Today on the second of four days off work Tom Anderson and I went out on the Hunt for Wayward Vacuums. I hit the road at dawn on Saturday, making my around Toledo toward farmland nestled in the crook where 71S meets 271E between Medina and Akron, to pick up an eBay win in person. There was a 35 minute wait in line to get across the Bluewater Bridge but having prepared myself for this the time passsed quickly. Then I hit 11 miles of I-90 reconstruction before Detroit. Then I got suddenly off-ramped & totally lost and confused in a nasty section of SE Detroit because half of I-75 south of Detroit is closed!!! argh. So rather than a leisurely two lane back road cruise to my first appointment I had to hightail it down the Ohio Turnpike 90, arriving at the first appointment at 3:30. Turned out to be another vacuum (and farm machinery, Chevrolet, kerosene two lung engines and so on based on a lovely isolated farm property in an idyllic valley so of course much jolly time was passed on all these subjects. The lovely couple Debbie & Carl Stauffer did not know about VCCC or the forum! They sure do now and I hope we will see them at the Convention. Having missed Tom at the Historical Center on his volunteer Saturday I checked into my sweet little North Canton motel room in the Big Box Mall Land shadow of Interstate 77, had a hearty Friendly's dinner, played some with the new vacuum(s) and went out to see Raiders Of The Lost Ark 4. Luved it...and Harrison Ford in a shower scene - worth the price of admission. :-) |

More on that turquoise drum thing later... Carl & Debbie & I had so much fun. Carl insisted I take along this Premier Duplex. Here's some shots in the motel room after I shook out the bag in the parking lot...and vacuumed it clean. All the parts are there, it simply need tender loving care to come back to the Land of Useful and Purty. |

Sunday morning after a hearty breakfast it was off to see Tom, Heather and Glenn. Tom & I headed straight for the basement where I peppered him with the usual questions he can so readily answer. Goodness, we read about and see pictures of Tom's Total Hoover display but to see them in person!!! Oh, you most fortunate Convention attendees... Noontime and off we go a-thrifting... Long story short, the trick is to look under tables and inside furniture drawers. And anything that resembles a hose at 100 paces is usually attached to something of interest. Get digging! |

Very alarming to hear about your sister, Pete. The trip came up so fast I had to move fast. You'll have to go to the Convention now. Tom is expecking you...and Dean would love the Stan Hywet Gardens & many other sites while you indulge in Vacuum Camraderie. I'm planning to cross back by the ferry on Monday morning and will naturally veer toward Sarnia. Don't have the cell phone with me so I'll call and if you're in, you're in. I'll keep you informed of itinerary timing with fast notes here rather than email. CLICK HERE TO GO TO aeoliandave's LINK |

So, without further ado...the thrifting finds. Yes, that is a second Roll-Easy!!! Tome hailed me to the back of a room to see an Airway 55 and something else. I spotted this in the darkl shadows under a table. I let out a whoop and swung it up into view. Be still my beating bursting heart!!! A Hoover Auto Drive and a GE Electric knife in box. I'll let Tom tell the Playskool lawnmower tale. :-) |

The Auto Drive back in the motel room. I like it! Needs a little tlc to tune up the transmission engagement lever and new belts. I think this was a Goodwill find. While there we engaged in conversation with Elfrieda/Elthena (? Tom?), who noticed these two fellers practically dismantling the vacuum on the floor at the back of the store. A retired lady of some 25 years service at the Hoover Company who has so many stories to tell as well as confirming factory insider things Tom has deduced over the years. |

Back home we headed down to the basement again, this time with the Vac-O-Meter I had brought along. We tested suction -the Roll-Easy pulls 59" - then Tom figured out how to use the electrical testing section of the meter. You plug the vacuum cord into the lower left receptacle and turn on the vacuum - tho it does not start up - which completes an internal circuit and the test lamp lights up. Flipping the toggle switch to TEST starts the vacuum and the amp meter gives a load reading as the motor runs. very cool. So we tested out a few vacuums... |

The Hoover Building perfectly sunlit as sunset approaches on my way back to the motel to play with vacuums and prepare for whatever Monday holds for roving Dr Davy. First thing after breakfast I'm heading to an open air flea market Tom has told me about on my way north to Akron to Stan Hywet and thence to Sandusky and Cedar Point Roller Coaster Park. |

Back in the motel room, the $17 Roll-Easy version 3 augmented with aluminum wand, late double action floor nozzle. Note that the Hoover Hose has at least the authentic aluminum Roll-Easy ends and not the chrome Swiveltop ends. Well, we are in Hoover Country, after all. :-) We think the gray cord is a GE replacement as I usually see Roll-Easys with blue/gray or turquoise cords. This gray one is in excellent supple condition. Beside other notable differences stemming from the GE Bean Counters, Version two/three is definitely narrower between the wheels than the convex barreled version one. I deduce that this was another material fabrication cost cutting measure allowable because the hose socket was re-positioned to the center. The bag clamp inside fitting to the left required more drum depth to accommodate the bag. The vacuum trails after you now instead of being canted and dragged as in the first version with the off center hose attachment. But it's still a heavy li'l sucker to be dragged up & down stairs and over thresholds; no wonder that original turquoise hoses are not to be found and no wonder the ends were simply swapped to any vaguely blueish colour matched available woven vinyl hose stock at the Repair Shops. So, being introduced in 1957, does anyone know how long into the 1960s Roll-Easys were in production? |

Today is Sunday. Traveling to Cedar Point for Monday. Monday night motel somewhere in Michigan or Toledo. So I can thrift my way north to the ferry Tuesday morning. Unless the weather goes all to hell and I beadle back Sarnia way Monday night... I'll check the weathercasts Monday morning before I leave. Now its midnight and I wanna be up early to hit the flea market. Maybe Sandusky won't require as much time as I imagine. :-) It is a summer Monday and I may find Cedar Point too much bother. Regardless, I intend to take the return trip wandering scenic two lane blacktops along the Erie shoreline to Toledo, at least. |

Yes Tom and Alan. the Roll-Easy was a thunderclap shock to the system. Whodathunkit? As my 3rd Roll-Easy I'll call it a spare...for now, til more parts come to ground in the future. It's seen a lot of use, is a little banged up and has interior rust beginning in the drum but, it does have the aluminum hose ends, which my version one does not - it came with chrome Swiveltop hose and are the ends I used with the turquoise Flo-Bee hose. Now all will be right as rain. No secret here - what I picked up on the Farm from Debbie in those boxes is a complete version 2 Roll-Easy w wands & toolset in showroom condition, plus about 40 bags, two superb(swiveltop} woven hoses, two electric cords (one blue/green and one unwrapped turq.}...and...two late GE turquoise double action floor tools, so I have one for the 3rd R-1. In addition one of the floor tools has a copper clad elbow for version 2 Roll-Easys when it replaced the flipover floortool! Can one believe the Twingle just knew there was an under equipped Roll-Easy to be unearthed in North Canton? Anyway, there is a huge storm cell moving across the midwest again and its due to hit the eastern shores of Michigan Monday early evening. Predictions are for serious thunder storms, high winds and a week of rain. No fun for driving when I could be safely home vacuumizing my last day off on Tuesday. So Pete, I am making my scenic thrifting/flea marketing way to the ferry by sunset today, will call when I find a handy pay phone and come on by if it's ok. Can be home well before midnight or heck, why not... thrift my way across Sarnia & area on Tuesday. :-) |

I know about the one your co-worker/friends got you but I have mentally misplaced number two. I am in such a state for the last year you would have to plug me into a light socket to get a remote twingle out of me. But seeing a Roll-Easy in any of my haunts would see me move quickly for sure. And with tools? Dave's fab luck again!

Just started raining but I did manage to get the traditional obligatory driveway Beauty Shot. But not the U.S.A stuff - that was hustled inside the house as the first drops began to spatter down. Later... Here we see what got tossed in the car on the Canadian side only, and came out of the car first. I did find the places, Pete. Left the Eureka behind. However... Found a nice miniature Vornado Fan at Value Village for 3.99. Always wanted one but could never find a nice one. This one is perfect. Speed control dial on the back of the motor pod, no bent grill bars. I think it didn't sell because folks would plug it in and it didn't turn. That was only because the original plug had an internal wire separation. I pressed the cord into the plug head and of course, it ran. So I took it to the counter, showed them how it would not run and got it for a dollar.. Just put a replacement plug on it and its on the floor beside be silently whipping up a blasting breeze. Whee! I guess we can all identify the rest of the stuff... A GE floor polisher with the cord cut off from curbside trash in Pete's neighborhood. He told me about seeing it when I arrived yesterday so we drove around and I tossed it in. Thing is, I have this polisher but not with such a nice handle. The usual ubiquitous Kenmore canister with taped up power hose I drove past on the St Clair River road from the ferry landing to Pete's house. Pete gave me the Dial-a-matic and the Hoover Windtunnel. Missing its bagless dust jug it was destined for the trash. I took it to salvage the cord and tools and bitz. Nice hose material, too. Then I will trash it. But wait...it has double counter-rotating brushes. ??? wtf? I'm sitting here thinking I will get the double brush head running then graft it on to a more worthy bagged Hoover upright. Just for good cheap fun LOL So, the Raindow D3 is quite nice with both wand sets, two hoses, one with the power cord for the power nozzle. Only the floor brush and the sprayer with it, tho. Both hoses have taped repairs at one end but that's easy to slice off and rescrew into the affected end. It was different enough from my d$ that I couldn't just leave it there in Petrolia. Pete, I spent two hours taking the full tour of the Petrolia heritage site. You follow that road by the bridge back through the park and emerge in a large working oil firld. Theyhvae moved several ancient buildings back there and have a full working 1870s Oil pumping setup, with the shaker lines running from the power house out to 8 pumps around the property, that has huge great flywheels and belts as well as a working carpentry shop running off overhead pulleys and belts. very impressive place and only $5 gets you the full walking tour. Well, I was the only person there besides the very well informed lad, home from University, that conducts the tour. The buildings have been set out like a small village, with a church and a schoolhouse, all moved there 10 years ago. I'lll have to make a new thread all about my visit there. Highly recomended tourist stop. better than the displays at Oil City in north western Pennsylvania. And its a documented fact that Canada can rightfully claim the first successful well as well as the first gusher to be tapped in North America - by a six month lead. :-) Up front, a selection of vacuum tools including the weirdly shaped SEARS white crevice tool, a turquoise Compact crevice tool to match the upholstery nozzle from Pete, and in front of that, a dark green/black two piece Bakelite Demother of unknown brand...the larger end has a small keyway like for a Compact. But the bore and opposite tapered end are too small for the standard wands like Compact, Airway or Electrolux. Rainbow guy threw in the Westinghouse hand vac, as it has no cord nor belt access cap. I have this same model with w rotted bag and bristless brush so I am pleased to have this parts donor vacuum. So, that's the end-of-trek Canadian side haul. |

I gave the wrong name for Debbie's husband. It's Debbie and Eric Staufer, with one F. :-) Here's Debbie with her favorite quicker picker upper. On Monday, after going to the Hartsville Giant Flea Market Tom sent me to (Tom, did you get the package I placed in your mailbox?) and doing a fast tour of the Stan Hywet Gardens in full bloom...and wanting to get to Sandusky & outrun the coming storm system, I realized I was almost back at Debbie's as I diagonaled toward Sandusky. So I stopped there briefly to tell them my lucky tale of finding another Roll-Easy...and get Eric's correct name. They are totally taken with the VCCC website and forum and indicated they were planning to come by the Convention. (and so, as embarrassing and off-putting as the extended behaviour exhibited about the Photoshop joke is, I am glad it has perpetuated itself in a separate thread than this happy one, which introduced two potential new members to what I was trumpeting as a great group of enthusiastically positive Hobby people. I do hope the Staufers will not be dissuaded.) |

Thanks for the heads-up, Alan. Unoriginal partz include the tools, chrome wands and hose from a Swiveltop. Naturally I am watching it with great interest. 5 days to go and its already hit $200 in 21 bids. This one will be the record setter, I expect. Makes mine look like a genuine bargain, as mine has at least the correct wands & tools, doubles of some accessories, about a decade's worth of bags and didn't hit $200 until 46 bids just over one day to auction end. Canister is in great condition, tho, as this pic from the auction notice shows. which is basically what I got for another $14 ovber the weekend. LOL |

Gosh Matt, sorry. I really want to keep this one as it represents the next Power Drive iteration after the Concept, in a sleek enclosed bag case with on board tools and hose. Tom said that he would get it if I didn't so that clued me in to what a keeper it is. Nice rounded square design before they went all 'bar-of-soap/astronaut helmet organic' & cheaper made. This one was very well used - has way worn down brushroll, will need new belts but mainly it needs a new cable - this one is metal fatigue snapped off at the lever mount on the motor. Did a quick&dirty join last night and got it shifting but that cable is now only hanging by a few strands. |

Notice that the double action floor unit is much more pale green than turquoise. Like the the hose and wands, from a Swiveltop or Reach Easy, I think. The crevice, dusting and upholstery tools have absorbed a lot of atmosphere aging and are in fact for the wider Version 1 concave Roll-Easy, not this later convex version. They should be ribbed with lettering along the sides. Especially noticeable in the shapes of the crevice tools. But, aRoll-Easy is a Roll-Easy is a Roll-Easy...and I still think a rare bird and as such, any Roll-Easy is a find. :-) I have both manuals. |

Note that the first version tools have an internal groove for the latch and 4 half round cutouts for the latch button, to lock the tool in 90 degree increments. The later tools have 4 cutout latch rectangles to the same purpose and the button does not contact the tool. Another example of GE cost cutting, the later tools have thinner walls & have less material in them and I suppose as they were developed they were simply packaged with your new Roll-Easy |
