... its rush hour, so i figure i can walk a bit after my meal, and let the traffic (hopefully) die down a bit. Why not go to the Goodwill store across the shopping center. This store is usually a dud...

Hmm, whats this? (hand cleaner was MIA at first)

Ugh... another boring Concept Two (walking toward machine, eyes straining across the store to see if i can spot anything different about this model) Its not power-drive, thats a plus!... (frowning over missing hand cleaner)

OMG, it cant be! Not in south Texas! Can this be the non-drive Concept Two ive wanted for a while now? And to top it off... ITS ELECTRONIC!

My mind is blown! All the speeds work! Finally a Quiet Concept! L@@K! (already thinking how im going to start a thread begging for a replacement hand cleaner)

Should i get rid of that handle sticker, guys?

Post# 60437 , Reply# 5   2/14/2009 at 04:46 (5,521 days old) by swingette ()

So im walking around the store with my barren Concept Two when, in a different isle, there it is! It had that black cord, and had its own price tag. 3.99 for the hand cleaner, Concept was 6.99.

It looked like it would match, so without knowing if it would "go", i mounted the Help Mate onto the front of the upright and it clicked right in. In a flash i snatched the black cord off the hand cleaner and threw it into the uprights bag.

Does that make me a thief? A bad person? How many of you would do the same?? (lol)

Could the hand cleaner simply been separated from the upright before pricing? It had its own cord, but seems like too wild of a coincidence?

Here she is all put together and looking pretty. (she better look good, i have dishpan hands from all the scrubbing!)

Thanks for watching!

WOW!

That's fabulous!

I knew it existed, but have never actually seen one of the Electronic Concept Twos that wasn't power driven.
That's the one that I would want, too.

Nope, the hand vac thing definitely doesn't make you a thief. It belongs to that machine... period.
I would have done the same thing... And now you have an extra cord.

Personally, I would take off the sticker.

Thanks for sharing! Oh, how much did you have to pay for it?

I might have an instruction manual for it... but it would be back in Milwaukee. I'll tuck it in the back of my mind to look for it next time I'm there.

My Concept 2

Hi, Brett. I never knew there was any Concept that wasn't power-driven. On my copper colored machine I always disengage the power-drive until the bag starts getting fuller. Vacuuming is GOOD exercise.....Bill in Az.....

Thief! Not!!

I once put a bunch of misc. Hoover tools inside a Kenmore canister and bought the canister. Well they were just laying there not priced and not with a vacuum. I considered it a rescue from the dumpster therefor ridding me of any guilt! We all have these stories LOL!

When I got my Dirt Devil hand vac, it was like $6.99, I saw a loose $1.99 sticker, so yeah...That thrift store cheated me once so I didn't feel too bad. ;)

Great Find, I thought that all Concept II's had Power Drive. i used to have a non-powerdrive Concept I and knew a few people who had the same thing, I like them better than ones with power drive.

As for taking the Help-Mate and cord, I have done the same thing before and would do it again, 1st they belong together, and 2nd if you(the checker) are too lazy to see they are priced seperatly or if you ask me what the price is you deserve to not get the right amount. When I went to North Canton to meet Norm Brown while at the good will store I bought some opened packages of Type C bags and I shoved a whole bunch of loose unpackaged bags I could use into the packages(i figured no one will buy a loos bag so I was saving them from being wasted)

thanks for the comments, guys.

I too had no idea that non-drive Concept IIs were made, until recently. When i saw the literature for the non-drive Electronic i was surprised again, since the Electronic was TOLish. It soo quiet, and easy to push, on lower speeds.

Goodwill in SA has a habit of applying multiple price stickers to each item, so it wasnt unusual for the hand cleaner to have a sticker and the upright to have a sticker. All i had to do was show the Concepts handle to the checker when it was time to pay, LOL. I would truly be surprised if those really did come separate. Whoever donated them probably got an extra cord for convenience. Paid 6.99 plus tax for everything.

Now all i need is a replacement filter for the HM. I believe Hoover issued an improved filter for these?

btw, i wouldnt be surprised if the checkers at GW could get in trouble for NOT asking for ID. GW hires lots of hard-to-place individuals here. They are watched very closely.

I Am SOOOO Jealous!!! lol I would love to find the non propelled model. I have the propelled one but without the hand vac. Anybody have a grey one for sale??? I also have the orange and brown Concept two. How many non self propelled Concept twos were there?

Really an oddity. You would think they would offer only low-end Concept 1's in a non power-drive version. I'd love to find a complete Concept II electronic WITH power drive! Without I thought was unheard of. Just out of curiosity wouldn't it be better to leave the sticker on the handle, being that's how it left the factory?

Well here are at least two, Phil. Let us know if you find your HM. I see them every now and then, but i dont know if they all have removable cords and are compatible with Concepts.

I'm on the fence about the sticker, Karl. I just realized that all three Concepts I have/had had the handle sticker still on. I've never taken them off. They do look ugly, but i can't bring myself to remove them.

I also have...

A PowerMax... which has the variable speed control. This, of course, is what replaced the Concept 1 and Concept 2 in maybe 1991 or 1992.

The black one was TOL... they only came as self propelled, and they all had tools. I may take the hose off of mine at some point, but if I take the hose off, the tools will still live on board... and that won't make much sense.

It's a model U3745-910, manufactured in July of 1992.

Sorry for the kind of grainy picture...

Another...

Speed control.

..there's also a "power surge" button built into the on/off switch.

Hoover PowerMax

I too have a PowerMax, mine is the maroon colored one. The front of the hood is badly banged up. I got it as a trade-in, but didn't have the heart to throw it away. Do you think I might still be able to find a replacement hood somewhere? Interesting how the variable speed rheostat stayed, but without the LED's. I'm sure this way it was alot less problematic. Still, I'd love to have a Concept II electronic. I'll have to dig out my 1984 Consumer's catalog, I'm pretty sure it's in there.

Yes, while they do work well, even with the bearings greased, they are a noisy machine. That's another advantage the Dial-A-Matic had over the Concept series. For Hoover, it was definitely a step back, reverting to a dirty-air system. It's a shame Hoover sold the patent rights to Panasonic. I would have loved to see a Dial-A-Matic II!
