So the vacuums kept on rolling in! Almost every month this year! Anyways I got another Hoover Dial a Matic, a Power Drive U6003 made around ‘75 or ‘76, and this marks my 3rd Dial a Matic and of course my 2nd DAM power drive model too. When I was approaching to the household section I was figuring out there was some boring vacs from today but somehow I happen to saw this vintage treasure! It works good but it needs a new brushroll belt and and power drive belt since it didn’t have one! But I ordered one right away. It has good suction too but the weird thing is that the check bag tab doesn’t get sucked in like normal so dunno why. And one little problem is that the handle wiggles a little bit but not too serious but hopefully some DAM fans know how to fix it, I even tried tightening up as good as I can. Anyways it’s in good condition but slightly rough so I’m sure it needs major TLC and a spa treatment but I guess that means the whole vacuum needs to be taken apart and these DAMs are built like a tank.

I’m cleaning the underside and I noticed one latch that holds the brushroll is rusty and one side of the brushroll is rusty too. How do I replace the latch and what product do I use to get rid of rust?

Completely disassemble the brushroll and with only the metal core in your hands, wire brush it down to bare metal. Then paint it with small bursts and quick strokes of black Rustolium. Too much or a steady stream will leave drips.

Forgot to post this interesting feature, this plug is not original, this is a GE brand plug replacement.

Just make sure you wear long clothing and eye protection. All wire brushes will fling a piece of wire at you every once in a while. If you want to save yourself some money, you can also go to your local Harbor Freight Tools and they sell them there. |

Thank you Repairman, I already brought the wire brush set at Walmart and also got black rustolium at Home Depot along the eye goggles. But this kind should work and help right?

Well I haven’t got to the brushroll project yet but the belts have arrived today so I wanted to try out the vacuum. After placing the new belts I plugged it in and turned it on and it sounded good till it made like a weird sound to the motor. I checked to see what’s wrong till I found out a bolt is sticking out from the pulley. That’s not normal. Anyone had this kind of problem?
