Hi, I am in the process of restoring my Scott & Fetzer Sanitation system and I have got it broken down to the fan. I can't seem to figure out how to get the fan off. It is different from the later Kirby's as there isn't a shaft sticking out from the fan for the belt to go over. Instead, there is a nut right in front of the fan that comes off with a socket wrench. So now what do I do? I don't see a hole in the armature shaft inside like I the later Kirby's had so I'm not sure if the fan itself is threaded or if it is just on the armature shaft and the nut keeps it on the shaft. I do see an indentation on the armature shaft inside but its not a hole. I have tried putting a screwdriver in that little indentation but the armature shaft still turns. Please help me figure this out.

Thanks,

Chad Cunningham

In cases like this I just hold the fan, and hopefully there is enough friction to get the nut started. If the fan does not start to move before the nut does, your in luck.

I can get the nut off, that's not the problem. The problem is the fan won't come off after the nut is off.

Try gripping the part of the shaft you can access, and try pulling straight out while twisting the fan. I have also used a large bearing puller to remove stuck fans(only non threaded ones), but I do it very carefully so the fan does not get damaged. I also use oil to aid fan removal in the worst cases.

If the fan is threaded, it could be left hand threaded and that may have thrown you off. I know I have spent a fair bit of time before I figure out left hand thread shafts.
