In real big letters: "$10"

in real tiny letters: "and up"

That kind of bulls#!t really ticks me off. The guy probably had one (if any) sweeper at $10, then the rest were a lot more.

A couple weeks ago a graphics shop across the street from one of my clients had a big "art sale" -- the large sign across the store in big bold letter "ART PRINTS $19.99" and, you got it, in teeny tiny letters, "and up." I went over to have a look, and gave them a piece of my mind after asking which ones were $19.99 and they could not show me a single one. Most of the stuff they were selling (which was real crap) were $39.99 "and up."

Those machines look pretty gruff--at least get a leaf blower if you're going to have a sale! Still, I would be a liar if I said I wouldn't be like a little kid in a candy shop there.

What I'm really eager to see is the machines at the back of the pile. There could be treasure back there..... Where are the canisters? Not a single one in the pile!

What a Pile of Junk

The store owner probably bought (buys) the trade in vacs from the Kirby salesmen. These are machines he DOESN'T want to rebuild and sell, since no one (except some club members) wants them. When new Bissell PowerForce, 12 amps with on-board tools, are $39 at Wal-Mart, why would anyone want to buy a Sharp with a broken headlight lens, full of dirt, with a missing front door?

Or a Fantom Fury without the dirt container for $10? Or a Windtunnel without a front door for $10. The only good machine in the entire pile is the Dial and The Eureka with cord winder.

I have lots of friends in the vac business who regularly send these types of machines to the crusher. At our St. Louis Mini Meet, I'll take the group to some vac shops who will GIVE these types of cleaners away.

not totally

I would not say its all junk, there may indeed be some diamonds in the rough in that mess, all thats needed is a good EYE to discren whats worth saving, and what should be landfill.

Given all the leaves and stuff around those cleaners, it kinda looks like they have been outside for a while!

And the Sharp's fron door is not missing, its laying right next to that Hoover Convertible.

i see several Hoover Concept models. the vac dealer may not be able to make a good profit by reselling these, but that doesnt mean they arent fixable and a hell of a cleaner.

I would have to say some of those vacs look like refugees rescued from the dumpster. Can't spot any Royals or Kirbys,Dysons in that lineup.

I actually did spot a Kirby in the pile. It's in the photo at the top of the page, behind the orange Hoover Convertible (on the far right). All you can see is the handle and the red tip. Looks like a 500 series. Somehow, I don't think they'll be asking $10 for that one....

There are...

A LOT of Fantoms in that pile it looks like. Counted at least 5 or 6 because you can also see some handles poking up too not all of them are visible. There were a lot of original Fantoms/Thunders and 2 Furys. One Fury looked to have everything except for the attachments. The other one was missing a bin which you will never get ahold of one usually, unless you take it from another Fury. Btw is this store or sale even still here?

The owner of this amazing time capsule Vacuum Store, Allan County Sweeper Co was Dale Skaggs, who recently passed on. I visited there once with Robert Knox and was staggered by the vintage uprights and canisters handing from the ceiling, crowding the floorspace and shelves in the front showroom...and then there was the back room 'warehouse' piles to the ceiling behind the garage bay doors. Took many pictures. The shop, a 1930s Garage/Car Dealership, sat at the edge of the General Electric Factories, now abandoned. Must have been some glory days when the factories were at full tilt.

Anyway, this thread gives all the current information we have at this point...
