...an all metal Royal soft bag upright? New or old? Here's a new one for comparison:

Yes, I know. I've posted my 1965 Royal 880 before, but here it is. I just love it to bits!

how do you attach a hose to one of these

My mother has a 1982 ish Electro Hygiene.

She bought it new at a vacuum store at the Manassas Mall (the original receipt is around here somewhere). It is the model with the white bag and red trim. It looks really sharp, has been the daily driver vac since new, and does a great job. I think the Kirbys may be a little better, but they are also more expensive and heavier.

The hose installation is a royal (no pun intended) pain in the rear. You have to remove the round cover on the front and pull off the belt. You can then shove in a metal hose coupler which clips in place and creates a straight tube from the front of the vacuum to the fan. The hose attaches to the coupler and you can then vacuum with the hose. I like Kirby's belt lifter much better. In comparison, the Royal system seems clunky and unrefined. The worst part is reconnecting the belt. They give you a small plastic tube which you slip through the belt, hooking one end of the tool over the shaft, and then you turn the tool and the belt comes off onto the shaft. I find reattaching the belt to be difficult because it is hard to stretch the belt, especially when new, and it requires a level of dexterity and patience missing from most people.

For all its faults, I would not change the Royal. It has Kirby quality and can perform admirably. For a lower price than Kirby, you get a much simpler and lighter weight vacuum that run for years and years. Don't even think of comparing a Royal to the new Wal-Mary junk, it's like trying to compare apples to rotten oranges. For all tasks needing a hose, I usually use my Electrolux Super J anyway.

Great vacs. More cleaning with less electric usage than anything else I know,
Dave

You can see the contrast between the two cords very well:

I will try to find pictures of my Royals with attatchments. They actually have very good suction and tools. You can still order new sets ot tools from any Royal Dealer.

Mike Rogers, club member, works for the Henry Co and can order the tools for you. Also, they do appear on E-Bay every so often. The last set I purchased were for sale with a Kirby. I emailed the seller, he corrected his ad and sold me the tools.

Sometimes the vacuum gods to shine!!!

I have one

Up north in my storage I was never really impressed with its suction. This was the first vacuum I saved my money up to buy.It was 65 dollars when I was 14 years old.

My Royal 880 is a slow machine, like all of them. It is like the hoover 913, slow and smooth.

Yours...

...looks like a commercial model. It's got some pretty interesting colors there. I LOVE IT! What year and model number is it?

I Just Remembered...

My grandfather has the same royal model that I posted at the very top. I remember comparing it to mine(which is its grand father LOL). They have A LOT in common.
