A new arrival - Hoover's 'The One', Model H1.M. I thought it was appropriate; It's called 'The One', and last Thursday, I was on BBC's 'The One Show'! Besides, having retailed for around £199.99+, an eBay seller has basically 'as-new' ex-display machines for a fraction of that price, so I couldn't resist...

These were awful, awful cleaners. One of the worst Hoover has ever made. They were plagued by so many faults that Hoover eventually stopped repairing them and offered refunds, so the machines they'd sold would just die and stop haunting them! Look on any online product review site or Amazon.co.uk and you'll find buyer after buyer spitting vitriol about their bad experiences with the cleaners, and with the Customer Service Dept. and Service Agents who didn't want to repair them.

The poor cyclonic system relied on the filters to hold back the dirt, and they just couldn't cope. They clogged constantly, causing the motor to overheat and cut out. The pre-motor filter let loads of fine dust pass through the motor, too.

The post-motor filter would be vigorously ejected by the spring-loaded system at the least provocation, leaving users to tape them in place, or just go without.

The floor-head, which is so plasticky it's one step up from a microwave food tray, would crack under stress from the bulk of the forward-leaning 'Anti-Tip' upper body.

The build-quality was generally quite poor, and the white body showed up every speck of dirt which leaked out from around the seals as the clogged filters caused pressure back-up.

They came out in 2006 as a much-hyped brand new model, Hoover's flagship. Tellingly, after a redesign of the original model, then a few variations - 'Pets', 'Performer', etc - it's been dropped totally just 2 years later, leaving the 10-year old Purepower/Dustmananger design to struggle on alone.

HOWEVER. All this makes me think it's worth getting one of these and keeping it basically unused for the future. Even after 2 years, the majority of 'The Ones' which have been in use in households up and down the country have bitten (or choked on!) the dust.

So for the benefit of those who haven't seen one, here is mine:

The floor-head:

With 'One Touch' carpet/hard-floor cleaning. Basically, for hard floors, it lowers a length of bristles behind the suction opening, like a cylinder vac's floor-head, to stop the brush-roll scattering the dirt.

With flimsy, soft-bristle-only brush-roll. They've gone back to the design they abandoned in 1926!!

The Hose:

This is released at the push of a button - the handle/wand jumps out of the main body. The hose unclips and actually stretches to over 4m long, enough to do up most flights of stairs.

hhmm

I remember seeing them on the Hoover UK web site when they first came out. Thanks for the great pictures! Not terribly ugly, but you did a great job describing the shape that the "used" ones are found in!

Btw, do you have a picture of the power switch? Where is it on the cleaner? Is it a push button?

Thanks :o)

power switch

the power button is the button behind the bin release under the white handle on front that has the one touch logo and says bin release under the logo.

Hey Jack,

Any bits snapped off yet? *ducks*

I'm glad a collector has hold of one of these now though, tat though it is. I hope you've made it clear to your household that this one and the U2336 are strictly off limits though!

problems with "the one"

*hoover_elite_20 looks at small caution label on bottom of machine* "WARNING! Vacuum may start to sound like chewbacca from star wars when used for more than 20 minutes" *he walks away upset and puts the vacuum away in the basement*

LOL

I guess they have more problems than even orecks.

Post# 44931 , Reply# 17   6/25/2008 at 15:29 (5,755 days old) by vintagehoover ()

hoover_elite_20 - yes, this is indeed the infamous Chewbacca Hoover. That's what happens to them after the motor's been allowed to overheat continually and the fine dust not caught by the filter has collected on the fan blades. As you say, this is one for the basement (or in my case, the attic!), not to be used.

Vacuumfreeeke - I quite like the way the One looks. Bulky, sure, but I like the white and red, and just the look of the machine in general. The power switch is the big rectangular button underneath the carrying handle. I'll post a photo below so you can see it a little more clearly.

Simon - lol, nothing's fallen off yet, but I've been handling it with great care! My household hasn't done any cleaning of any kind since I was about 5 years old, so my cleaners aren't at risk!

As for the video request, I did film clips for a video last night when I did the photos, but there's a problem. My new camera shoots video in .mov format, and my editing software only likes .mpg. Therefore, I can upload the raw clips to YouTube, but not a proper multi-angle video like I usually do. Here's my first little clip - I'll have to wait until my old camera decides to work again before I do a complete film.

thanks :o)

Thanks for taking the time to take a picture! Now I see where the switch is. I don't think I'd like reaching through the carrying handle to get to it, but if the machine is just for display, I guess it wouldn't matter!

Yes, that one specifically is a great color scheme! And the "hourglass" figure is sexy!

Post# 44959 , Reply# 19   6/25/2008 at 18:28 (5,755 days old) by vintagehoover ()
No problem! :)

The colour scheme's official name is 'white and mulberry'.

The switch isn't too bad, really - compared with the switches which Dyson are currently using, which drive me insane.

And the 'Hourglass Separation System', sexy or not, doesn't work! I wonder why they bothered patenting it. They won't use it again, and no one else will bother after everything Hoover went through!

I have a confession to make...I just bought another one...slightly different model... :P

Another ONE?

You crazy fool! Mind you, aren't the later ones meant to be much improved? By the then the damage had been done though, I guess...

Dying to see which one it is, and what you make of it!

By the way Jack, you can get various free bits of software that can convert a .mov file to something else, pain in the bum but it works!

Si

Si, I'll be sure to put up some pictures and a full review of the new machine - the Performer HPer16 - when it arrives. I was flicking through eBay yesterday morning and saw it had a couple of minutes lft to go. It's price was so low, I thought I'd put a bid in, and sure enough, I won it for £14.05, with £10 p&p! £24.05 for an as-new, boxed cleaner with manual doesn't sound bad, really!

Thanks for the tip about the .mov converter software; I had tried using Zamzar.com, which I use for downloading YouTube videos, but the resulting files didn't have sound. I've now found one called Allok MOV Converter, which seems to be doing the job - so stay tuned for a One video!

Hoover 'The One'

"One touch, all floor cleaning. One touch, full stair cleaning. The One, from Hoover."

I liked the advert, with the woman, the moving floors/walls, and the mood music.

Pity the machine wasn't up to much: 'Which?' said "Don't Buy" due to its abysmal performance on carpets, something like 36% in the score, against 84% for the Dyson upright on test (was it the DC14?). Though 'Which?' did say that it had a good hose for stair cleaning!

And then there were two -

And soon there will be 3! This is the Performer HPer16 I bought last week. Unfortunately, it arrived damaged, the wand release catch had been smashed right inside the white casing. Although I managed to pull it out for the sake of these photos, it's still broken and wobbles. It won't last long under use. I rang the seller and complained, and they're sending me another one, free of charge! I don't have to return this one either - that's what I call GOOD customer service!

First thing to note; the One-Touch hard floor button is gone, and the motor is 1600w, not 1800w - and therefore gives 250 airwatts, not 310. It's quieter than the One, and sounds nicer in use.

I can't believe they claim this cleaner is 'lightweight'!

And finally, the cyclone:

The dirt spins down the cyclone to the bottom, then out though a hole at the end, where it falls into the main drum. The 'clean' air goes up through the 'vortex tube' and through the filters.

Very Nice

Nice colours; pity about the reliability of the machines in general.

What type of drive belts do the two cleaners use? Did I see correctly on Hoover's website that the Mark II models use a toothed belt?

(Let that be a lesson to us all: never buy a 'first generation model' of anything; it's sure to be riddled with faults.)

I think 'The One' came out earlier than 2006. I've a sneaky feeling it was 2005.

The One down under !!!

I also like the look of The One, but have to agree they are so badly made. I have the HM.1 new in box in my storage centre and also have the

The One Performer H1PER and The One Infinity H1INF

Here's the Infinity, I love the colour

And The One Performer, sorry about the pic, I never took a proper picture before I put it in storage. Again love the colour.

I see you have a fusion

I HAD one. The piece of crap. Just recently died from to much dust through the motor because of the failed cyclonic system and it being non-hepa. Those things have almost as many issues as "The One".

Post# 45485 , Reply# 41   7/2/2008 at 13:00 (5,748 days old) by vintagehoover ()
And again...

the replacement arrived damaged in exactly the same way that the first one was...the handle release button was smashed into the main body. As before, I've extracted it and repositioned it, so it can be assembled and used as a carpet cleaner, but it's still essentially broken. It wouldn't stand up long if I used the hose regularly.

I phoned up to complain again, and they're sending me a third cleaner!! The stupid thing is, the cleaners they've sent already are 90% functional, but I'm not accepting damaged goods when I've paid for what should be a brand new machine.

Post# 45486 , Reply# 42   7/2/2008 at 13:09 (5,748 days old) by vintagehoover ()

Rolls-rapide - you might be right about the One coming out in 2005; 2006 was an estimate.

Some of the second generation One models, like the One Performer Mark posted the picture of above, have a toothed belt because they employ a separate motor for the brush-roll. The original 'One', and the later models such as the 'Performer HPer16' etc, have the ordinary Hoover flat belt.

Mark - thanks for posting those pictures; I agree the Infinity has a lovely colour scheme! I see you have an original 'One Performer' - what's that like? Does the 2-motor system work well?

Post# 45500 , Reply# 43   7/2/2008 at 16:25 (5,748 days old) by rolls_rapide (-)
Vintagehoover

Thanks for that. I'm sure it was 2005, because I seem to remember mentioning the cleaner to colleagues at work, and it was also about the time 'Dr Who' came back on television.

It seems that Hoover couldn't make up its mind concerning drive belt design.

Was there a separate switch to turn off the agitator, like Dyson's models?

You're not having much luck with the courier firm, are you? It must be the way the machines are packed: insufficient padding in the handle area.
