Hi Everyone:

Since I've been asked how to make a new hose work on an 89 so many times I thought it would be easier to just do the whole process here in pictures rather than trying to keep explaining.

The Canadian Electrolux hoses after 1970 actually were made in such a way that they could be repaired (unlike their American counterparts). As such they are also pretty much interchangable. Any hose with the steel ring holding the end together will work for this (eg: 89, Ap / E series or 3500 upright)

Picture 1: Machine ends of the new donor hose and the original 89 hose.

Picture 2 - Clips holding metal rings in place - these have to be pushed in with a screw driver to allow the metal ring to slide off.

Picture 3 - Slide Metal rings back off the plastic (this may be difficult and require use of a screwdriver or lubrication to get them to move)

Picture 7 - 89 end put into new hose and wires put into guide channels (You may have to cut the plastic of the hose covering the wires a bit to allow more wire free in some cases)

Doug, thank you so much for sharing this with us. I always wondered how these hoses went together.

Yes thank you very much Doug! I'm going to try this as soon as I find a replacement vinyl hose. I think I have a 2nd lux 89 hose that I can use as the test so I won't screw up the current hose I am using.

Now if I could find a genuine green braided 80 series true electric hose to latex my life would be complete...so it's probably best I don't...still got a lot of livin' to do.

Doug, I am so grateful for the green clip & spiral hose cord - looks and performs great!

Well guys I followed Doug's instructions and made myself a new '89 hose It wasn't as easy as Doug makes it look however! It was very difficult to get the metal ring off both the new vinyl hose and the old '89 hose. I had purchased a brand new replacement vinyl hose with the plastic hose end connection just as in Doug's pics but when I removed the metal ring I discovered that it was all one piece and not 2 pieces that come apart. Consequently I had to break the plastic and in doing so found out that the the wires did not have a connector like in Doug's pic. I tried to solder the wires to the connectors from the old hose but that wouldn't work. So I ended up just wrapping the wire around the connector on the 89 machine end and wrapping electrical tape around the connection. I then put the hose back together as in Doug's instructions. Works great, looks great and there is noticeably more suction!

Sorry. I should have mentioned that most of the hoses you see on ebay being sold as Electrolux are NOT genuine Electrolux hoses and, as such, are not made in the same way. If the hose has a black switch on the handgrip steer clear. The actual Electrolux ones either have no switch or a trigger grip. The generic ones dont adapt well at all.

It is a lot harder to adapt the generic ones but on the other hand, it is a nice feature to have the on/off switch for the power nozzle on the handle. I do miss having the trigger switch from the '89 hose.

THANKS, Doug!

I would love to get my hands on a Canadian Elextrolux hose end.

I never see them on Ebay.

If anyone has one, please contact me.

Thanks.
