made for...

The Truth about Tomorrow's World...

The Tomorrow's World demo of the Cyclon created quite a stir in the industry at the time - not because of the new technology, but because of the blatant cheating the producers employed to ensure the Cyclon won!

What's wrong with this picture? Here's a clue - it should be obvious to anyone familiar with the 'Hoover Principle' of cleaning a carpet...

Photobucket

As a side-note, and myth-making aside, the Cyclon didn't leave the carpet 'spotless', either. There's a very obvious track of dust left behind...

Id bet....

A Certain person got the TW producers to "adjust" the performance of the Junior.....

Kinda typical really....

Tomorrow's World

Do my eyes deceive me, or is the Hoover Junior's 'Height Right' lever pulled back to the highest pile setting for a low to medium pile carpet?!?

Lovely picture of my favourite cleaner, the Electrolux 'Trilobite'.

A fine machine to use when you are too warm and tired to push a conventional machine around during these lazy Summer days!

I have only two, and I like both. One of them is the Hoover EmPower and the other is the Bissell Lift-Off Bagless. They both clean well, but the Bissell has to have the filters cleaned almost every use. The EmPower is very nice and powerful and really grooms the carpet.

Post# 73926 , Reply# 16   7/1/2009 at 12:13 (5,384 days old) by vintagehoover ()

Rolls_rapide - Congrats, you got it! The Junior's cruising along on the highest possible setting...it's not even in contact with the floor!

Not really a surprise, then, that the Cyclon "won".

As I say, the industry at the time were not fooled by this test, and I believe that the Tomorrow's World producers were blamed for rigging the test. If the Junior had been set correctly, the results would have been a LOT closer, and that doesn't make for good, dramatic television.

As far as I'm concerned, the Cyclon plays an important enough role in vacuum history without the results of this rather stupid, pointless test. No one ever said the Model O was a brilliant cleaner, either!

Try the Kenmore Progressive Bagless Direct Drive

eurekaprince's profile picture
Consumer Reports has highly rated both the bagged and bagless versions of the blue Kenmore Progressive upright for a few years now. They even rate it better than any Dyson - primarily because of excellent carpet cleaning produced by that fantastic belt-less brush roll designed by Panasonic. This brush roll is really cool - the motor is actually inside the roll!

The hose is nicely placed on this machine and won't tip the unit when used for tool cleaning. There is also an on-board mini turbo nozzle for stairs.

I would also reccomend a Kenmore Progressive bagless,I have had the bagged version for some time and it is a great vacuum, and not too loud for a modern vacuum

I also think the Dyson is the best bagless. The vacs with paper pleated filters just clog so fast and are much more messy than a Dyson to empty. I like the features or the Dyson attachments as well. I know the original Fantoms had their share of problems and the hose suction was dismal at best, but I really liked their performance on carpet and the fact that there wasn't a pleated filter inside the chamber. Of course lots of people are copying the Dyson design (lack of paper filter in the dirt chamber I'm not even talking about the cyclone assembly (Bissell Healthy Home, and the new "heavy duty" version of it in addition to the new Hoover that has already been mentioned). My Dyson performs great and is pretty user friendly, and I have the most awful model they ever made (DC14)! I wouldn't even consider any other bagless machine as an only vac!

"I have the most awful model they ever made (DC14)! &qu

In what way is it awful?

Here in the UK, it is still classed as the best performing upright bagless.

Post# 74122 , Reply# 23   7/2/2009 at 12:51 (5,382 days old) by vacuumfreeeke ()

It's got the clutch system (which clicks every now and then during use even though nothing is stuck) and the little brushroll instead of a real round one. The attachments are on top of the dirt chamber and get in the way and fall off when carrying or emptying the chamber. I even preferred the DC07 even though it shared the same brushroll and clutch as the DC14. I preferred the trigger pull dirt trap release and also the fact that the attachment handle is the same one as the upright handle (just flipped it around). It's like they took all the features that I don't like and combined them on this one model!

Fantom vs. Dyson

"I know the original Fantoms had their share of problems and the hose suction was dismal at best..."

No it wasn't. I have a Fantom Thunder and I always found the suction power to be quite adequate. In a way, I'm kinda sorry Fantom went out of business and Dyson moved in to "fill the vacuum." I found the Fantom brushroll did an excellent job of grooming the carpet, whereas the Dyson's roller brush is too harsh. After going over the carpet several times with the Dyson, there shouldn't be that much carpet fiber in the collection bin.

Filter Queen

the BEST bagless vac--NO dust flying around + NO cyclones to clean out + better-than-HEPA/ULPA filtration + powerful suction = beats the competitors!

Post# 74206 , Reply# 26   7/2/2009 at 19:59 (5,382 days old) by vacuumfreeeke ()

Every Fantom I have ever used (Fury, Thunder, and Cyclone XT several models of each) has had poor hose suction. Maybe there was a design flaw or all of them were broken. Hopefully the Lightning had better since it was a canister.

Dyson versus Kenmore Bagless

eurekaprince's profile picture
Hi Bobby - I know that some people are real fans of Dyson and consider them the best in the category of bagless machines. But I really think it's also good to look at some of the competition.

In the current Consumer Reports ratings of vacuums, the top-rated Dyson bagless upright is the Airmuscle DC28, selling for a steep $600. It is actually is one of the only Dysons to rate a "very good" at carpet cleaning.

But there are two other bagless machines that rate better in the testing, and are far cheaper. The Kenmore Progressive 36932 is a Consumer Reports Best Buy at USD350 (now on sale for $70 off), and is easier to push and pull than the Airmuscle, is better at pet hair removal, has a headlight and an on-board mini turbine nozzle, and a really easy-to-use electronic control panel right on the handle. It's also got a "gentle" setting for the brushroll which slows it down for delicate throw rugs, and has a sleeker head on it to get under more furniture.

The next bagless upright that rates better than the Dyson Airmuscle is, believe it or not, the Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary Edition U5768-900. It also removed pet hair better, and also is more easy to push and pull than the Dyson. And it only costs USD160! For the difference in price between this Hoover and the Dyson DC28, you could get a cheap Kenmore canister as a second machine for all your non-carpet cleaning, and use it to clean the dust bin and the pleated filters of the bagless upright once a week!

For those of us on a real budget, and not looking for a bagless upright, I absolutely LOVE the Hoover Tempo Widepath! It is excellent at carpet cleaning (better than all Dysons and Dirt Devils) and only costs $80! For that money, I could add a fancy suction only Miele canister for all my non-carpet cleaning and still be ahead at the bank.....

Have a great weekend gang!

I have a fantom cyclone and from what I hear they pull 92" at the hose. I love it. also I had gotten today a dyson dc07 and a dc14 and both are great performers. however if I were to choose between the fantom or the Dyson I would have to do with Fantom thunder but because IMHO they are kind of difficult to find I woulod go with the DC 14 the dc 14 features a filter inside the container and is easy to clean

This is my bagless and it never loses suction and works quite well and seems to be contstructed a lot better thant the dyson. I am fairly pleased with it. I have not used it in forever but it works quite well and has a great warranty.

Bissell Heathy Home is a Excellent choice

Hi,New here I would just like add a Bissell Heathy Home Bagless Upright is Great choice!I have had mine now for 2 years trouble free!It has Excellent tool suction plus the 7 cyclones with endless suction( even full to empty bin line )very easy to empty dust container ( push the latch release & all the dirt comes out the bottom of the bin ),plus the added bonus of two motor system instead of one, costs 200.00 less than a Dyson plus comes with a 5 year warranty.
But if I could go back 8 years ago when I had my Original Fantom Lightning Cannister was in my opinion was the Best Bagless Vacuum made in North America.Too Bad I sold it when company went under Boy am I sorry now!Very User friendly Design,Excellent suction,Luved the stair hugging feature the Best also besides the mini powerhead was Amazing most useful attachment for the car, furniture, etc. very nimble. Also the Best Carpet Vacuum I have ever owned next to my Bissell.I was Lucky enought to find another one at a Thrift store for $10.00 CDN,but now on the look out for parts, needs better powerhose & wand. But I think in the is worth it to spend the money on restoring to NEW!The main unit & powerhead still work Great after 9 years 1998 model year!I hope this Helps? Thanks

A fine bagless vacuuming device, the Dyson and it's Cyclon & Fantom forerunners, but I would like to re-iterate my feelings and thumbs-up impressions about the still available on closeout sale Sears Kenmore PREMALITE upright as a lightweight stylishly handsome alternative. See link for previous discussion.

As mentioned there, as in all bagless contraptions, there is one potentially major design flaw, easily avoided. Follow manufacturers recommendations on what to grasp to lift and carry the vacuum around and up the stairs...

The LG designed Premalite wand is held in place with two side by side metal latches that engage in a plastic form screwed around the aluminum front wand. Picking up the Premalite by the wand will put too much stress on these latches and break out one or both of the engagement slots eventually. This has cause many returns and poor performance reviews. Just like a Dyson, pick it up by the generous contoured handle on top of the bin and there's no worries.

Close-up of the latch.

No longer showing up on Sears.ca, this link is to the Sears USA Website where the price is about a low as it's going to go...unless you find one at a closeout Center as I did for $25 each. Worth checking out and as is a Fantom Fury etc, I believe this Premalite is destined to be a future collectible. :-)

The debris in my one bin is from running it over my duvet cover as an upright and also using the turbotool nozzle on the end of the wand and the carpets in this room - last week when it was 'change the bedsheets' time. As good as a Dyson.

Dave
