Found this at the local Goodwill while running an errand. Notice how the wheel covers still had their protective film on them! The belt was so paper thin you could stop the brushroll with just a finger. I've never seen a Heritage before with the cloth fill tube. It honestly looks as if this is the original belt on this cleaner, when I removed the nozzle guard, the clasps were entirely stiff, and left a fresh scuff in the metal as if they had never been turned before!

I need to get some bags for it, and do a cleanup of it and a bit of metal polishing. Might need to replace the bumper strip, but other than that, everything is pretty much mint on this. The fan has no gouges in it at all. If I had to guess, this cleaner has seen about 50 hours of operation in it's life.

Howard,

Yes I'm going to be keeping my eye out for a Heritage II, another one of my favorite Kirby's. I primarily love it because of the emtor design, always thought it was neat!

This Heritage I was just $19.99. I snatched it up and a hurry and headed for the register.

Andrew

Nice Find

Hi Andrew Very nice Heritage . Looks like with some good polish you can clean it up real well. That is one of Kirbys best. I have the Heritage 2 the next model after that also many 500 series and several other Kirbys. Just to start G 3, 4, 5, 6,. Good luck cleaning it up it already looks good Doug

Hi Andrew!

Congrats on your good find! I also have the same rendition-with the heavy duck cloth fill tube. My serial number is 2820319060. Also, notice that the rug plates on these renditions have no vertical bars either! My other Hertiage does, however, along with the more common black vinyl fill tube.

I love this machine, as I do all of my Kirbys. I have a third one that I need to find a brand new Sani-Emptor box for. The only thing on these styled Kirbys (H1, H2, & Legend) is the bag hook at the top. The design was not the best in my opinion. They are not flexible enough and don't seem to seat properly all of the time. In other words, it's a sloppy design. But, I'll take every one I find! LOL!

Louis

so would no rugplates produce better deep cleaning performance,,or not do as well as one with rug plates.

it

would seem to me that they would, because the carpet would be sucked farther into the nozzle and the brushes would have more contact?

Post# 71841 , Reply# 9   6/10/2009 at 15:19 (5,431 days old) by retardturtle ()

so how far do the brushes pertrude past the bottom plate on yours.....on my hrtg2 i also have the side brushroll screws...currently i have them all the way in with screwheads pointing towards carpet...like yours....and also if i may, on a kirby what are the advantages of the 12in roller over the 14...

Post# 71893 , Reply# 10   6/10/2009 at 21:39 (5,431 days old) by kirbfan94 ()
they

come out about an 1/8 of an inch. the benefits of having a 12 inch nozzle vs 16 inch nozzle is that the suction is more conctrated.

My Hertitage 84 has the black fill tube well has most of it it needs to be replaced

I think I still have the pink cover on the wheels too...photo search

here it is after I changed the belt lifter as the old one was warped maybe from a too hot bulb...plastic arrrgh not like the real Kirby's like the D50

Also had to secure the switch plate over the plug area. something was loose & not laying secure

now all it really needs is the fill tube so it sits & waits in vac pergatory
LOL

would the airflow be affected or stay the same with the 12in head .what set-up do you think would give the best over-all cleaning..kirbys are really new to me and hardly ever get them at the shop...all the good stuff comes in when im off.and the guys at work are their for just a check...

Post# 71954 , Reply# 14   6/11/2009 at 14:53 (5,430 days old) by kirbfan94 ()

if you want to increase the performance start looking for a metal fan. i have one in my legend II and it made a noticable diffrence.

Post# 71958 , Reply# 15   6/11/2009 at 16:04 (5,430 days old) by lux1521 ()

Do the guys with cloth tubes notice a suction loss when the bag starts to get full? A number of years ago I had a heritage 1, and I think it had one of the cloth fill tubes. It seemed like the heavy partially filled bag would crush the tube and block suction off. I suppose there could have been installation issues with it, but it seems more trouble prone that the newer style.

For those with metal fans, are the fans a different shape or something? I would imagine the performance would be the same if the had the same shape.

will look for that metal fan for my kirby, all kirby fans are mixed up in a box at the shop[gray,tan/off white,metl,lexan]...so im gonna have to dig. but i did find a metal fan for my sanitaire 684sc...i think??its blades are not as tall but the rest is the same as the lexan thats on it now.

Post# 71984 , Reply# 17   6/11/2009 at 21:19 (5,430 days old) by kirbfan94 ()

the kirby metal fan has taller and strighter vaines then the plastic fan. that's how they move so much more air.

Awww, look at that rascally green Challenger dusting brush winking at me from behind the Kirby...

Glad to hear it is one its way home to Papa.

Yes folks, Christine is kindly sending me the dusting brush to complete my Sunbeam Challenger. She'll be getting the box back stuffed with FQ bits, which I gather FQ's are not that plentiful out in sunny California. :-)

And Andrew! Love hearing stories like this. How super to find such a find in such great condition for $20! Congratulations, man.

Yippee for this Forum!

Dave

Smiles

Yes Dave, I usually try to ne lickity split but had extenuating circumstances.
Was waiting for photos to send to my parent in long away Australia so Ms Greene packed in a box coddles in bubble wrap surrounded by packing peanuts is now making her way up to Papa in Canada, Who would think that she survived at least 2 attempts to throw her out but alas she survived so she will now again be with her Challenger family up north.

So both Dave & my parents are destined for sweet surprises & yes thank heavens that there are us protectors of everything good & then some still gloriously surviving in this world!!!!

Oppps that the jolly green giant

Restore Complete

vacfanatic's profile picture
Spent all day on this today, it was one of the easiest cleanups I've ever done. I've just got to replace the bumper, and probably the brushroll. What makes this vacuum pretty neat is I believe based on the serial number, it was manufactured in 2/82 and I was born in 3/82. This was the same model my grandfather had, which I always played with as a child when I went to go stay with them. This one will definately be staying in my house for good!

Nice!

Wow- it looks great.

I need to get some work done on my Hoover before I can reveal it here.

Some day- I may have to just dump this hoover and look for another. It is not nearly as nice as that 800 of yours!

Ryan, what Hoover are you referring to?

"I need to get some work done on my Hoover before I can reveal it here. Some day- I may have to just dump this hoover and look for another."

Ugh! horrible word - dump - in reference to one's own vacuum. :-)
Wouldn't it make more sense to get another in trade or at least get another in hand before 'dumping' anything?

Dave

Thank you for all the nice comments. This was a rewarding restoration, much easier than the Sanitronic and G3 I'm working on now... I plan to finish those this summer.

looking forward to those..your resto is one for the books ...but i notice on ebay ..other forums ect. that all the talk is about how great the g3 and up are great to restore and the ones to have for a deep clean, performance.,quality, are g3 and up.....seldom do you hear about the before g3 models...so where do the before g3 models fall short, where do they stand out.

Great find Andrew! The Heritage One is my favorite of the Heritage/Legend series. It looks like new after you cleaned it up. That fill tube is interesting, I never saw the heritage cloth one before.

Hand or machine polish?

Did you do that by hand or with a machine polisher? The only time I have used my Kirby Handi Butler is when polishing Kirbys. I don't know where to find the polishing compound. Any suggestions?

Indeed, Andrew, that is one beautiful looking Heritage. It would definitely seem as if that cloth fill tube is a bojack. My Tradition has the clear vinyl fill tube. Are those auto hose clamps holding each end?

Fill Tube

vacfanatic's profile picture
Karl,

It's about like a hose clamp, but the end of it is press fitted toether. I've pondered removing the entire cloth fill tube, but I really want to keep it original, so have decided to leave it as is. Considering I'm about 98% sure it still had the original belt on it when I got it, and it's got everything else original to it, I really do not wan't to modify it.

Andrew

My hoover

Hey all... well you will see soon!

its in such horrible horrid bad terrible distress shape!

And if it does fail, it is worth 100% trash. It really is very bad.

Post# 72396 , Reply# 37   6/17/2009 at 06:15 (5,425 days old) by atrac (United States )

In the picture I have linked at the bottom of my post, what is the part called with the brass/copper looking strips? I took a Kirby G4 in for service a few years ago and the guy opened it up and showed me how mine was "going bad" and it quickly needed service. I could see little scorch marks on a few of them. I had NO clue what he was talking about and know nothing of the part, so I had to take his word for it and pa the $175 "refurbish fee."

I got it back and noticed no difference in the performance of the Kirby (which is fine because I was working ok before I took it in --- I just needed the hose inside the emptor replaced).

Anyway, FANTASTIC job on the rebuild. WOW it looks gorgeous!

cloth fill tube

thunderhexed's profile picture
my parents bought their Heritage brand new from a Kirby In Home Sales rep back in 81. I remember the day very vividly. The fill tube on that brand new machine was cloth as well. My grandmother bought the exact same model a few months later after trying out moms and loving it. I have that machine now and I had to replace the fill tube about 5 years ago. It was a plastic tube that had cracked when the machine suffered through the infamous Oklahoma City May 3rd Tornado of 1999. Surprisingly, the fan and the fill tube were the only things that had to be replaced. Kirby must have changed the fill tube design at some point from the cloth to the plastic. I do remember the inside of the cloth bag on moms machine being alot more dusty and smelly than granny's since it had that cloth tube. Just my observations. I could be totally wrong.
