Hi,

Did Hoover come up with the Spirit line of canisters to replace their dome-shaped Celebrity line?

And didn't they come out with the Dimension in 1985 to compete with Eureka's Express line?

Hmmm???

Sounds about right Ben, I think the spirit was not only to replace the Celebrity but also to compete with the kenmore canister design, and are lighter/cheaper than the Celeb and compitition.
As for the Dimention I think that was also to compete with Kenmore/Eureka and serve as thier "high end' series.

The Electronic 1000

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
Ken,

Would you happen to know anything about Hoover's Electronic 1000 canister vac? AFAIK, this French import of a canister (in the U.K., it was known as the Sensotronic) was the predecessor to the Dimension line. The Dimension 1000 (which was U.S.-made) replaced the E1000 in 1985.

I know I wanted/want one lol..I know the U.K. version was the senortronic. The US version did replace the the E1000 IIRC also there was a few versions of the Demention.Demention 900, 1000,I belive Hoover also used the Supermacy name on it also. I don't know if this answers your question. I don't know much about it other than It was the first "electronic" controled vac that I remeber as a kid along with the Concept Two Electronic. and at 299.99 for the concept and 399.99 for the Dimention 1000(I think) I couldnt afford it on my 3$ a week allowance lol.

Supremacy Canisters

Ken,

Yes, the Supremacy versions of the Spirit/Dimension line did exist when Hoover brought out that series (which also included uprights based on the former Convertible/Decade line) to limited markets in the early 1990s.

Also, the U.K.-built Innovation (called the Turbomaster in its country of origin) was Hoover's second go at an electronically controlled upright vacuum, after the most-expensive U.S.-built upright model, the Concept Two Electronic.

Unfortunately, electronic vacuums never did sell that well due to (among other things) issues with the PCBs (printed circuit boards). And it seems as though there are no electronically-controlled vacs out there being made today, AFAIK.

No Electronically Controlled Vacs?

Are you nuts?! Have you not heard of Miele? Any vacuum with a variable speed motor has an electronic control!

Check out the higher end Miele S7's off the top of my head. They even have an automatic speed control to adjust the speed depending on the dirt level of the floors. The electronic control is alive and well.

I second that, there's countless electronically-controlled vacs out there, especially now we've got the technology to make the equipment smaller, cheaper, and (hopefully!) more reliable. As Eric says, there's Miele, and also Sebo - the X1 range have a computer so accurate it alters the height of the nozzle to compensate for brush-wear, as well as differentiating between different carpet heights.

Hoover's Turbomaster was pre-dated by the early 1980s original Sensotronic canister series, which had electronically-variable power, and a lamp which illuminated when the airflow was insufficient. I'm sure Rob and Paul can tell you more about those than I can!

I'd also add that comparatively poor sales of older cleaners with electronically-controlled functions would have been largely due to the fact that such features were often reserved for TOL models, often priced out of reach of many potential buyers.

Not Too Many (I Stand Corrected)

Sorry guys, I forgot about Miele; I was looking at this from a 100% U.S. perspective.

In America - here - it seems we've run out of luck with electronics in vacuums. But that could change in the next few years, after I'd seen a video news story on Riccar vacs being made here again.

There's a reason for that....

Most of the American companies outsourced long, long ago.

Some brands like Riccar actually DO have electronics in their vacuums. They don't actually control the speed of the motor, but they monitor the brushroll, heat, etc to shut the machine down and inform you of any failures or problems that may arise.

Even lowly power nozzles on some of the TriStar machines had a circuit board in them to shut down the PN if the brushroll jammed. The variable speed motor is more of a gimmick than anything else. That's the reason you don't see it much anymore. Most people either use high or low speed, and could care less about the in-between speeds.

Even currently, only the high end models from some manufacturers have electronic speed controls in them. Again......it's just another gimmick to make you feel better about spending obscene amounts of money on a machine that cleans no better than the simpler model!

It is, and always has been a marketing ploy. It has nothing to do with how well the vacuum cleans or how easy it is to operate. It's basically there to add "bling" and buttons to make it seem more "high end".
