I'm curious as to what the prices would have been for vacs sold DTD in the 70s i.e.Rainbow D, Electrolux, Filter Queen, Kirby. I remember my mom had a demo of a Lux '89 in the early 70s and I think it was $275 CAD.

I remember

The Electrolux Super J was 379.00, I know because my Mother bought a Hoover Celebrity 2 Powermatic for 208.00 , my pleading to buy the Electrolux did no good as She thought no one in their right mind would pay that much for a vacuum!! I HATED that Hoover!I think it was about 1978, looking back I wish she had bought the Eureka power team instead or a Kenmore.

Electrolux 1205 IN 1970-73

When I was selling for Electrolux 1970 to 1973 the Model 1205 sold for $150.00 as a straight suction vac. To add the Power Nozzle and electric hose added another $50 or so. So the whole package was about $210.

The Model L was $99.00 and with the power nozzle was a little over $150.
At least that's what I remember.

I wish I could BUY

A NEW 1205 for that now!!!!I wouldn't trade it for all the new machines on the market!

door to door prices

I'm guessing that vacuums sold door to door have always been more expensive than machines bought from a store. It will be interesting to see if machines that are still sold this way such as from Aerus, Kirby and Rainbow survive, especially when there are machines that work just as well and are cheaper. For example, the Quantum and Sirena are much cheaper than a Rainbow and will clean just as well, if not better.

Not always

The GE avc 815 swivel top was 99,95 in 1952, but in 1957 the Apex Strato cleaner was150.00....when the AE Electrolux was 89.95!

I can attest to the price of Lux 1205 in 1969 in Tacoma Washington. My Mother paid $213.00 for the 1205 with the PN, with the strap on hose cord, though the machine already was set-up for the newer style hose....I never really liked it.

My Grandma bought a white Electrolux L in the early 60's I still have the bill of sale. The whole package including power nozzle cost her roughly $150

I found this out last night and it makes me sick. I work part time in a nursing home on the side in addition to a full time job. Anyhow I have a resident who is in her 90's and has been with us a year. Her daughter told me last night that right before her Mom moved to the nursing home she had a Kirby dealer come to her door and sold her a Kirby with everything for over $3,000. The lady probably used it one time before going to the facility. That is just robbery

The door to door Kirby man got my mother suckered out of $2 grand for a Kirby Ultimate G in 2002, it was the entire kit w/ shampooer. I do think the original receipt is with it but I can't access it right now. I still have the box too.

Its amazing the number of Kirbys

I find at the Goodwill outlet, I almost bought a Sentria last week, but it had the hose on it and I couldn't find the rug nozzle...All vacuums there are 5.00...For a 2000 dollar machine!

I'll have to go on a road trip and buy them out! Never ever ever ever ever ever seen a Kirby at any of the 3 thrift stores here in the 15 years I have been going.

I have a condition of Sales from November 4th, 1948 for an Electrolux Z 30 Cash Price $99.50 which was made out to Mrs. Goldie Andrew. I also have the vacuum accessories and manual. I was a little surprised that the receipt was in the wife's name given it was the 1940's

Also within my collection I have a Compact Electra Cleaning System sold door to door in 1966 for $220.40 along with the original copy of the Compact Owner - Recommendation Program. You received a $25.00 credit applied to the cost of your Compact Electra Cleaning System until fully reimbursed within 6 months of the purchase. I also have the manual, the 25 year factory warrantee card and machine and all attachments

Electro-Hygiene

hygiene903's profile picture
When I started selling Electro-Hygiene in January 1974, the 903 upright was $269.95 including attachments and the 966 tank was $259.95. Later on that year the prices went up to $289.95 for the upright and $279.95 for the tank. There was also an Extra Accessories Kit available for the upright that included a polisher brush, sprayer, and small bag, cord, and short handle to convert it to a hand vac for $29.95, and a polisher for the tank, but I don't remember the price. Cord winders and power nozzles became available for the tank later that year.

Jeff,
How much did the cord winder and power nozzle change the price?
Did you sell many power nozzles?

a 1976 kirby classic III with all attachments (handi bulter, handi waxer, shag king and rug reno) was $600 if i remember right the base price was 350 or so for the machine and basic attachments,

That sounds about right Will. I used to "know" a Kirby salesman back then who used to come into the restaurant where I worked. First I bought a Classic for my mom, just the basic attachments and I think I paid $185.00. Then when the Classic III came out, I sold her Classic for what I paid for it and bought her the Classic III and I want to say I paid $225.00 with the basic attachments. I guess he did give me a good deal...he should have, lol.

Hi Phillip,

hygiene903's profile picture
If I remember right, the cord winder and power nozzle didn't affect the price of the 966, as they were always sold as optional equipment. I didn't sell any power nozzles myself, as I had already left Electro-Hygiene when they came out with them. And when I went back to Electro-Hygiene a couple years later, they had me selling the Galaxy Prestige 990 almost exclusively.
