Last week I got a call from my friend Ron at Boulevard Vacuum here in Los Angeles. He had some very exciting news: Meile has come out with a brand new model, an upright! The machine is so new it has not yet been introduced to the general public, but 200 of them have been sent to key distributors around the country. Each of the selected dealers was given five of them for pre-sales. Ron has 10 of them because he owns two stores. These are the only ones that will be pre-sold until the full release of this new model.

One of the most interesting features of this new model is a "ball-joint" at the base -- you can swivel the base of the machine simply by twisting the handle.

Now here's the most exciting part: Meile is offering these first users the chance to review and critique them. They will receive two surveys from the Meile company to fill out and return, and for their efforts they will get a $50 ATM card each time. Furthermore, Ron is offering these first sales at nearly his cost. I don't want to discuss the price publicly but suggest those who are interested should contact Ron directly. His store number is 323-938-2661.

If you do call, please let him know I referred you. I don't have anything to gain financially from this; am not on his payroll or anything. I just want him to know I've helped him out by sending a few customers his way. He has done me many favors over the years I've known him.

Here are the first-look photos of this marvelous new machine!

Followup on the Meile Upright

I was just talking to Ron at Boulevard Vacuum again and he told me more about the Meile upright.

There has been a special, preliminary release of them purely as a test-market move. There are only 120 of them available anywhere in the U.S. 10 units were sent to 12 dealers. They are not being advertised; the only way to get one is by word-of-mouth referral. That's all there will be until (if) the machine is actually released.

Tentative release date will be January or February 2009. Actually, whether or not the machine is released will depend at least in part on the results of the survey that the purchasers (*) of these machines will submit to Meile.

If the results of the survey are negative, the machine may not be released at all, or not until later on after modifications are made. Either way you look at it, this is destined to become a collectible machine. I'd get one in a second, not even being particularly interested in modern machines, just for its colletcible interest, but that's just not in the budget at present (as usual, sigh).

Oh, one other thing, I mistook what he said the other day about the gift cards for participating in the survey -- there will be two $25 cards, for a total value of $50, not two $50 cards. But that is really just icing on the cake. The best part will be being the "first kid on the block" to have one!

-------
(*) Again, in the case of Boulevard Vacuum, Ron is offering them at his cost.

oh, and, yes, its 120 that are available and not 200 per my first posting. I was setting down the information from memory.

That looks really cool. I talked to my local Miele dealer about it a few weeks ago and they don't plan on stocking them. The guy told me that they don't sell uprights that expensive.

For that matter, they decide not to stock the high end canisters either. They stated that the higher end cleaner's fancier features are a service problem and make the cleaner less reliable and they perform no better than the base models.

Revision on Meile Upright Pre-Release

I misunderstood what Ron said about the cost -- I was going by a verbal discussion and may have inadvertently misrepresented some of the things he said about pricing and availability. There is a set price by Meile for the machines and they do have to be sold at that price. All the other elements of the situation are as I represented them, it is a pre-release and you will be the first ones to receive one. Again, any questions on this contact Ron directly.

oh, and p.s., my misspelling of MIELE was also corrected!

*duh*

Looing forward to reading the reviews and seeing how it performs...

Interesting that Miele have taken this stance of a pre-release,all their other products have been produced with an "Air of Greatness" -which people then flock to buy.....we`ve never had "Testing of the Water`s" before!!!

My New Miele Upright Arrived Today!

I'm thrilled and lucky to be part of a small pilot group (only 120 people) here in the U.S. who will be providing feedback to Miele on their new S7 series upright vacuum.

Charlie, thank you for referring me to Ron at Boulevard Vacuum - 323.938.2661. He was extremely helpful and very patient in answering all my questions.

I was on the phone with Terry Lattz during my maiden voyage. Terry, thank you for indulging me as I tried out my new toy for the first time.

Here are some snaps of the Miele. Enjoy.

First a few glam shots...

what does the underside look like?

and whats the advantage of the swivel action?

Brushroll Shot...

I'll get my camera out tomorrow and take one of the brushroll. It appears to be the same brushroll they used in the SEB 236 power head, which I love. (Or were you teasing me...LOL.. I thought I might be overdoing it by posting 13 photos...)

Post# 44235 , Reply# 25   6/18/2008 at 23:58 (5,780 days old) by buffster ()
Swivel Action

The swivel action makes it incredibly easy to maneuver around corners, furniture, etc., rather than only being able to vacuum in a straight line, back up and realign the vacuum in a new direction, as you have to do with most other uprights. It's amazing what a big difference the feature makes in ease of vacuuming.

Yes it really is a fabulous new machine isn't it -- "retro-futuristic" looking, a definite nod to 1930s uprights. I especially like the metallic-finish one. Would love to have one but it's not in the budget at present. Glad you're happy with it! :)

Hi Mike

Lovely machine, dont worry about too many pics, that`l never be the case here!!!

How is it for noise compared to your cylinder with power nozzle running??

Whats the weight like compared to the sebo??

would love to see the guts n gubbins of it, is it twin motors, also is it automatic height adjust?? i can see the vario speed etc

Enjoy, Mike

Post# 44246 , Reply# 29   6/19/2008 at 05:17 (5,780 days old) by buffster ()
Chestermikeuk

Hey Mike,

I need to do a noise comparison test, but it seems to produce about the same level of noise as my Capricorn. It's heavier than the SEBO upright (at least from what I recall when I tried the SEBO). It seems more comparable to the Riccar Radiance in weight and feel, i.e., it feels very solid.

I'll try and take more photos in the next few days of the brushroll and guts. To access the dust bag, you pull the silver lever on the front. I really like the fact that the front cover is hinged, i.e., you don't need to pull it off completely, it simply falls forward enough to replace the dust bag. It's very similar in feel to the canister lid. And, in many respects, this upright feels like a Miele canister. Ron explained that Miele's goal was to incorporate as many of the canister's features/pluses as possible. At first blush, it seems they've succeeded.

To access the HEPA filter, you lift the grill on the front. It's also hinged. The filter is easy to install and take out. And, it fits snugly in place. Just as you'd expect on a Miele.

And, yes it has twin motors. It has a Vortex suction motor and the brushroll motor can be turned off to vacuum bare floors. Fab. It also has automatic height adjustment (unless I've missed something. No, I haven't cracked the owner's manual yet.).

An anecdotal note: This vacuum is so new that Miele hasn't even branded its dust bag packaging yet. You can tell it's a Miele box, because it's the same style as the box in which Miele packages the F/J/M Intensive Clean Plus Dustbags, but it's white without the Miele branding. How cool is that?!?

Here's a parting shot with the Miele Antares I got from Andy W. Thanks again Andy. It's reminiscent of the Hoover collections where they used the same color palette. I love it.

Great first review, Mike. All the best Miele features in a gorgeous sculptured shape. Yes, we want more pictures, like with the bag compartment open. Man, I'll want one of these, too.

That swivel action is so much better realized than that Dyson Ball contraption. :-)

Just saw the Miele Rep...

Hey Mike/All

It was due over here this month but its now gonna be October.

Apparently its 100% German (mind you this is from a rep that wasnt aware(Allegedly!!!) the S380 was made in China.

Of the 5 models we are getting only the top 2 have the LED headlight(although from the brochure it looks like they all should have).

The bags are 6L and will be of the new HY- Clean material(25% better filtration/capacity than the Intensive Clean versions.

Mike, I felt so honored last night to be part of your unveiling of your new Miele!! I even got to hear it run when Mike turned it on for the first time. That is such a beautiful machine! I think one of the neatest things is the way the head pivots. Sometime check and tell us how long the hose is. It appears that it must be rather long from the picture of the woman cleanig the stairs. I am so happy for you that you were able to get this machine. You know we all want to see more pictures silly boy!!!! Terry

Oh my. what an amazing piece of equipment. I can't wait to get my hands on one of those. Anyone know a UK release date yet? Mike, are you generally pleased with the machine and would you use one as a daily driver? I am so getting one of those when they come out over here

Wow Mike, I am so glad to hear your remarks on this. I know Ron will be pleased as well. He's really a great guy and I was happy to do this little bit of "P.R." for him. Especially happy that it's turned out so well.

A reminder to those who now must have one, they are still available from Boulevard Vacuum -- 323-938-2661, ask for Ron. But they're not going to last because the quantity IS very limited, so ...

"DON'T DELAY! CALL TODAY!!"
