Does anyone know if Electrolux made these? Were they any good at grooming? I notice on the back where the push button on/off, there is a button that says "push"...what's that for?

Was it a clean air machine, or fan first?

If I'm not mistaken...

this would have been Electrolux's first Upright. Around 1980-82????Maybe. The were clean air, had two motors. One the suction motor, and a second smaller motor for the brush roll. I think they were trouble some as they clogged easily, the path the dirt/dust had to make was quite involved within the bag cover and bag chamber. They were convertible, and tools and hose were available for it. Others that would know more will chime in I hope.

In fact,

It clogged so readily that a stick came with it to unclog it. It has been a very long time since I have even seen one of these!

Indeed this was lux's first attempt at an upright vac.
first ones were out about 82, very good suction, groomed carpets well, butt......they were very heavy and rather awkward to vacuum around furniture with. They only had one motor. Think Hoover DAM design,, Only this lux had a clutch assembly on the belt side for the brush to protect the motor.
There were tools available also, they connected at the top of the bag housing, you had to open the bag compartment door and insert an adapter and attach the hose to that, the tool kit also came with a plastic plate to put under the machine over the brush roll to protect your carpets from the brush if you forgot to raise the height selector all the way up.
The button on the back that says PUSH is the handle release.

These were clean air vacs, dirt went directly to the bag through a rather small hose and into small duct up the back of the vac and into the top of the bag door, across and dropped down into the large bag. However this vac did have a tendency to clog which is why it came with a clean out rod built in to the back of the main vac body.

But these really were built very well, which is why they r still running today.
Bags are still available for them too

I have one of these. I'll have to see if that clean out rod is still on the back. I would love to have the attachment converter though. I think it's fair to say that these uprights were sold as a viable alternative to a customer who refuses to use a tank cleaner, so Lux would not miss out on that share of the market. Even with its plastic body, it's still heavy and somewhat clunky to use. IMHO, Electrolux's uprights were always "just okay" in terms of performance, and this is certainly no exception. When I worked at CVS we used the commercial ProLux upright, which clogged constantly. I hated it! I'd use a Super J over this any day of the week....

That's interesting....

Did Electrolux later change the design to include a separate motor? I was sure this model had two, but again, I'm not real familiar with this machine. I had a manual for it once, but I have no idea what I did with it. I was (attempting) to sell for Lux at the time this model came out - we didn't push them.

Rick,

The two motor models came later. This one, (we are discussing from the pic), matched the Olympia. Then next matched the J/Gold J.

As mentioned, they were very bulky and heavy and LOUD! I bought one about 4 years ago, new in the box, never used, on ebay and still have it.

It is unique in that the height adjuster adjusts all four wheels making it very effective for correct height.

IMHO, it is a fair performer. The bag is way too long so when it is about 1/3 to 1/2 full, there is quite a bit of reduced suction. The attachments were bulky too.

The later twin motor uprights, (think Discovery), were much lighter, easier to maneuver, quieter and had a better bag design. The twin motors also made them much more effective cleaners.

Bertha

Ask any old electrolux sales person and they will tell you about these machines........they were called Bertha for good reason. Very Heavy! Aerus stopped making bags for them a few years ago but you can still get them from DVC. If you decide to get it let me know and I can send you the Service manual and I have a couple boxes of original attachments and a manual or two if you want them.

Dirtfinder1,

I WOULD love to have a set of the attachments if you have more than one! I will be happy to pay you for them. I've been trying to find a set for a long time.

I did manage to get several packs of original Lux bags for mine. I'm sure there will some left over by the time I'm gone and it will still be running!

Please email me if you can help. Thanks,
Charlie

Well thank you..

very much for the offer David...but I think judging from what I'm reading here, I will leave this auction alone. Clunky and bulky would not go well in my little house!

LUX Europe.

Si,

The earliest Lux uprights I can say I know of were late 1960's in Europe. The model 150. The US had an upright branded Regine which was similar, and eaurope saw various incarnations including Philips.

These were dirty air machines. Narrow cleaning path (slightly smaller than that of the Hoover Juniors). A little noisy but quite sturdy and for the most part reliable.

An ugly duckling of a machine which must have sold on its name, and its performance as it lasted into the very early eighties IIRC with the 170 series machines.

Hope this clarifies things a little!

Clark.

Lux Uprights

Nothing new in the UK! This is an Electrolux 170. It belongs to Mike King. It was very similar to the Eureka Power Brush-N-Beat, and was also the basis for the Philips Carpeteer, the PYE Stratovac, and the General Electric Genie, as well as machines by Nilco and Fakir.
