Mike:

I don't usually say this, but eBay is probably a good way to go on a TriStar. If there are many missing parts, a thrift-store TriStar will cost as much to restore as the ones on eBay go for. The floor tool alone goes for over $90. You can find reasonably complete machines on eBay for $300 - $400, and making an average-condition machine complete again can cost that much. Ask me how I know...

Hey Mike!! I may be listing a maroon 2-speed Tri-Star here on the forum soon. It has all the tools except the dusting brush and crevice tool, although I may have a crevice tool rounded up for it. I'll keep you posted. Later, Trg

Tri-Stars

Hey, Mike, This is Nathan, Electrolux-Dude. I believe I can help you. I've got several of the maroon colored Tri-Stars, also I have some Gold colored Compacts. I also have some powerheads, and attachments out in my garage, where I keep all of my 200 plus vacuum cleaners! I would be glad to put something together for you and make you a good deal on a Tri-Star or a Compact. I try to sell my stuff for a little less than e-bay. I will be glad to go through and service the motor on a Tri-Star and clean it and check it to make sure everything is working properly. A lot of times all they need is to be cleaned. I'm sure I can find one that will work for you. I go out to my vacuum cleaner house every weekend, and will be happy to service a machine for you. Just ask Sandy--He'll give me a good reference. If I can be of help, let me know!

Sincerely,
Nathan L. Thomas
Electrolux-Dude

Yep, Nathan's a Good Guy:

Nathan (Electrolux-Dude) has sold me three machines - two Luxes and my TriStar. All three experiences have been more than satisfactory.

Nathan is right about TriStar motors often suffering from dirt and needing a cleaning; on all of the machines he's sold me, he has gone through the motors and put things right. You know how bad most people are about taking care of vacuums! If you want to have a trouble-free TriStar, it is essential to keep up with the filtering system, to keep dirt out of your motor. TriStars have a quadruple filtration system, and three of the four filters affect the motor.

The first filter is the cloth bag. TriStar's instruction manual says you can use the cloth bag by itself, without the next filter, which is a paper bag that fits inside the cloth one. I personally do not recommend that practise; paper bags are a lot cheaper than motors.

The third filter is a motor filter that fits over the motor housing. It is plastic, with a foam filtering element. It is washable, so keeping it clean is easy.

The fourth filter is an afterfilter than fits over the exhaust. There are two different afterfilters available - the standard one, which is just a little foam element inside a plastic cap, or the Filter-Fresh afterfilter, which is a huge, mushroom-shaped filter that replaces the standard afterfilter. I personally use the standard afterfilter; the standard filtration system is so good with the paper bag in place that I have never found the need to use a Filter-Fresh. But then, I don't have any serious allergies. When I vacuum with the TriStar, I don't see any dust again for a day or two. With a Lux, dust is visible again within a couple-three hours.

Nathan ships promptly, and he stands behind his work, so I do recommend him.

Tri-Star

Hi Mike. You will LOVE the TS when you get it. Thrift stores are awesome. One day on my home from work I stopped at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store and found a new in the box TS. I really thought I was having a horrible low blood sugar reaction. ( Im type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump) I got it for $50.00. You cannot tell its full unless you shine a flashlight into the hose opening because it NEVER loses any suction. Mine is from the 90's and its a bullet color. Built like a TANK. Ebay is a really good source. Let us know what you find......Bill in Az.....

To Mike

Hey, Mike--That sounds good. I will be going out to my "Vacuum House" this weekend and I'll put something together. I'll let you have a complete machine, if I can find all the attachments to make it complete, for $175 including shipping. I'll go through the motors and take pictures of it, I should have it ready to go by the first of next week.

Mike:

When your TriStar comes, do yourself a favour. Go to the TriStar Canada website (www.tristarvacuumscanada.com...) and use the "Order Parts" link to get to the pages that have parts diagrammes for the EX-20. Download the diagrammes and print them out. This will allow you to verify that all the parts in your machine are there. The TriStar power nozzle is made with some dust seals and washers that are often missing in used machines; people will change a belt or something and they don't put everything back together the way they should. There are two little nylon spacers on the shafts of the brushroll that are usually missing, and there are two felt washers that are dust seals for the brushroll bearings that are usually not replaced properly. There is also a foam dust seal for the motor that is usually missing, and another one on the sole plate that is usually dried out and not doing its job. All these parts keep the brushroll and the sole plate from rattling and vibrating.

If you find anything missing when you compare the parts diagramme to your machine, replacing any missing parts will make a huge difference in how well your machine works and how quiet it is. A TriStar should have an "expensive", well-behaved yet powerful sound, with no rattles or screeching coming from the power nozzle. It's the difference between a well-maintained BMW and an old one that hasn't been taken care of.

Congratulations on getting a fine, fine machine. Please show us pics when it arrives!

When I get it. I'll take pictures of it before and after.I always like doing a once over on any vacuums that I get. You never know what might be missing or broken till Ya take it apart and examine everything.(even though they say it runs strong or like new) Thanks again,
Mike
