Im betting its for 1956 and 57 Constellation demos, If it were for 1955 it would have blue trim on the latch instead of white. |

Interesting piece of history.
I believe all companies had some form or way when demonstrating to show how much dirt they were picking up. But that certainly is an interesting attachment/tool. I am assuming there would be a black cloth that would be placed inside to show the homeowner just how bad of a job their old cleaner was. |

Does tan vinyl strip on the latch indicate that this went with the tan Constellation model? |

According to all Hoover data, door to door sales were diminishing in the 50s, from the Hoover standpoint. This tool in question would have been used to show the strong airflow in the Constellation, possibly even the "Holiday". These would have been used in the brick and mortar stores, as well. The clue is: IF that vinyl latch cover is sandalwood, it would be circa 1956, 57. IF it's white, it's later, "post '57". When this is cleaned up, the color will reveal the age.
Yes, a filter cloth would be placed in between the 2 sections, and would be clamped. This would demonstrate the superior airflow of the Hoover. This would have been assigned to the Hoover dealer. So, there you have it, Kids. |

As I said, that was a demo tool for Door to Door sales, which were still occurring in the 1950's. It would not have been used at vac shops nor in department stores. What kind of salesman would want to show the customer the dirt in the store carpets? That tool was for generating emotion in the HOME just as the Kirby Demo Tool wouldn't be used in a vac shop. It generates the desire to own the Hoover by showing your OWN dirt.

This one looks like a Kirby dirtmeter with a convertible bellows and bag ring on it. |
