Bored this afternoon, I went into town for some window shopping. I'd say 'and some exercise', but I drove, so it doesn't really count!

I'd just about finished and was heading home, when I thought I'd stop by the market, just to see what was going on. The junk stall was there, as it always is on a Monday; usually, it is just total junk, but it's fun to browse through, just in case some elusive treasure lurks amongst it all.

And today, to my surprise, what should be standing in amongst the boxes full of old light fittings, board games and discarded gadgets but a red Hoover Turbopower. A bit late for my area of interest, but seeing as this stall rarely has vacuums, I looked closer. And to my surprise, it was a Turbopower Autoflex U2336! I had a feeling in the back of my mind they were supposed to be quite rare, but I wasn't
sure. Luckily at the trifling price they were asking for it, I could afford to give it the benefit of the doubt.

I had to carry it across town back to the carpark, braving the stares of the other shoppers - hoping they thought a) 'It's his mums, he's getting it fixed' or b) 'He's a penniless student who needs it for his dorm room', not c) 'What a nutcase! This is what New Labour is doing to young people nowadays...'

Anyway, I got it home and had the chance to look it over. Apart from a small section of the lower cord hook blank plate, which has snapped off, it's almost immaculate, and all-original. The cord rewind works. The 2-speed switch works. The headlamp works, and the Hoover air freshener is still in its compartment.

The motor runs quietly and smoothly, and all the cleaner needs is a new belt to make it run like new. There's barely a scuff on it - it looks like it's hardly been used. I guess the original owner used it until the belt went, then put it away somewhere and forgot about it. Good thing too, little else would have allowed this notoriously fragile machine to have survived all these years!

I gave Seamus a quick call to make sure I had done the right thing, going to the effort of picking it up and carting it home. He thinks I did ;)

What a great find, and a most appropriate one for Hoover's 100th Anniversary!

Oh, for the sake of those who aren't familiar with this machine, like the 65/652's warping hood, this was another Hoover plastic 'issue' - something about this particular colour made the casing very, very brittle and fragile. The vast majority of this model of Turbopower fell to pieces in use very quickly, and most that you see around now have all the major componants replaced in black plastic.

Turbopower Autoflex

And of course, it's by Royal Appointment!

The back...

Not a crack, scuff or scrape in sight! :)

Being the T.O.L model (I think!)...

...it has the bag-full indicator light. The button on the left is for the cord rewind:

Ratings sticker...

And I've forgotten how you date these modern machines by their serial numbers :S

Anyone?

Up and running..

...on low speed:

And high-speed...

...without the camera-flash for full effect :)

You may notice the base-plate is absent; I've removed it temporarily because it needs a new belt.

Aren't you lucky! That's a beautiful vacuum for Hoover's Hundredth Birthday! All I found today was a $2.13 Hoover Help-Mate full of Carpet Fresh! I bought it anyway, it was made in North Canton. I was hoping to find a Celebrity or the hand model based on the Quick Broom.

It is very rare to find a turbo of that vintage in such amazing condition.

I have 19/06/08 tattooed on the inside of my eyelids. I would not miss your article for owt!

The U4082 did not arrive today! :'( (Sobs uncontrollabley).

Oh well, still gives me something to look forward too.

Jack....

Like Rob, I too am green with envy!
Like Chris, I too am JEALOUS!!!
&
Like Clark, can i offer my congratulations on a superb find.

As Rob mention's yours is the fragile missing link from the 1986 2nd generation series.
The rather galling thing is my grandma possibly owned a U2336 - I have various conflicting memories. One day she owned the darker U2194 and the next it was the bright red U2336. Was definately one of them.

Very fragile I am lead to believe - put a way in a glass cabinet (preferably one made of stronger materials than the U2336 itself) and try to avoid all contact with light, dust, drafts, people......in fact anything at all!
Maybe then you can avoid it cracking up.

Truth be said though, it looks in superb condition for a machine so infamous for cracking up. A really great find.

Made my evening, knowing one is about.
Cheers for posting.
Paul
p.s the piccy below is another from the Turbopower cleaning weekend me and Rob had.

Are you planning on having one of every Hoover turbopower/master?

Would like to meet all of you !

Welcome to the dark side :-)

A Turbopower? How COULD you?

Only joking! Wow, that's an ace find, that really is a beautiful shade of red. Such a shame these are so rare. I saw the remains of one at Ritchie from Crawley's work, the plastique on that snapped like a chocolate bar, quite disconcerting!

What's your first impressions of it? I weren't expecting them to feel so substantial, the quality of their build is quite unlike most new vacuums. Definitely a nice old-fashioned feel to them. I feel bad at curling my upper lip at the wee beasties in the past...

So now you've got one you can't use much as its fragile, and I've got one I can't use much as it leaks dust... Race you for getting a usable one!

Si

Hi mate,

I didn't realise you lived so close. I knew you were around the Derby area, have done for a while, but getting married and moving from Sutton in Ashfield, to Bingham, has taken up a whole lot of my time, and my intentions to make myself known have fallen by the wayside! :D

I absolutely LURVE you collection of Kirby's. I think you collection must be among the finest not only in the UK, but the world!!!!

I might have something which you may be interested in. I have a collection of framed prints of kirby machines through the years. One has a broken glass, but the print is fine. Email me if you are iterested. :D They aren;t gonna go anywhere fast!

If you email, I will send you my contact number. Another collector so close is great to know.

I have been collecting for about 4 years now. I have always loved Hoover cleaners, and had had a number of them through the years, my first an 867 constellation given to me when I was about 5. This was thrown out in a parent imposed clearout as it was considered dangerous because it got warm? Oh if only they knew! :D The present collection was started with my 119. I remember my paternal grandmother having had one in her shop in Nottingham when I was small, (Late 70's early 80's). I loved that hoover, the colour, the way the bag inflated and the noise. So when I saw one almost mint and all original on Ebay I had to have it, and that was it. I had the bug again. Jack now has possesion of the second addition, Rosie the abandoned 652. Again all original, and chucked in a skip at the local tip. I had to rescue her, (along with a 1969 1346).
It has all stemmed to the 70 machines I have now, from there.

You can see some of my collection on THE CLASSIC HOOVER EMPORIUM which is my attempt at the post war chapter on Hoover UK's history. I have a world of work to do to bring this up to the same standard as Jacks VINTAGE HOOVER EMPORIUM though. LOL.

I look forward to hearing more from you mate.

Happy hoovering, (Kirby'ing if you like! LOL).

Clark.

Ohhh Jack Its a slippery slope, first its one..then..who knows how many, you`ll just have to go for the Blue & Green to match!! If I think of Hoover Turbopower I always "Think Red" the U2194 was so ahead of its time..so radically different.....and then later the Flame Red of the U2336 really does make your eyes Pop Out!!!!

Lovely Vac, keep it safe its a Very Very Delicate beasty...so much so as it ages...

Boys, a lovely collection of Turbopowers there, a classic collection as ever, will look even better with a few more added after the Turbopower stash find last week..me thinks theres room for a little "Mauve & Green" in that line up,

How do..

great U4362 Tommy. really a rather rare cleaner, so I am told.
from what i have gleened, the UK price of turbomasters increased by £10 the higher up the range you went (or thereabouts anyway). as such, people tended to go for the basic hardbag over the basic softbag - hence the rareness of the U4362.

Hi James - yep! the aim is to, if not acquire one of each, at least get a record of each of the turbopower and master models. I have a spreadsheet I am working on, a screengrab of which i have posted on the 'Turbopower Madness' thread.

Pop over there and see if you can fill in any of the missing info!!

'Challenge Turbopower' so to speak.

Cheers
Paul

I rather like it. It's what would have been called "Euro Design" over here. I see it has a fragrance dispenser.. does it utilize vacuum tablets or something else?

Well a lot of American uprights seem to be very industrial, chunky, heavy designs...regardless of how old they are.

They're domestic appliances, not an industrial process. :P

Hey Pete,

They used a circular solid scented block to dispense the fragrance, ISTR three different kinds were available.

They always remind me of lavatory freshner blocks a bit... *ducks*

Hoover Air Fresheners

Circular, soft plastic disc, with a hole on the centre. (These discs reminded me of the replacement discs for the 'Airwick Ball' airfreshener that Granny had in her bathroom, circa late 1970's!).

Initially Hoover had three fragrances:

1. Green disc: 'Orchard Blossom'; smelled of green apples.
2. Blue disc: 'Spring Bouquet'; quite a strong floral fragrance.
3. Brick-red disc: 'Tobacco Clear'; strong smelling chemical smell, to counteract smell of stale tobacco.

A fourth version was later added, replacing the 'Tobacco Clear'. This was a yellow disc, and called 'Summer Meadow'; smelling of summer flowers.
