Ok - I'm game. This President belonged to my grandmother (moms side). Mom bought it for her shortly after she started work in 1946. Up till that time Grandma had never had one. She never replaced it either, using it about once a week till she went into a home in 1990. The fact that it still looks like new (Even the hose is still flexible) is testament to the way she treated her appliances. Doug |

This Goblin belonged to my other grandmother (dads side). It was purchaced in the mid 1940's to replace her hoover. (At the time my grandfather was caretaker of the courthouse here and they lived in the suit on the top floor) The hoover was rather useless as it was entirely hardwood floors where the goblin came with a felt pad for hardwood floors. It was augmented by a Regina electric broom in the early 60's (which I, unfortunately, no longer have) and was in use till grandma died in 1969. Doug |

And the final one that I can contribute. My moms Lewyt 97 which she bought in 1957 and used (and I grew up playing with) up till the time I replaced it with an Electrolux for her in the early 1980's. So those are the 3 family machines I have and, incidentally, the ones that started my collecting. Doug |

First, and the only family vac I have a picture of, is my Grandmother's (Mom's Mother) model 82 Constellation. Most of you have already heard the story of how my Grandfather bought it for her in 1955 for their Anniversary, their last before he passed away in Feb. 1956, just 4 1/2 months before I was born. She took excellent care of it, and after she moved in with us in 1965, she only used it to clean her own room, as Mom cleaned the rest of the house. It became mine after Grandma passed away and Mom moved from the house into an apartment. I also have a Westinghouse cannister that belonged to an Aunt of mine that I got when she and my Uncle went into assisted living. Then there's the model 966 Electro-Hygiene that I bought for my Mother when I was selling them in 1974, and also the 858 Constellation and Filter-Queen 350 that she bought at moving sales at the apartment complex she managed (and later lived in. And because they belonged to family members, they are a special part of my collection. Jeff |

was an Electrolux Z55, in faux croc skin effect!!! or so us kids where told...lovely & quiet, woven hose..it had a metal brush but my gran upgraded the floor brush with the pink / cream Z65 when it came out!!! The cord was a heavy flexible rubber with a slide in two prong bakelite plug...that was my job to plug & un-plug the cord..it was always wrapped around a nail hung on the wall of the pantry under the stairs...

The only genuine Family vacuum I have is this festively conglomerated 1967 Electrolux 89. It began life as a complete all green 89 with electric hose and PN. The telescopic wand and main body is all that remains original. I received it only this Christmas past as it was thought by Mom to be decades long gone. Brother Jim piped up at brunch to say he had it stored away in his basement. When Dad bought Mom her new vacuum (after I left home) he absconded it to the Garage Workshop. Over the years it clearly encountered mis-adventures and he, frugal man, replaced parts as they failed with whatever he could scrounge. I'm particularly impressed that he leak-proofed the beige hose in matching red plastic bags. The 'Banana Puce' PN200 from 1976-8 is another choice touch. Other than its bangs & bumps and 'Johnny Cash Cadillac One Piece At A Time' appearance it is clean and rust free inside and runs smooth, strong and quiet to this day. I have accumulated enough green parts, with the help of Pete and Doug Smith to re-build it all in green but as I have a third 89 that needs help most of those parts will be used in its resurrection. In Loving Memory of this 89's long Family Service I will eventually be 'restoring' it in Red and Green with a red cord and a latexed red saran weave hose from a red 86/88. Although the whereabouts of other relative's vacuums are unknown I have managed to find examples of Gramma Scheafe's (and Mom's) Filter Queen, Gramma Kerr's Hoover 281, Aunt Carol's Constellation, Aunt Jessie's Lewyt Big Wheel, Aunt Bernadette's Compact and Great Aunt Sophie's green GE Swiveltop. Vacuum Brand loyalty may not run strong in my Family but everyone of them drove General Motors almost exclusively - Cadillac, Pontiac, Chevy, Buicks or Oldsmobiles through the 1940s to 80s. Oh, those German/Scots roots... Dave |

I don't have my mother's original Kirby, because it was killed in a house fire. But I do still have the Omega that Kirby replaced it with under their Lifetime agreement to rebuild. It was not rebuildable, so it was replaced for $12.50. |

Well bugger me. After double double checking seems I got confused. It is indeed a 4002 Honey Beige/ Tangerine Freedom with 4006 Green housing. When we bought it the owners said it has never had a repair since they got married - they were easily late 50's/early 60s. It was a second hand wedding present so it must of been a reconditioned one. I still love it despite its hash of machines and at least mine is unique. The orange really compliments the green in its own clashy way. Wow in Shropshire eh and all these machines so close! Another shropshire member that you know of with all these minters you often refer to? Not so far from you. The freedom actually came from Market Drayton. Nice little place to go for a saturday morning drive on the hunt for vacs. R |

Bringing up an old but fun thread.
After my parents split up, Mum got rid of the Kirby after a few years as it was relegated to the shed by then and gathering dust. The Panasonic soldiered on until 2007 when Mum wanted to "upgrade" and I was given it and it's remained with me ever since. |

I actually grew up with Kirbys because my family passed down with Kirby machines, my moms first vac was a Bissell, She HATED it! She ended up getting her first Kirby, and it was a Gsix. 6 years later, A salesman knocks on our door with a Ultimate G Diamond Edition. She then bought it and put the poor Gsix in the basement. In late 2012, we had to move, so we moved to a store with a house connected to it. Her Kirby was completely worn out, like the fan was broke, bag, etc. Then, she just took the Gsix, and left it out for over 3 months! DURING WINTER. I took it inside and I have been cleaning it up ever since.
The End. |

I don't have it anymore, but I used to have my parents' tan and green Hoover Convertible. I gave it to Goodwill almost 20 years ago when I was moving.
I also used to have a late '70s orange Eureka Princess that was my grandmother's. I've told the story of its demise on this list before, so I won't bore you with it again. My dad bought me my Electrolux 1205 at a Goodwill store about 10 or 12 years ago. They never used it but they had one like it that dad rescued from a neighbor's trash pile when I was in high school. As his memory fades, he swears up and down that's the one I have. He doesn't remember buying mine at Goodwill. |

Well, just about a week ago, I finally completed mom's Gsix. I ended up having to take the whole thing apart and clean it with my G5. Long story short, I accidently tripped the Tech Drive Power Assist to full gear, because it was smashed in one place. Now, its basically a "Racer Kirby", I call it. The only reason I call it that because now it runs down the hallway at full speed. I just use it as a vac to clean out other vacuums. (I just use the hose with it)

I have 2 of my gramma's 5 vacuum sweepers. She may have had more, but i only wanted a certain 5. I almost got number 3 (Electrolux), until it was mistakenly thrown out. Number 4 is coming next year when my cousin is done with it at college. I go the Hoover Poewrdrive and the Kenmore Progressive 300. The last one was thrown out when I was 3, i think it was a kenmore whispertone upright.

Well this is a lonnng over due story to tell time ... My grand mother had a compact c8 i think it was blue had daysy's on the side and i tought that was the holly grail of vacuum cleaners when i was a kid.I have used that particular vacuum cleaner so many times that i care to count . Now i have my own CompactC9 canister vacuum that i have restored and use every single day as my daylly driver primary vacuum . That good old compact was used for yearss in a home whit 7 childrend so it had it share of used and scrape but performe flawlessly throught out the years last i heard the blue c8 is used at the trailler to this day bought new by my uncle who sold em way back its stil retain its charms and all the original pieces a true one owner haha . So i tryed and tryed again to have the compact when she had a central vacuum put it but to no avail so i got my very own compact interstate electra c9 canister vacuum by iec whit all the original peices and made it my one owner. To this day my compact rest in a beige plastic chest when not in used stored away from any thing that could fall onto it i treat like like my rolls royce the compact is what got me into vacuum cleaners . Cant Beat A COMPACT ELECTRA IEC C9 CANISTER VACUUM WHIT CYCLONINC ACTION AND COMPACT TURBO BRUSH :) i hope you enjoyed my story yall have a good day :)
