Hi everyone,

I'm at my Mum's sorting out the bulk of my collection and rediscovered this little gem that I've owned from new and has had very little use. This is the model that forced Dyson to sue Hoover for patent infringement.

I really like the Vortex, it has one of the old style Hoover activators with beater pads and stiff brushes, a very long hose and decent performance. It also features automatic cord rewind, something that no Dyson upright has offered.

I have included a picture of my Hoover Hurricane that didn't infringe Dyson's patent.

I hope you enjoy the pics.

Roger

I always liked the Vortex range. I remember Asda selling them for a while and my friend's mum buying one. They were a lot better in performance and much more attractive than the DC01 from what I remember.

Yes Chris, the Vortex was a much better performer than the DC01 and better looking. The dust container was easier to empty too and the tools were easy to use.

Although based on the PurePower, the Vortex was better made, but then it was made in EC (I assume Portugal) and the quality was better than the China made cleaners.

They seem to be getting more and more scarse these days - which is a real shame. Even the later models without the triple vortex were better than Dysons of the time and didn't have half the filter trouble and reliability problems that Hoover have now. It does seem, however, that the Slalom and Freedom are a step in the right direction for Hoover.

My sister still has the V2000 that I had, then I passed it on to her.

Mine was the original version, released in April 1999. It had a washable foam exhaust filter at launch. The 'S-Class' / HEPA filtered version followed on a few months later. I ordered an 'S-Class' filter as an optional extra, to upgrade my machine. The original 'S-Class' filter was a visibly pleated affair. Later versions of the filter had an overlaid honeycomb shield to prevent damage to the pleats.

Which? decreed that the Triple Vortex was a good performer against the Dyson models.

I liked the Triple vortex hose and tools far better than the Dyson clumsy wand affair: and several friends and family agreed.

My sister was in possession of the cleaner when her gas boiler service technician called to do the annual maintenance on the hot water system. He asked to use her hoover, and he said that the Hoover was far better looking than the Dysons.

Hi Roger.

So the sort through has begun! apologies for not getting back to you, re your e-mail - am totally snowed under with stuff, including moving storage again! will replay as soon as possible.

So the Vortex is the first machine to be shown off - and what a stunner.
I saw one of these on ebay a few months ago, but was collection only and out of reach unfortunately - like so many things.

The little, if any usage, its received is definately reveraled in its condition - stunning, absolutely stunning.

I am still a learner in the world of cleaners, so i have to ask the turbopowerpaul/matchboxpaul question - whats the model number and when were they introduced?

definately agree with the comments that they look better than Dysons. personally, i dont like the wild and whacky designs that prevail these days - i like my cleaner to look like a cleaner, if you know what i mean.

Myself and rob own, what i assume was, the replacement for/development of the Vortex......the model W2600 Whirlwind.

Not wishing to divert the subject matter away from the vortex, but please can someone fill me in on the history etc of the Whirlwind, so that i can put everything into context.

oh yes, and where does the Hurricane fit in?

great machine Roger.
Cant wait to see what else you rediscover.

in anticipation!!!!
paul

Much prefer the autoflex and orange detailing of the Vortex, over the Whirlwind. The Vortex looks much smarter for it.

The 'Triple Vortex' models were the superior line, 'Whirlwind' was an entry range.

There was also Hoover 'Cyclone' (in yellow, I think). One model of Hoover (possibly the 'Cyclone' could take clear plastic polythene 'hoover bags', as hygienic liners.

After the Dyson court palaver, the 'Vortex Power' range was launched, suction power similar to Dyson DC04.

Dyson then launched DC07 @ 330 air watts.

Hoover retaliated with 'Hurricane' @ 350 air watts (at hose end, when empty!)

i really like your collection..very nice . as i dislike bagless vacs, but yours are a standout. i love that brushroll...are those beater bars..circular along the lengh? how do those differ from the ones on a VG2...

Howard

I believe Hoover called the beater bars beater pads and were first seen in Hoover's Turbopower range introduced in 1982/3. Hoover called it an 'activator' and claimed it reactivated the fibres of the carpet, which it did, very well. I'm sure other members will agree with me that the activator brushroll was the best all plastic hoover brushroll design. The brushrolls on current Hoover uprights don't feature beater bars at all and do not do as good a job. The performance of Hoover's dire Purepower would be greatly improved if the activator was fitted instead of the soft brush brushroll.

I will be adding some pictures of my Turbopower 2 shortly, that features the same activator, with excellent edge cleaning due to the extra long side brushes.

'Activator' agitator

Definately the best of the plastic agitators, but only when fitted in late Junior U1104, Turbopowers, Turbomasters, Purepowers and Vortex machines.

There was a wimpy little version of the activator fitted to the 'Turbo 500' power nozzle, that fitted Sensotronic and Compact cylinder models. It never seemed to have the same "reactivating" power as the upright versions.

Suddenly remembered...!

The model of upright cyclonic cleaner, based on the V2000 design mould, which took the polythene hygienic bags was known as the 'Cyclean'. I think that machine was a blue colour.

'Cyclone'

Calum

I had a few models with the Turbo 300 head. I think it was called Turbo 300, not 500. 300 because it was 300mm wide.
It was the best power nozzle Hoover made, better than the Electro Kinetic head fitted to the early Sensotronic and Compact Total System.

My favourite cleaner with the Turbo 300 head was the Hoover Sensotronic Total System 400. I also had the Total System 500, but the power hose on the remote models had a fault that would cut power if you yanked the hose quickly. This happened on my Audio System 300 too. Because the Sensotronic System 400 had the controls on the cleaner, it didn't suffer from this problem.

It's a shame that most UK manufacturers don't offer power heads as an option. Sebo, Numatic and Miele are the only ones I can think of, though Miele have discontinued the Revolutions.
Oh yes, there's the Dyson Motorhead.

You're probably right about my error, it was some time ago now.

The Turbo head was also available for Hoover 'Alpina' cylinder cleaners too.

I had the 'Alpina Tria 3', a Currys exclusive model with remote control on the power hose, and a power take-off socket on the handgrip for the power head.

My model had a habit of misreading the power +/- signal and would suddenly surge with power when you tried to lower the power. There was no automatic setting, but there was a 'Boost for a few seconds' button.

I found the hose incredibly heavy and awkward to work with, so I sold it on.

When I first bought the cleaner and unpacked it, the 'glamour' disc on one of the wheels promptly fell off. It had never been properly fitted.

Alpina

Calum,

I had the Alpina Tria and remember using it with the Turbo 300 nozzle. I made my own tv ad for it which is something else I hope to put on YouTube.

I liked the Alpina range, but they were very heavy and far from silent as Hoover claimed with their "Power Of Silence" strapline.
I wrote to Hoover at the time to complain about the noise level of the Alpina, but never got a response.

I still have the base model.

Mine was black in colour, the control panel was just a row of LED lights, the bag check indicator was electronic.

I think the model number of my machine was something like "SC 198".

I had the yellow Cyclean for a while. Good machine but ever so bulky to use. There was also a limited light blue Cyclean that TJ Hughes used to sell.

Nice video.

To be honest I don't think the filter changed that much, using a paper pleated HEPA ring (S18) that the Vortex also used. Dyson didn't have a problem with the vacuum cleaner - it was the advertising & usage of the patent claim that Hoover put forward that Dyson took issue with. I do recall getting poly string pull bags with my Cyclean which was unusual at the time and can still be found online, pack of 10 /H53 code.

There are plenty of news links and paper editorials reporting that Dyson had taken Hoover to court over infringement of patents - certainly the Dyson Dual Cyclone system and the system used in Hoover are different IMHO.

The link below refers to intellectual property, which Hoover did not seek permission to use.
