Has anyone seen the new Sanitaire light weight vacuum?
Duralite
can't match it up to anything I have seen before. Could it be a completely brand new design?

It looks a bit like the Eureka Electrolux upright that came out a few years ago.

From what I've heard it's based off the Eureka Ultra design of the late 80's...if you remember that had an all plastic chassis, no height adjustment, ESP motor and metal Vibra Groomer II brushroll.

Good cleaner, but even when the handles weren't breaking, they felt really flimsy. You can feel the head "bounce" as you picked the machine up. The Duralite supposedly is taking all the components that were failure-prone on the Ultra, and making them out of magnesium.

I'm eager to see one in person.

Can you copy and paste the article, Methodist? I think one has to have a logon to view your link?

Here It Is

Don't know what happened there! The article is from the VDTA site dated October 2008.

Sanitaire introduces DuraLite® lightweight upright

Sanitaire recently launched a whole new commercial breed of vacuum cleaners. Called the DuraLite®, this upright vacuum was designed and engineered at Electrolux Home Care Product headquarters in Bloomington, IL, by Sanitaire’s expert R&D team.

“We developed the DuraLite because our distributors and end users told us they needed a truly lightweight cleaner that could deliver powerful, deep cleaning day in and day out,” said Brad Hoare, general manager of Eureka and Commercial Brands. “Our R&D team responded with an innovative lightweight machine that is so powerful and effective, it exceeded our expectations. We have tested the DuraLite under the most grueling conditions and are proud to say it performs and performs without skipping a beat.”

Hoare said the DuraLite weighs in at a scant 10 pounds, thanks to the liberal use of magnesium in the construction of its critical parts.

“Magnesium is 33 percent lighter than aluminum,” he said, “yet it has the strength and stability properties of steel. We are using magnesium for the most critical parts of the DuraLite cleaner, such as the large yoke across the center, the bottom plate and foot pedal -- three items that tend to take the most abuse and wear out first. Others in the industry may use plastic for these high wear parts but our engineers found a way to take out the weight while adding durability.”

Speaking of competitors, Hoare noted that the DuraLite vacuum cleans 30 percent better than the leading commercial upright. The secret lies under the sleek red magnesium frame of this workhorse: it has a more powerful commercial grade motor, and a wider air path to eliminate clogging.

This extra-large, clog-resistant air-path is one of the largest in the industry and is nearly three times bigger than the orifice in the leading commercial lightweight. An added benefit of the larger air path is that the easier dirt and debris can be removed, the less strain is placed on the motor, delivering even more durability and less down time.

The DuraLite also has a wider cleaning head for a faster finish and large rubber-coated wheels to add durability and operating ease on carpet or bare floors. The cleaner features quick-change bag access via dual zippers which exposes the whole bag. This allows the user to remove the bag easily no matter how full it is. And replacing the new bag is done just as quickly and easily.

According to Hoare, the features of the DuraLite vacuum reflect the needs of commercial users and the demanding environments they are challenged with keeping clean. One of those features is that it’s simple and easy to change the belt.

“Based on end user research, we learned that housekeepers cannot and will not use a screwdriver to change a belt,” Hoare explained. “On the DuraLite, there’s one latch which exposes the entire belt. All you need to do is take the belt off, take the brush out, put the brush back on, put the belt back on and you’re ready to go.”

Another DuraLite feature commercial users will appreciate is its unique plug which permits the use of a much lighter 18 gauge two-wire cord. If the cord is ever damaged, the plug can be replaced easily and quickly -- it just pops in place. The DuraLite comes with a 30-foot cord.

The DuraLite utilizes a larger pancake-style fan, which conserves motor rpm’s as it reduces wear on bearings and other parts and prevents the common high speed whining sound found on some competitive models. This helps the DuraLite save energy use and, at the same time, lowers operating noise.

The DuraLite joins 10 other Sanitaire vacuum cleaners that are part of the Green Cleaning Line, a collection offering superior cleaning power and has passed stringent CRI Green Label™ testing for soil removal, dust containment and carpet appearance retention. The Sanitaire Green Cleaning Line is designed to provide commercial environments with “cleaner indoor air through higher levels of filtration to achieve a positive environmental benefit,” according to Hoare.

A member of the Electrolux Home Care Products family since 1974, Sanitaire has earned the reputation as an industry leader.

The current line of Sanitaire vacuum cleaners includes uprights, canisters, back-packs, wet/dry vacuums, industrial carpet cleaners, air movers and accessories. Every product is backed by a network of more than 1,500 warranty service centers throughout the United States.

I think it looks great... I'd love to try one out. Oh well... maybe when they become vintage! Where's the switch?
