Hello - Wondering if anyone can help me. I bought a used Eureka upright that works great. Only problem is, when you release the handle, it just drops to the floor. It also has play when you wiggle the handle from side to side.

I assume there should be some sort of spring that holds the handle in place once it is released but I took the hood off and don't see anything. It looks like there is a large rivet which is supposed to hold the handle into the base of the machine. The rivet has loosened off so I assume that is where the play comes from but not sure what the dropping to the floor problem is related to.

Thanks much in advance for any advice or suggestions.

I think there was some type of spring to have some resistance on that happening. or maybe the spring to the handle release is worn. I think I might have had this prob once

I can help

I have like seven there is a spring that attaches the handle release. If the handle is plastic they are just wobbily and will not change. The spring clips to the lever and to the bottom of the machine where the fan shroud would be.

Hi - thanks for the advice. I will pull the hood off again and see if that is the issue. The handle release seems OK as when you push it down, the release lever springs back up once you take your foot off. It's just that there is no resistance in the handle itself so it just drops right to the floor if you let go of it once released. It does still lock into place if it is in the full upright position however.

The handle is metal.

I will see if I can take a picture once the hood is off and post it......
