Our secretary is my NEW BEST FRIEND! I brought in the motor for my Classic Omega to replace the bearings (we have a bearing puller in our shop) a while back, and she asked what I was doing with it. Of course I told her I was restoring the vac. I also casually mentioned in passing conversation that I'm starting to collect/restore older vacs since it was something I always wanted to do.

Long story short, her mother operates a church resale shop here in town. Yesterday she said someone brought in an "old-looking" cylinder cleaner and wondered if I wanted it before they put it on display. Being selfish as I am, I said sure! Flash-forward to today, and in she walks with an Electrolux Automatic-E! Even has the attachments! Only problem is that it has no hose :-(

What is the proper hose for this machine? Where can you even GET one anymore?

I'll have to say, this is my first Electrolux, and it won't be my last.....it's so quiet!!! Has reasonably strong suction, but nothing like the TriStar or the Kirby (IMO anyway) Then again, it's hard to judge without a hose!

Electrolux E-Automatic Hose

is gray woven saran [vinyl] with dark blue tracing. It has a suction relief valve on the handle end with a silver plastic sliding cover over the valve.

You can see photos of the original hose at the link below (scroll down to the E-Automatic section). Good luck finding an original! However, any of the non-electric Electrolux hoses until the 1993 Renaissance will fit the E-Automatic.

A good replacement hose is a coiled silver upright Royal hose fitted with Electrolux ends. It's a perfect match for the silver trim on the machine. See [showing the Model E]:

EMI Suppression Capacitor.

I've yanked this machine apart to clean it out (smells like mothballs) and the EMI suppression capacitor on the back of the motor has apparently swollen and exploded at some point! Anyone know of a source for a replacement, or is it better just to cut it out of the circuit and forget it was ever there?

A picture of what I'm trying to describe is pasted below: (and yes, someone previously vacuumed without a bag apparently!)

Charles's Model E

You posted before I could finish my reply! BEAUTIFUL machine Charles! I'm jealous! Mine's in what I'd call "good" condition, but not excellent. With some cleaning, it should look great! I doubt I'll find an original hose, and I'll probably wind up using a replacement.

I think the cause of the whimpy suction on this machine was due to the huge quantities of fluff clogging up the static vanes in the 2-stage fan! Only about 2 air passageways were clear!

I'm sold on Electrolux....

I'm totally sold on Electrolux now. I've never had one before, but after fixing up the motor in this one, I'm impressed! After cleaning all the fluff out, repacking the bearings with high-quality grease, and fixing a broken motor mount, this thing has about the same suction as a shop vac! But with almost no noise?! No wonder people collect these things! I can't wait to get a hose and try this guy out....

Eliminating the "radio interference filter" will not harm anything, but if you are listening to AM radio the sound of the motor will come through on some channels -- to me, that's a good thing not a bad one, haha!

I got sold on them the same way. They're one of the few canisters I actually really like. So well built and quiet. Granted mine are mostly Canadian ones but I got my first American model G (rebuilt) at the convention last month. I've still got it out ready for use in the livingroom, the novelty hasn't worn off yet, it's so nice.

Electrolux

I love my Electrolux Olympia, I got it at a flea market for $7.00 or $10.00 it had the power nozzle included. The hose was bad so I got one off of eBay. It also had a bad power switch. I took it to a local repairman he cleaned and oiled and replaced the switch for $30.00. Best vacuum I've ever owned besides my Kirby. I would like to have another to use upstairs.

James

Does anyone listen to AM radio anymore other than you CRL LOL

AM Radio

My thoughts precisely! I mean it was a nice touch for them to include it back when Dinosaurs walked the earth, but come on....nobody else's machines had it, so do we REALLY need it today? I clipped mine off the terminal leads when I reassembled it from greasing the bearings and fixing that broken motor mount.

Well, there are people who still listen to AM -- there are a number of nationwide talk radio stations that some people tune in to.

True......although out here in the sticks we usually just tune into an internet stream of whatever we want to listen to. Higher fidelity too! That and our metal building at work is a virtual "black hole" for any sort of radio signal......even cell phones (which is a GOOD thing when you're at work!)

Hey,

I still listen to AM radio. On Saturday AAfternoons there are 2 Polka programs on that I listen to, and on sundays from 12:00PM-1:00 PM I listen to the Croatian Hour so I can listen to the Tamburitzans. Which is some of the most beautiful music.
By the way I am not 22 going on 80 Being Croatian it just comes with that I guess.
I also tuen in to a Country station on AM that plays old country music because I am a big fan of George Jones, Loretta Lynn, and most of all Patsy Cline.

AM Radio!

Yes, there are stations, esp talk radio which are interesting and/or informative, DR 'L' notwithstanding! And there is always the 'No Spin Zone' on AM as well!!! :)

Hey Hoover28, did the E hose you found have a hammertone blue machine-end coupler?

Would love to see photos of your find!!

I remove those resisters when rebuilding

I have heard those tend to short out,so i was told by a electrolux service person to remove them.

Photos

The hose came in today (aftermarket hose sadly.....not the original hose) so I took some pictures of my AE. It's certainly not "Museum quality" but it looks good anyway. Here's a question for Charles since he seems to know more about these than I do......Why would mine have a white cord and white wheels? I know on your site you show blue wheels and a black cord. I'm curious because a while back there was one on ebay with mismatched tools that had the same color scheme (certainly NOT the same machine). Is it possible this is the result of a rebuild at some point? Or could it be from the end of the run when they were transferring to the Automatic F and they just used parts from one on the other? Now I'm curious!!!!

Without further ado, here's some pictures:

This last one shows THE ONLY dent in the machine...

I figured they were probably replacements. The cord is genuine electrolux though.....even has the brand molded into the plug ends. I don't really care one way or another.....the color matches the hose at least!

Post# 51393 , Reply# 22   9/14/2008 at 01:52 (5,696 days old) by charles~richard ()

Hi, that's a nice specimen! Yes, the wheels and cord are later replacements - the original cord was always black with a generic Belden end, and the wheels were dark blue.

You mentioned it only has "so-so" suction. I wonder why that is. These models are quite powerful when running properly, especially with a completely sealed hose as you have there. When you shut it down there's some rumble in the motor so I wonder if the suction fans might be clogged up and thus full suction might be impeded. It should have really good suction.

Also, while it does not sound like there is one, you should open the rear cover and see if there is a filter pad in there. If so, remove it. You can save it if you want to, but don't leave in in there. It only restricts air flow and if you use the machine long enough, the motor will heat up.

Thanks for the pix and video! I thoroughly enjoyed all!

Thanks for the comments!

I completely took this machine apart. The fans were horribly clogged with lint and other awful unknown debris which I cleaned out. The bearings had grease that was more akin to glue, so the bearings were cleaned out and repacked. The brushes on the motor were worn down to about 1/4", so they were pulled and replaced. And finally I fixed that busted motor mount with a couple of pop rivets.

The fans were clogged causing pretty pathetic suction, but the real kicker was the broken motor mount. Every time you'd put your hand over the end of the machine, the motor would suck inward through it's seal and cause a total loss of suction! That was the original cause of the pathetic performance. There is no after-filter....I didn't get it with one. I would have removed it if it was there anyway after having read Charles' page on the AE.

There is a rumble on shutdown......it's actually not the bearing....it's the end of the rivet vibrating against the motor housing. The brushes are also not fully seated on the commutator yet, so there's a slight whine on startup and shutdown. The commutator is pretty worn, so it may take some use before they fully seat!

In all I really like this machine.....it's sleek, quiet, has "ok" suction, but certainly not powerful. Keep in mind I've been using a TriStar for a while....I've been spoiled by POWERFUL suction!
