I just came back from 5 days in Toronto and whilst perusing around the Bay dept store vacuum department I saw they had two Metropolitan vacuum cleaners on clearance. The larger model for $239 and the smaller more compact though similar model without the power nozzle for $139. I was sorely tempted to buy one but didn't. Anyone else have one.. They're very nice, very retro, nearly total metal, cylinder type, made in the USA.
I'm thinking now that I'm home I should have just bought it darn.

Metropolitan Lux refurbs

I don't think they've offered them for some time now, but for years Metropolitan refurbished Electroluxes to sell through department stores and independent vac shops. They would supply their own tools. IIRC, you could get a nicely refurbished Lux XXX into the late '70's.

I know at one point

JCPenny had them in their catalog, i have not gotten their Christmas catalog yet, as that is where they usually are, at least that is where i have seen them.

They're certainly nice in their simplicity like the original cylinder type vacs. No ornamentation whatsoever, just a rolled tube of steel with the end cap and two latches, and hose insert port. Each set of wheels are just bolted onto a front and back bent piece of steel. Nothing fancy at all but they do look sharp.

Pete,
Yes, metrovac is still producing new units. Go to www.metrovacworld.com... From what I gather, their pro series (stainless steel) is the most powerful of the bunch. From what I've seen, The Bay is carrying the pro series. I have the compact version without the power nozzle. I've rigged up an adapter so that I can use either my lux or lindhaus powerhead with it. They are a simple, reliable unit. Function over fashion, although the stainless steel does look neat, not to mention the compact version looks like a big thermos bottle! If you give the compact version a quick pull, sometimes the front end will lift off the ground, nothing like doing a wheelee in you living room. The complaint that I have about them is that they cheaped out on the power cord, only using an 18 gauge. 18 gauge is rated upto 10 amps, 16 is rated upto 13 amps. When you look at their spec sheet, the non-power head is stamped 11 amps, (that's probably the most it will pull, but under working conditions it probably use between 9-10 amps), their powerhead version shows 13 amps, a little much for an 18 gauge cord. The only other thing that I've noticed between the full size and compact, is that the full size has two stationary wheels at the front, the compact has one swivel wheel (caster) at the front. For the price they were selling it for, I'd buy them.

Are these loud vacuums?

They look great, but I have a problem with noisy machines. I had to get rid of a new royal upright because of this.

Decade_800,

I also remember seeing those in the JCPENNEY catalog. I recieved the Christmas catalog and it is a lot smaller this year than usual and there are no Metropolitan vacuums in it this year.
