I've had this since the 1980's - I think it was from a British Home magazine of some kind. Recognize the vendor, you folks across the pond? Maybe we should have a contest at the 2009 convention along these lines...

Si...

..they're 638's. Here's my rather sorry-looking example; still, it only cost me £4 ;)

Well hey Jack, there's your/our answer for dowdy beaten down vacs...get out the glue gun, fine fabric samples & the rick-rack trimmings. :-).

Next beater upright that comes along I'll just have to run up a nice Party Dress and matching (hand)Bag. I particularly like the 'just rightness' of cotton fringe to protect the bumper...

Silly Dave

638 Converter

Hi all. My first post - Great forum!
I have a 638 with boxed toolkit. The converter is the same as the 612 (straight) but blue. I dont know why the UK version was the same as the 612 converter.

638 Toolkit pics!

Here are a few photos of my 638 cleaning tools. I found them in the basement of a vac shop in Hampton Wick in early 1993. Later on I got hold of the cloth version of the hose which came in the early toolkits - cant remember where from.

jon this is fab!

absolutely great! ive had a 612 converter, hose , pipe and brush for years and never had chance to try them out until last month when i found a gorgeuos 1952 612 on ebay. i am so impressed with the cleaner , and how powerful suction is through the hose in comparison with the later 652 series rear conversion system. i modified the converter to take my 652 hose and love using it! i bet 638 is a more powerful machine is it?

I will dig up my 638 ad I have. It shows the vacuum and the toolkit - identical to these, with a woman stretching the flex hose up the stairs. Great pics!

Welcome Jon,

Hi Jon,

A belated welcome from myself. Glad to see another UK collector here in Vacuumland.

It would be great if you could upload pics of your collection to share with us all.

Si,

The 612 and 638 are essentially the same machine. A new streamlined hood was fitted to make the machine look shallower and sleeker, and the shake out bag was replaced with the new Disposall bags. I beleive that this was the first UK upright to feature these paper bags. The next machine to introduce them was the 1334 junior of 1958.

All,

I have recently received my near mint U7008. One extremely happy collector now am I. The 912/U7008's are my all time favourite Hoover machines. I would love to actually see some good pictures of an original model 90. The design lasted for nearly 50 years, 90 introduced in 1940, and the last U7008's being sold in Europe in the late eighties, possibley very very early nineties.

I know I harp on about this model so often, but all pics of this machine would be greatfully received!

Happy hoovering all, and I hope this years convention is the greatest ever. I cannot be there as I have not the money nor the time to make it across the pond, although I would love to. I have my wife and daughter to think of, especially as we now have a new addition to our family due on 17th January.

Happy hoovering guys and gals,

Catch up again soon.

Clark.

Hey Clark -

What a great site you have. I learned a lot. I am RIGHT NOW going to go dig out that 638 ad and post it here (I may also start a new thread, as well). I hope you can post pics of your new 912/U7008 soon.

Here's the 638 ad

This ad is from the Picture Post March 18, 1957. I had to fiddle around to even get this much on the scanner bed. A little is cut off, but the essentials are there. Looks like the one with the newer hose and the Disposall bag. Lovely.
