Anyone know anything about this? I had no idea Lewyt vacuums were still being made--

Would like to know more? However the machine shown sure doesn't look anything like the Lewyts we used to know--Looks like another plastic "roast turkey" canister vac.Now why don't they bring back the METAL Big wheel? If they would do that-would surely be interested.

Intersting! I though I saw something about a Lewyt that was new but that was a few years ago.

The one thing that seems most interesting is the Lewyt logo. I think it looks just like the lettering used in the Shetland Lewyt era when they looked like Eurekas and had lamb motors. I'd have to go down to my basement to check but I don't feel like it this late at night (2:00) but perhaps someone else knows.

Ok, I found where I saw them before. It was on Doug Smith's web site. I'm gonna give you guys the link. Lots of other interesting stuff there on the Lewyt page too.

I have always liked the metal Shetland Lewyt canister models since my mother had a used one when I was younger. It was like one of the low end models at the top of the page I have linked to. If I remember correctly it had a very strange plastic suction fan and a small enclosed motor. Never seen anything like it since. My current one has the Lamb motor and the one my mother had was thrown out a long time ago. I'd love to see the insides of one of those again. When your as young as I was you don't quite remember all of the mechanical details just right.

There is some company that buys old names, and brings products back, not like they were unfortunately, but I like the idea. Crosley, DuMont, old Revlon fragrances, food products, etc. If anyone knows what I mean, maybe they could stick a link in an off topic post.

brand new Lewyt

I think I saw a new Lewyt at Mike Hays on a visit several years ago. It seems like he said it was made in Canada and it was an upright. Much like Hoover now it was a Lewyt in name only.

Just another example of licencing out an old defunct name to plaster on a new made in China product. These have no ties whatsoever to the original companies that made them because they're no longer in business or out of the consumer appliance business.

Mike's Lewyt is a canister

And there is nothing impressive about it. It is sold out of Canada, but feels like it is made in the PRC.

If you know Mike Hays, he falls in love with each new vacuum he gets and swears it is the best he has ever owned. He didn't have anything good to say about his new Lewyt! As a matter of fact, he can't stand using it - something about the LED lights on the powerhead point up instead of down at the floor and they blind him while vacuuming.

That was about 5 years ago. So they are still being sold?

John

I Think...

....You're talking about River West Brands, a brand-revival company that's currently in the process of bringing back Brim coffee and Salon Selectives hair-care products. There was a New York Times story on River West a week or two ago; a linkie is below. I don't think that DuMont or Lewyt are River West brands, though- there might be someone else behind those. And Crosley hasn't really ever been gone- they've gotten smaller, and they've retreated out of major markets to small-town "Mom and Pop" appliance stores. But they're still around.

River West is supposed to be bringing back my favourite toothpaste memory- Ipana. Brusha! Brusha! Brusha!

How Are They Handling....

....The problem with peoples' pronunciation of "Lewyt" these days? Back in the day, the ads read, "Do It With Lewyt", which gave people a clue to pronunciation, and which was fine in that more innocent age. But I'm not sure that telling people to "Do It With Lewyt" is quiiiiiiite the thing to do nowadays. I know quite a few people who'd have to be scraped up off the floor, helpless with laughter, if you said that to them.

*giggle*
