Another collector tipped me off to this one being at an Antique Mall in Bandera. I haven't been there since the great flood in 2007, so I decided to go check it out. Attached below are some pictures of the machine.

I paid $5 for it. The price tag said $20 but had a big red X through it and the machine was by the back door. Turns out it had been there so long that they were gonna pitch it out as "unwanted" next week! The woman sold it to me for $5 which I consider a pretty good steal. Some of the cool things about it are the brushroll turns smooth as silk. Motor runs like a top, bearings are PERFECT, and brushes still have considerable life left. Original bag intact (with the exception of the hole that needs mending). ORIGINAL cloth-wrapped Belden cord in like-new shape. Cordwinder works, retraction spring works. Both motor speeds work. Amazing find for $5!

It was pretty dirty...

The rating plate says it's a 3 amp motor.

Original Belden cloth-wrapped cord in the handle, with the cord release string

Closer detail of the cord. I've never had one that was still useable like this.

There's a hole in the base of the bag. Only flaw with the bag fortunately...

The bag's been laundered. Looks a LOT better! It's made out of some sort of fuzzy material kind of like moleskin or something.

The only belt I had around that would fit was a Concept PowerDrive belt. I'll have to find something better eventually, but for now it works fine.

Mended hole. Not the best patch job in the world, but where the rip happened, it was impossible to sew. The bag is actually sewn onto the bag collar and it's pretty fragile right there. Instead, I turned the bag inside-out, shoved a tennis ball down it's neck, and used an iron-on patch from the inside. It didn't perfectly align, so you can see some of the patch through the hole, but it's airtight, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

The trim got tacked back on with extremely hot hot-glue. Works like a champ with rough surfaces like this. It needed to be removable since you have to get under the bumper to release the brushroll.

Glamor Shot! It has a vintage frosted GE light bulb in it too! Worked when I got it, so I didn't have to do anything but clean the reflector!

Side shot! It is a rather elegant machine even though it looks like something from War of the Worlds. Not a model you see every day.

So.....

What's the history of these machines? I'm assuming this was made post-war, but I could be mistaken. Nobody I've talked to so far seems to know much about them! This one was well preserved in the dry air here, and much to my shock.....the bag was actually EMPTY when I got it! That's actually a first for me......

Mt great-grandmother had one of those. I have it now and it has the same problem with the bag.

Hi Eric:

According to the Singer sheet I have the R5 began production in 1940. Unfortunately my sheet is a photocopy and they cut off the dates where machines ended production.

Hi Eric - great job, it looks amazing! A few points about the R-Series history:

The original Singer R-1 was styled by Lurelle Van Arsdale Guild (who, coincidentally, also designed the Electrolux XXX, LX and Models E and G, as well as several Lux tools/polisher/powernozzle!) in 1934.

The styling work for the R-2 - R-5 was by M.S. Park in 1936. (Note the dates the designs were registered may or may not coincide with the actual production dates of the machines). Various other engineers contributed elements of its design, such as the floating nozzle, headlamp lens, hood guard, etc.

The revolutionary slimline Singer uprights which replaced these machines were designed by Raymond Loewy (NOT Henry Dreyfuss! Wouldn't make much sense to have him designing competing products for Hoover AND Singer at the same time - a clear 'conflict of interests'!)

Hope this helps!

Another pic from an article concerning Loewy's work for Singer...

The following two pictures were originally posted by Chad a few months ago...I hope he doesn't mind me posting them again! I've made them slightly bigger, too...

A very interesting picture, showing some prototypes from the development of the slimline model. I'm not sure who the men are; neither is Loewy!

Jack,

Fire away dear friend. The pics weren't mine to begin with, as I believe i found them over on that LIFE website that features different photos from over the years. And they are most appropriate here?

Incidentally, I too just got one of these monsters from Kyle K, that was originally from Rusty Andres. I love the thing. It's so smooth and quiet, nothing like competitive vacs and ABSOLUTLY NOTHING like their next offering. The screamy meeemy twin fan era.

In mine tho the rollerbrush turns backward. IIRC I heard that this was one of a few machines besides the Premier Grand and my Apex "Whichway" Upright that do this...LOL I'll be really redfaced if I just have the belt on wrong...but It works okay. I just ued it last night after seeig this post!!!

Thanks, Chad, I'd love to see pictures of your Singer - which model is it?

It looks as though perhaps the R-5 was not supposed to have the backwards brush, but the earlier versions did...

The point of this feature, by the way, was to allow you to vacuum all the way to the edge of a rug, without the brushroll pulling it in to the nozzle!

Another cleaner to have this feature, aside from the Singer, Premier, and Apex, was the General Electric Model 111, styled by Allmon Fordyce:

Well the R5 certainly doesn't have the backwards brushroll. With the belt installed according to the diagram on the bottom of the cleaner, the brushroll spins forward like you'd expect it. If you try to hook it up to where it revolves backwards, the belt rides up on the pulley and rubs on the fan chamber!
