Wow I had a great morning when I found this beautiful Electrolux System 90 vac at a local store. Not only does it have the big L power head but it also came with the ever so handy SideKick mini power nozzle. And I think the original saran weave hose with the pistol grip power switch working AND a replacement vinyl hose with a tiny toggle slider switch to to run the power nozzle. Also the big power nozzle has a brushroll on/off switch, first time I've seen that on an Electrolux.
It runs great there's a green power light and a light for the full bag and a light for a clogged or missing aft filter I think and another light for something else I'm not sure of yet. There was no price, she said name your price, $5 $10 whatever so since it was a charity I gave them $20

Here's the little switch on the handgrip of the vinyl hose to turn the power nozzle on/off. Neat but not as nice as the pistol grip I think.

The only thing is, is that it's definitely not as silent as the old Canadian Electroluxes like the 89 and 88's etc.. but it's not noisy either.

Again my faltering memory but I'm upstairs in the bedroom and see that I have an Electrolux (Canada) E2000 (1982-85) machine I found not all that long ago. It appears almost identical to this System 90 (1987-1989) machine so I put them together for a comparison. The System 90 says on the inside of the lid where all the info is that it's a model E2100 System 90. The only differences I can see other than the color is in the lid. The E2000 has a little air nipple thing in the lid that fits into a hole on the body near the top of the bag. I'm guessing this is something to do with the bag full indicator system to shut the machine off etc. There isn't one one the System 90 but the machine has the same dial on top for adjusting the shut-off? A Puzzlement

Here's the two side by side

And the inside shot. Note on the right machine the E2000 has that black thing for the air near the latch above the letters EL and the System 90 on the left doesn't. It doesn't appear to have anything.

I'm also wondering why this machine was made in the USA, the next version out per Dougs website were made in Canada once again as were all the previous.

OK - here are the explainations.

The E2000 and early 2100 (Jadestone trim) were the last machines made in the Canadian plant. When the free trade agreement came into effect Electrolux closed the Canadian Plants, fired all the staff, and moved production to the US. After the System 90 we got stuck with the Grand Marquis and Legacy which did NOT go over well in Canada at all. Sales went way down which finally prompted the creation of the Diplomat series - based on the 2100. This was when we lost most of the records of the stuff that was done here. One of the bosses tried to get some of the stuff for me but was told it had to be destroyed (Thank you Elux US)

Incidentally the trim colour on the System 90 was called Taupe.

The E2000 actually had a smaller motor (but better built) than the 2100 series. The Black thing you refer to on the cover of the E2000 is indeed for the bag controll valve. You will also note the contact block on the lower part of the cover. There were replaced by a more reliable direct connect system on the 2100 which runs through the center of the new style hinge on the door.

I should also note that the last of the E2000's had the tool clip on the top of the exhaust cover and a dual dusting brush instead of separate dusting and small nozzles. As well as using the new direct connect system.

There were actually 8 machines in the E series the E2000, E Special, 2100 (Jadestone ) the LE (Jadestone), the System 90 (Taupe), LE (Taupe), 2100 Special Edition (wine) and LE Special Edition (wine)

I just found a 93 Consumers Distr catalog which featured a lineup of Singer canisters and oddly they were calling theirs System 90 as well.. Wonder if there was any challenges to that

It looks to me that the Canadian System 90 was the counterpart to the American Marquise (at least in terms of color scheme--taupe and mauve (top of System 90 only) were definitely '80s colors, power nozzle, and years of manufacture):
