I have had the Discovery II, grey Epic 3500 just like filterqueen83, and the Lux 3000. The 3000 had the best suction of the three. It did feel a little less substantial than the previous machines but it cleaned much better. I believe that the motor was changed to a larger size on the 3000 and later models, along with a better designed, more effective, brush roll. The Discovery II is one of those vac that I associate with my childhood and I love it. These machines are very well designed, clean well enough for most people, and are soo easy to use. They will also last for a very long time if cared for properly. Plus, their bag design is just like a Lux tank and extremely easy to change. I think they are simple looking yet elegant and the ability to use the electric sidekick is awesome!

The Epic 3500 is a fantastic machine. Those uprights clean up really well, even if they are a mess when you get them. That generation of Luxes use inexpensive after-filters that catch the motor dust but don't cost much. Yours has one installed; I can see it on the frontal photo. It's probably dirty but can be replaced. You'll see two tabs on the top that, when pulled, release the front plate that contains the filter. That is disposable, and the new one snaps on. Don't try to pull the other part off. It's glued to the machine. Replacing that filter might improve the airflow, too. I always thought the Epic uprights could benefit from more suction, but I think they clean really well as long as the bag isn't too full. Also, aside from being too top-heavy, the attachment configuration is the best of any upright because it allows you to use the electric Sidekick. Simplicity/Riccar has a really good extension hose, but it's straight suction. On the Epic, you can buy an Electrolux floor brush and use it like a canister on wood floors or the ceramic tile in your photos - it already has both extension wands. You're going to love this machine! Congratulations! patrick |
